My rating is more like 3.5. The seafood was very tasty. I think the sauce could have been served hotter, but was also tasty. The one thing that I didn't like was the tip situation. They add the tip to the bill, which I often don't mind because it's less than what I usually give. But what I thought was not cool... after the card is swiped, and given the receipt to sign, it shows "total" then "tip" is left blank (but you already tipped). So if you're not paying attention you will tip again. So just review the bill before paying. read more

Originally I enjoyed coming here especially for their lunch specials, and occasionally for dinner. The service and quality of food has been poor the past few times we've came. This time, will probably be the last time we'll be coming here. We all got the same lunch special, which comes with a soup and our entree was chicken asado with white rice that comes with a small salad portion, the special also comes with a drink (soda or water) Service of course wasn't so great since it's busy but they manage, my complaint was the raw chicken they kept insisting was cooked, meanwhile it wasn't ( as you can see in my photo) if that's how they prefer to eat their chicken that's great but I refuse to pay for something I don't think it's fully cooked nor will I eat it.. then the waitress simply replied that the reason why it isn't so good it's because it's "their special " explaining that if you order from their regular menu then their food will be much better and prepared with more care! wow, if their own employees are telling the customers that their reason of why the food isn't up to quality it's because it's their lunch special and it's cheaper, therefore not great but just okay. Ridiculous, if you decide to come here, make sure you check your food, especially if you're picking it up to go. read more

This review is long over-due. I've been a loyal customer since I first moved to NJ and it has been over three years now. I have only ordered their mixed seafood civiche and their baked ring cookies. After having many civiche dishes from other restaurants, Fruit Punch Cafe is in first place. Ingredients in my favorite civiche: fresh fish, octopus, squids, shrimps, red onion, corn (with huge kernels), I piece of 2x2 sweet potatoe, I piece of 2x2 yuca, and maybe lemon or lime juice makes this perfect civiche mix. I always order with a mild degree of spice, but it always ends up spicy... Just the way I like it. I've ordered no spice before, but that just means there is less juice...not the same bc I have my civiche with rice n that calls for some sauce. I been coming here for years with my family and friends all the way from Queens,New York. It's a Family Oriented restaurant, with great choices of food at a very reasonable prices, Its Peruvian Cuisine at it's best. I order the Shrimp Soup, a mixture of Vegetables,eggs,rice, dice potsto and Shrimp with a special blend of sauce. In the enormous amount of restaurants on Bergenline Ave. in West New York, I still am hoping to find a decent place with good food. Unfortunately I was disappointed again. This seems to be a Peruvian restaurant with many flashing lights adorning the windows. Several tables, which were all empty. That should have been my clue, but no, I sat down to eat. I ordered Peruvian style baked chicken with rice and salad which includes a bowl of soup. The chicken soup was flavorless. Rice and bones and some carrots with no seasoning. The baked chicken and white rice with salad was dreadful. Rubber chicken leg that you can't cut with a knife. Hard old rice and a small salad. I couldn't put it down. Left the soup and half of the rice with the unedible rubber chicken. What a disappointment. The only thing I enjoyed was the green sauce, this is the reason I gave them one star. read more

I was first introduced to this place when the owner allowed the youth committee to eat on the house for a special event. Ever since then, I've fell in love with Peruvian food! You can't go wrong with anything on the menu; it's surely cooked from the heart. The owner is so sweet! Seafood, meats, sauces...yum I can go for some right now. Came here recently for a get together my friend hosted. The entire restaurant was shut down for us and I really enjoyed myself. The food was SO good and the staff was extremely nice and welcoming. Last night, I decided to drag my husband along. We ordered salchipapa (hot dogs nd french fries), chaufa mixta (fried rice with beef and steak), lomo saltada (strips of steak tossed with fries, onion/pepper in a soy"ish" type of sauce and maduros (fried sweet plantains). The food came out super fast and was really good. My husband hates cilantro though and the lomo saltado was heavy on it. Just an FYI because I know some people either LOVE or hate cilantro. I enjoyed everything. We ate ALOT and had left overs, our bill was $35, not bad! Side note, the waitress did not really want to be flexible. We asked if instead of white rice with the lomo could we have another side since we were ordering chaufa and she said no because it just comes together. But then it came without the white rice....Confusing but W/E. The food is good, so try it out! read more

This place is a diamond in the rough. I mean the food was INCREDIBLE. I had something along the lines of Ceviche and a fried plate of seafood. The owner of the restaurant came out to graciously greet me and ask me how the food was, I never felt so welcomed at a restaurant. He had a genuine smile on his face. The interior decor and lighting was great, adequate for the space he had. I was just looking forward to the food. See I have a dietary restriction(I only eat Halal meat) so to my delight when I found out the restaurant abides by halal standards as well, I went buckwild. The Ceviche-like dish was fresh and didn't taste fishy or smelly at all. All of the food was great. Portions were HUGE. I can't wait to come back to this location. Came here with my brothers. Had Calimari to start... It was perfectly cooked and seasoned! Then ordered the lg Argentinian churasco, chicken and beef chaufa, white rice, beans, sweet plantains, and shrimp ceviche. EVERYTHING was absolutely delicious. This place never disappoints! I don't understand how this place is still in business. Worst customer service, worst food on bergenline. We were a large group of 13 which is why I dare to write a review, because I was able to see different plates. But honestly the food does not make up for the nasty service from the waitresses there. The plates were not all served in proportion some had more then others( even if they were the same thing), some meats were extremely dry. But WOW the service from the lady at the front, the cashier. She couldn't divide the bill for us, I found a hair in my plate which I was billed for also. The whole experience for us was a big disappointment. We went to this place for the first time. They seated ha and gave us menus. There was a whole chicken (plain) on the menu for $10. We ordered it. The waitresses first response was no, we can't do that. What we have is a whole chicken with a side of fries for $26. Okay, but we don't want fries. We want the whole chicken plain for $10 as advertised. Her only response was, no. We asked why not, it's on your menu? She said that's an old menu and they have new ones coming. Okay, I get that, but you're giving me a menu that shows a whole plain chicken for $10... Her response once more, "no". They refused to honor what was on their menu. I've been to this restaurant a couple times, since I work nearby and I must admit it's one of the best restaurants around. When I don't have lunch this is my to go. Since the first time I went, the lady in the front was very sweet to me and she even recommended me what to try. But the main reason why I rate 5 stars is because of the cleanliness. it was pretty expensive, as i'm used to the bargains at all the cuban and mexican places on bergenline. plus, i was startled when i got the bill because they included the tip in it, which i think is boorish, indeed. my wife, due to the apparently still existent rivalries between her native ecuador and peru, complained constantly and harassed the stoic waitresses. i thought the steak was grand, as were the french fries and rice. i'm not really enthused about the little peanut appetizers, but the sauce was good. eating at fruit punch cafe made me really enthusiastic about what a wonderful culture the peruvians have as they are less uptight around non-hispanic outsiders. i would say it's gringo friendly and a group of prominent looking men in good physical shape had a huge jug of wine that they were slurping on. lower your prices a tad, guys, because they're costly for this modest area, and/ or at least stop including the tip in the pay check, and you'll be positively exquisite. read more
