the outside of a grocery store
Peter C.

This grocery store actually shuttered back in 2019 pre-pandemic. There were many bottlenecks on the new owners reopening this store, they actually remodeled the storefront to look more modern and unfortunately had to tear it down after some busybody in the neighborhood decided to complain to the city. Fast forward 3 years they reverted back to the original storefront and reopened for business. One thing I missed is the fruit and vegetable puns on the back wall. The store was very well remodeled and clean. The shelves are all well stocked and their inventory is fresh. On my visit, I came to buy pasta to make dinner and they have a huge selection available. The pricing is very competitive for convenience at a walking distance from home. The produce here is also very fresh and they have items at reduced price to move their inventory faster. There is also a flower shop on the side that is also run by Fruit Barn. The staff here are very friendly and are open to feedback on making the store better. Overall a win for the neighborhood, as this increases competition for the grocery market on Ocean Ave.

Fruit Barn is in the Ingleside neighborhood. It is a great spot to pick up stables especially affordable produce & even some organic produce. Small Bulk bin w/ staples. Organic pasta, hummus, & salsa. No non-dairy yogurt. No tempeh. Yet bulk tofu that sells for 4 blocks for $1.00 which was very affordable. They had no refrigerated soy milk yet they had the smaller size non-refrigerated non-dairy milks including soy milk, almond milk, & rice milk. For speciality items in the neighborhood there is a Whole Foods a short walk from here yet this is a good place to pick up produce & some staples.

So good and fresh!

The owner is funny guy that will share with you. He had me try a raspberry chocolate bar with him. Then he told me that I made good choices on my groceries. The store itself is small but there are a lot of goodies to choose from. Ample fruits outside and lots of nuts and vegetables inside. Just your local grocery with the necessities.

My assumption is they're all CCSF students and don't care unless you confront them with a question. This store does seem to have a robust cheese section, but other areas/whole sections of shelves were completely bare today (10/5/26). I don't typically buy precut fruit, but was in the mood today--no dice, only very limited and sad looking options left. Salad bar was missing all varieties of lettuce (nearly empty romaine, spring mix, spinach), which was my goal for my stop in. I got a small cup of tomato soup to my hunger void (yummy, but pretty hard to mess up). Given the layout of the store, you'll have to search around for what you need (coffee was on an end cap near the bread/hot bar). Ambience is...a grocery store. No area that I saw to sit and eat, but there are some cement slabs outside. Overall, glad I have other options closer to me and don't rely on this store. If you shop this Whole Foods with low expectations, you'll be good.

I will say that some of the Asian seafood markets can be a hit or miss. Based on my experience, a…read morelot of factors must be considered. For me, the seafood has to "smell" fresh without a pungent fishy odor that can deter you away. This takes me to "Ocean Seafood Market" where I stocked up on some seafood before my drive back to Sacramento. Located at the Ingleside neighborhood of San Francisco and directly on Ocean Ave and adjacent to Miramar Ave, this business is only a few blocks from City College of San Francisco. During my visit which was on Saturday 9/5/2026 at around 4:45pm, I was able to park only a block away which was a big plus. I also noticed that if you park on one of the residential streets off of Ocean Ave, parking is free and easier to find. The business itself has been around since mid-2022 and to those that might remember, this is where a laundromat once stood for many years. From the outside, there's not much to see besides a blue awning with the business name. And in case you're wondering, they are open 7 days a week from 10am-6pm. The inside of the store isn't quite the cleanest by no means but it is fairly easy to navigate towards the back where much of the live sea creatures are located. During my visit, I was able to pick up live Coonstripe Shrimp (also known as baby prawns) for $19.99/lb. I also bought fresh Dungeness Crab that was priced at a very reasonable $10.99/lb. And to complete my seafood shopping experience, I picked up a small variety of Uni (Sea Urchins) as well as bok choy and broccoli all at fairly reasonable prices. The food here is really hit or miss as much of this depends on the time of day you come. There was definitely a language barrier but the staff was polite and friendly. All in all, I had an above average experience at "Ocean Seafood Market". The real test was when I made the trek home and actually cooked all of this seafood. I will say that the finished product was well worth the money. My shrimp tasted amazing with the addition of butter and Old Bay seasoning while the crab had lots of meat that made every bite very savory. Even when I sauteed the veggies, this was fresh and delicious when I paired that up with the Uni. With that said and done, I am giving Ocean Seafood Market in San Francisco an above average four-star rating.

I typically avoid shopping on Ocean Ave since parking can be challenging. With the gentrification of the neighborhood and the influx of Chinese businesses to cater those who live in the area, the foot traffic and business atmosphere has starkly improved in recent years. Used to be, my only reasons for coming to Ocean were McD's, CVS (now closed), and, back in the day, Church's Fried Chicken (long gone and missed). I found parking about a half a block away a little after 9 am and walked by several businesses that were mostly closed or about to open, restaurants and a hardware store respectively. As I walked in, I noticed the butcher counter to the left and some self-serve refrigerators across with bottled goods on shelves just above them. There is only one aisle to the right and the cashier counter is to the immediate right by the window. In shopping here, do be mindful of your surroundings as they are often restocking the meat counters and fish tanks as well as hauling ice. I found my two shopping items within three minutes and was out of here in about five minutes. A gentleman was buying a couple of live fish, likely for a restaurant as he requested a written receipt for tax reporting purposes. I came here once a few years ago on a holiday to buy something that I needed to cook lunch so it wasn't my first visit. The left gated area (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=x5Zw2VaalFAYeHDrKaAnhg&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q) seems to be their warehouse/storage area. The stock is nothing concretely substantive with produce or meats as would be standard in most Latin-American-Mexican groceries but it does have the typical stocks that would interest Asian customers, English speaking customers writ large of the Ingleside area as far as dry foodstuffs and sundry: Energy drinks, chips, some fruits and vegetable produce, frozen foods such as frozen yuca (root vegetable similar to the potato that you can fry and boil), along with some condiments and seasonings that can be used in Asian cuisine and dishes in spite their target Latin American/Mexican intended dishes. And although some would consider the store redundant in offerings, I would caution that sometimes, whenever someone can't find something in one store in the neighborhood, you can always go to another grocer that may have what you're precisely looking for as far as basic foodstuffs and sundry. That said, the service, usually of one person or two available to expedite your transactions, is more than enough to get you from where you want to be. If you are more of a casual shopper that wants an "in-and-out" experience, this place is a good place to stop by on foot or locals that are on their way to catch the San Francisco MUNI K-Ingleside or T-Third Street light rail transit trains hither or fither. A real life saver and breath of fresh air and variety from the typical of the Ingleside grocer offerings!

Mind you, there are other locations closer to my house, but I like coming here more. I drove my mom to come purchase the .88 cents pasta. Deborah, elderly white lady rang us up. I enter my mom's number, however, it didn't accept her number because the pasta came out to $20. I showed Deborah that I clipped the coupon on the app and all she said was- well.. it says it's $20. She then scan the coupon barcode on the paper ad but it still didn't change the price. I asked if I can re-enter my mom's number and she huffed and puffed and made it a big deal then it needs to be. She complained that if I want to re-enter the number then she have to return every thing and start all over again with an eye roll and head tilt. Which is weird because we don't even finish the transaction so why do I have to return every thing. I'm sure there is a void option. Even if she have to void the whole transaction, then do so. I work retail as well, and we have the option to let our customers to re-enter their number and a void item option if customers decided they don't want an item. Now she's just standing there telling me- well what do you want to do? It says here it's limited to 12. I recounted my pasta and confirm it's 12. And she's still telling me it has to be 12. I said yes it's 12, but can I re-enter the number. Again, she goes- so I have to start everything all over again. I told my mom to place all the pasta back on the counter. I quickly wobbly myself back to the pasta section to make sure I got the correct pasta that's on sale. (I'm healing from leg surgery and I'm only one week out of the hospital) She finally let me re-enter the number and it accepted my mom's number. Then she complained that I enter it wrong. So if I entered it wrong, and I ASKED TO RE-ENTER THE NUMBER, why would you NOT let me! Yes it's late (7pm) and every one wants to go home. She's old and tired I'm sure but I think she needs to find another job if letting a customer re-enter their number is such a hassle. Customer service may not be for you.

The Price: Easily some of the best values in the city. The Con: Sealed Packaging: Everything is pre-sealed in 1lb plastic bags. Because of the sealing, you can't smell the tea before buying. I'd love to see them implement scent jars in the future to help with the selection process. Neutral Observations In-House Packaging: All the tea is packaged identically in 1lb bags, which suggests they likely process and bag everything in-house. Labeling: I didn't notice any specific organic labels on the packaging, though I didn't explicitly ask. If this is a deal breaker, you may want to ask. Review If you're looking for a genuine loose leaf tea source -- your search ends here. I stumbled upon this place after endless online searching (blogs, search engines, etc) and it was well worth the effort! Just a heads-up on navigation: G-Maps is slightly off. If you rely solely on that, you'll be a few doors down. Look for the Volvo mechanics and the shop is located just on the other side. The exterior is unassuming, no windows, just a sandwich board on the sidewalk and a door. Looking inside it's a bit of a mysterious vibe, you'll see a stairway to the left and a hallway ahead. Go for it. Ignore the single pane glass, bank-teller-style window to your right (which directs you to the main door) and just head in. Also, keep an eye on the clock because, per the phone tree, they close for lunch from 12:30 to 1:00. I arrived right after 1pm and was able to park right in front. There was also plenty of other parking spot around at that time. IDK why, but before walking in, my imagination had prepared me for an old-world San Francisco opium den. I was thinking there was going to be this lingering aromatic smoke, plush floor pillows, people lounging, sipping tea, and the soft, ambient melodies of an upscale spa. I had also pictured rows of heavy, whiskey-style wooden barrels overflowing with loose leaf tea, topped with clear lids and metal scoops. The reality is much more utilitarian. This is not a den or a spa. It's clean, straightforward, and focused entirely on their product. The selection is robust and incredibly diverse. While they claim "wholesale to the public", I can't verify the industry margins, but I can tell you the prices are very good for the quality you receive. The employee greeted me and then stayed hands-off while I browsed, which I appreciated. When I did ask specifics, they had basic foundational knowledge. Honestly with the diversity and sheer quantity of products offered, it would take forever to earn a Tea Master badge. No harm no foul. The only real bummer here is that everything is pre-sealed in 1lb plastic bags, so there is no way to smell the product. I'd really appreciate scent jars in front of the bags. Since they seem to be doing the packaging in-house anyway, it makes me wonder why they haven't set aside a small amount of each batch for scent jars. It wouldn't require a change in their supply chain, just a few ounces and a glass jar to help customers navigate that massive variety. That aside, I absolutely loved this place. I've been searching for a spot like this for a long time. I'm just glad I finally found it. If you're at all interested in loose leaf tea, I'd suggest giving these folks an honest try.
