My husband and I love fondue and have had it everywhere from Switzerland to Melting Pot. We were…read morereally excited to try this place during our honeymoon. Unfortunately we were pretty disappointed. The price was very high for fondue but we were willing to give it a shot. But when the server brought out the fondue with a half inch of liquid on top and warned us we would have to stir the fondue a lot to keep it from splitting, we knew we were in trouble. I've never seen fondue split like that. There was an inch or so of runny milk on top and a gluey blob of cheese in the middle no matter how much we stirred. It was a shame because the flavor was pretty good but the texture gave me the ick. And the quality to price ratio was outrageous. We might consider trying them again for chocolate fondue but I wouldn't come back for cheese.

The fondue personally was good but not satisfying enough for a dinner alone. I actually preferred dipping the cooked meat and seafood from the other side of the table. It's a fun experience but for the price I wouldn't come back again.

What a cute little shop! I came across this at the market,…read moreand it must've been a sign because I have been on the hunt for two particular cheeses. The store is not that big, but it made it cozier in a way. The layout is easy: spreads/jams in the front, then the cheese. Everything is labelled nicely, where you can see the country and the cheeses offered. Of course, the people who work there are knowledgeable about most cheeses. Keep in mind, because it's a small shop, the selection won't have everything in the world of cheese. That being said, I did find one of the French cheeses I was searching for and came across some that were a bonus to try. I ended up having an array of different countries in my basket. I'm talking Ireland (Dubliner), France (Camberet) and surprisingly Norway (Skiqueen). I would've left with more, but they either didn't stock the other particular cheeses or didn't carry them. I had to cut myself off because the pricing can rack up here. My only irk was that I wish they had more variety of spreads. I expected more variety.

A cheese lovers paradise- House of Cheese has pretty much anything your looking for- though…read moresometimes for a price! The wafting smell of stinky cheese will draw you in from the market stalls to a small space packed with a great variety of cheeses from Canadian cheddars, Okas, wonderful Quebec cheeses, British specialties and of course the incomparable French varieties. The staff are crusty but knowledgeable and the if you ask, they will be able to recommend something suited to your palette and wine/meal pairing. My husband and I discovered a few great cheeses while on holiday in France which they stock. Mont D'or is a melty cheese that comes in a small wooden pot which you heat in the oven and dip your bread into. It is very much to die for but it's only available around xmas time and it's 3x the price here than it is in France! The other favourite of ours is from the Beaufort region. It's a hard cheese with a creamy/nutty taste- really nice as part of a cheese platter selection.

I like it in my sandwiches, crumbled on my salads, baked in my pasta dishes.. Heck! I like to cut myself a piece and "nom" it while I'm waiting for my dinner to cook. My favourite location for cheese shopping is the House of Cheese. Conveniently located in the Byward Market, it is easy to pop in during an afternoon of running errands. As you would expect of a House of Cheese, this store features all kinds of cheeses in various textures, flavours and varieties. They have cheeses from all over the world and a variety of local cheeses! An avid locovore, I am a huge fan of planning and shopping for my meal in the market and often return home with a fabulous cheese from The House of Cheese. Throughout the year, they also have various gift baskets available that would make great Christmas gifts, year end gifts for teachers or even house warming presents. The staff is very knowledgable and ready with recommendations as the various kinds of cheeses can be somewhat overwhelming. If you are looking to pair your cheese with something a little different, they also carry various spreads, crackers and jellies. It is a great place to pop in if you are hosting a party and looking for something a little more than the basic "cheese and cracker" plate.
