I have been meaning to try this restaurant for years. And so today, I did. If you didn't know that…read moreit was there, you would miss it. Directly across from the Post Office, it seems almost hidden by the overgrown brush in the landscaped areas. The positive: 1.) The cream cheese wontons are INSANELY good!! The chili dipping sauce is quite spicy, and I did enjoy it. 2.) The Miso soup had a hearty taste, which I found to be unique. 3.) I chose a Dynamite Roll as I was at a loss as to the choice to make. It was very good. 4.) Overall, the actual food entries were quite enjoyable. The "not-so-positive": 1.) This place is in definite need of a complete makeover. Paint, ceiling tiles, T-bars, lighting, flooring, etc. It felt dingy and a bit dirty. 2.) I did not go into the kitchen, of course, but I did watch the young man at the counter making sushi. Sushi is supposed to be part of a presentation/event. But you can't sit at the counter (there isn't one). You have to go on faith. 3.) The service was INCREDIBLY slow. There was a party of nine, a party of six, and several other tables ahead of me. The waitress was bouncing all over the place. Making bobas, taking orders in person and over the phone, busing a dish or two, probably doing some prep and plating in the kitchen, and who knows what else. She was seemingly stressed. 4.) Oh, they also chose Sunday night (which is typically a quiet night, per the waitress) to train two new employees. Oops. 5.) Oh, I did not visit the restrooms, probably I was better off if I were to guess. But a big "shout out to the young man making bobas, drinks--his 3rd day. As I was waiting, I was watching. Besides the drinks, he managed the till, bussed a dish or two, and had a very polite, pleasant personality--the star of the show in my opinion. Oh, and Grandma (you know who you are - 3 grandchildren), please get your head out of your cell phone and get your grandchildren under control. They were really, really disturbing to everyone there. Will I go back? There's no other choice if I want Japanese again. Adrian is a small town.

I don't want to hold it against them if the price of keeping fresh ingredients is sometimes running out of chopped green onions every so often. I tend to go during odd hours to eat so I'm usually not in a lunch or a dinner mix. For this reason, the place isn't crazy busy, leading to nice undivided attention. I do see it possibly becoming an issue if it was to get super busy. Each bowl is made-to-order, which means every customer gets full attention from ordering to check out. Maybe it's because the business hasn't picked up enough to warrant having a full assembly line like your Subways and Chipotles of the world. We'll have to see. As I was saying, ingredients are fresh, which is half of the battle for poke bowls. Sauce and side choices are very good, and best of all, your dollar goes a long way. I can easily fill myself up with relatively healthy bowl of poke for around ten bucks, and you get free miso soup!! Considering any fast food meals will cost a good fifteen bucks these days, I'm happy I can opt for a healthy choice for less.

Excellent portion for a great price. We paid about 12-14$/bowl and I was full. Fresh fish, great topping variety and sauces. I personally loved the ponzu. The spicy mayo was a bit spicier than I expected. Looking forward to the next visit.

I came here today while waiting to pick a friend up from work. I saw good reviews on yelp and…read morethought I should give it a try though I was weary (I can usually tell a good boba shop just from the pictures online). When I walked in, it seemed pretty bare but I like that there was spaced out seating. Other than that, the ambience is definitely lacking. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee and it was... not a Vietnamese coffee. Vietnamese coffee is meant to have a strong flavor and have a rich but subtle sweetness from the sweetened condensed milk. What I got was poor quality black coffee with too much sweet creamer. I checked out the ramen bar just to see what it was but it was also lacking. There were many options and I didn't see any toppings of any kind (I'm think they were refrigerated but it would have been nice to have them displayed in a fridge next to the area; maybe it was and I missed it).. I can also tell they are attempting to go for a third space type of vibe with board games and things but the space they have created isn't inviting enough to uphold that environment. As far as the service goes, he was very kind and patient which goes a long way. I asked him if he could just add a little more coffee so it wasn't as sweet and he said that he could just remake it for me and that he wanted me to enjoy my drink. It was far above what I expected and I really respect that. The drink was again, not very good because it just wasn't Vietnamese coffee, but the service was very thoughtful. I just didn't feel right asking him to make a whole other drink I would like because I didn't like the one I had (I'm not a Karen lol). I'm sure other fruity drinks or the dalgona coffee is better that what I had and I just happened to choose poorly off the menu, but I do strongly believe businesses shouldn't just add popular drinks to their menu to bring people in but focus strongly on what they are good at. It's always better to have a small menu of well curated and crafted drinks than a large menu of drink with some of them not quite perfected. With that being said, I probably won't be back but I hope they can find what they are best at, hone in on it, and grow a lot! I see huge potential in this store being quite popular if they make a few changes. Best wishes to them!

That intrigued me enough to revisit and try the drink out this past week. Thai Milk Tea, Small w/ Boba ($6.40) - As I was ordering, I was told that the sweetness couldn't be adjusted since the the tea was premade and mixed with sweetener. It's a little unfortunate, but it is what it is. On the first sip, the tea first starts with a somewhat dairy forward flavor, but immediately follows that up with an extremely roasted, smoky and somewhat astringent flavor of a very strongly brewed tea. About half a second later, an extreme sweetness floods the mouth but helps to balance out some of the smoky astringency. I'm not sure how they get it to be so smoky - I regularly brew Thai tea in an espresso machine and I've never gotten it to be so strong before. It's also much smokier than any Thai tea I've had in restaurants. The sweetness is a bit too much for me. After sipping a bit, I decided to save the rest for later and add some fresh brewed Thai tea to temper the sweetness down a bit. The boba this visit is a big improvement over my previous visit. This time, it's not rock hard; instead, the boba has a decent chew on the exterior while retaining quite a bit more firmness in the center. I found the boba to be a bit on the lumpier side and a little inconsistent in shape but it's not bad. Drink Rating: 3/5 Boba Rating: 3/5 I also asked for a small sample of the black tea. This is also pre-sweetened, probably on the order of 25% or 50% vs. a fully sweetened drink as compared to other boba shops. For my tastes, it actually right on the dot: not too sweet, which allows some of the natural tea fragrance to really be at the forefront of the drink without being drowned out. I honestly would get this tea as a milk tea without any additional sweetener added. Bobalee is a first mover into Ypsilanti. It's a very well run business, with friendly staff and great ambiance. As I mentioned in my previous review, this is a business that's worth supporting. Bathrooms - Single unisex room in the back.
