My neighbor friend and I continue to try out different restaurants in the area that serve well-reviewed pastrami sandwiches. Fritzankotters in Huntington Beach got mentioned, so my wife, our neighbor, and I decided to come down for lunch at the deli, and then spent the afternoon at nearby Sunset Beach. It ended up being a good day at lunch and a great afternoon. The restaurant is located in an older strip mall, near the corner of Warner and Springdale. The mall had a lot of surface, uncovered spots, so parking wasn't a problem around lunch time. One orders and pays at the counter, and the sandwiches are brought out to you when dining in. The menu consists of both cold and hot sandwiches. There is a self serve ice water jug, along with a self-serve pickles (sliced kosher dills) and peppers (both pepperoncini and cascabella). It's a really nice touch and we took advantage. One thing that made me do a double take was the offer of $3 anytime pints of the house lager on tap. It was confirmed by the owner that it was correct, and each of us got a glass. Clover is the payment system used here, and was able to get a text with the bill. It took a bit of time for the sandwiches to come out. Our friend and I split two hot sandwiches. First being a Mock Ruben ($12.50) consisting of Corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut, and mustard on rye. I thought it was good, with a nice meld of flavors and well grilled/toasted bread (not a strong rye). Friend thought it was dry. We both agreed my sandwich was much better, Cousin Eddie ($14.25) consisting of pastrami, swiss, deli mustard, 1000 island, and pickled red cabbage. It came on a soft hoagie roll, and the flavors really melded together well. My wife got a Messi ($14.25), a roast beef with pepperjack with chimichurri and onions on ciabatta. Since my wife is not a fan of neither chimichurri and onions, I asked for it on the side, which was recorded that way on the bill. For some reason, a custom item charge of $0.75 was put on the bill (thinking it was for the side of chimichurri), and unfortunately there was chimichurri on the sandwich which my wife gamely tried to pick off. None of the sandwiches were large, nor were any of them stacked with that much meat. In fact I was able to eat half of each of the sandwiches, but for the price, I thought it was very reasonable. The pickle and pepper bar is a great idea, letting anybody add some zing to any sandwich. The service was friendly, as the owner genuinely seemed to care what we thought (though my wife didn't feel like complaining about the chimichurri). And the pints of the house blonde on tap was a bargain. They seem to have a pizza night on Thursday, and the beer would absolutely hit the spot then. read more

Great sandwich shop. The staff is so friendly and there is a lot of great seating inside. They're open in the evenings and have beer and wine too so more of a hangout shop vs grab and go (although you still can grab and go). Sandwiches are really good. Good bread and good combos. read more

Was craving a sandwich mid work day, so we ordered from Fritz for the first time. We got the Bronx, Bette Midler and Pasta Salad. Bronx was with the hot peppers, and it was good, but bread and overall quality of ingredients didn't make it great. It was better than the Bette Midler, which felt like a pastrami sandwich a bachelor would make at home. Nothing special. Pasta salad may be the best thing, but was pretty standard. We were in a Sub sandwich kind of mood last week. We both looked at each other and said "Fritzankotter's " at the same time! (We have been lunching together each week for decades!) We both revere the meals we have enjoyed here over the past few years. We confidently surveyed the menu, he went with the turkey sub (he is trying to be good). I selected the hot Italian! With the peppers and hot salami! We were both raving about our sandwiches when they arrived when we realized they were being delivered almost instantly by a very beautiful woman! I drive by this place all the time, and after seeing their Instagram packed with drool-worthy sandwich photos, I was honestly mad at myself for not stopping in sooner. When I think classic deli, this place absolutely delivers and then some. We ordered the Cousin Eddie, the Turkey Special, and the Fanelli--and my husband and I actually fought over the last bite of each sandwich. We were disappointed about the amount of meat on our sandwich. Small meat portion for the price of $17 a sandwich. We were disappointed with the "All bread". This was our first time here. Was the cook in a hurry? We will give it another shot. Maybe I'll order with "extra" meat to get what should've been served in the first place. But overall the place is worth trying. We came back again to have a sit down experience this time over the weekend and I was underwhelmed. I wanted to try something different and got the Bette modeler because I'm a pastrami fan so the cashier recommended another pastrami sandwich that she said in line with what most people think pastrami is? She said the lean version isnt what I think it is so I didn't want to question her rec. It was ok, but I still prefer board and brew's left coast pastrami to this. This place has the pickle bar but I like the sauce that board gives you to go with their pastrami. To each their own I suppose. Lived in HB all my life and just found this place from Instagram. I've tried the Chicken Caesar Wrap, the Smashed Meatball Sub, and the Zac Efron. All have been really good. Drove all the way from Riverside and it was 100% worth it. The food was absolutely amazing, there's plenty of seating, and the inside has such a cute, welcoming vibe. Huge shoutout to Cynthia she was incredibly sweet and gave us great recommendations. I convinced my girlfriend to make the hour drive with me to try this place, and we were both blown away. The new owners changed the name of my favorite sandwich from Lucifer to Lucy, got rid of the sprouts and that beautiful marbled rye bread, and added lettuce. As you can see from my before and after photos, they've also reduced the amount of meat. I'm disappointed. read more

Used to come to this place a lot when I was in high school with my best friend. Loved the names of all the sandwiches. Famous people.: I think back in the day I used to get the hell and curly brown. (she used to be the editor in chief of cosmopolitan back then). Now the sandwiches are named after. Messi or Zac Efron! lol What got me in on this Saturday was a girlfriend who sent me a reel of a meatball sandwich with mozzarella and pesto. It looked absolutely delicious. So when I opened it to see where is this restaurant close to me it was Fritzankotters! I told her hey I used to go there all the time when we were in high school she never went. If you haven't been here you need to go and make it a regular stop. The food was outstanding but the service from the owners Gabby and Cynthia was what made our visit excellent, 5 star! Both Cynthia and Gabby took the time to stop and talk with us, give us recommendations for our lunch and checked in with us while we were eating. Such great customer service. You had me at pickle bar. I visited Fritzankotters this past Saturday after a long afternoon of yard work. I guess I wasn't the only one with sandwiches on the brain, because this eatery was filled with locals chowing down on their own lunch of choice. The wait ended up being about 20 minutes for a few cold cuts. I ended up ordering a number of Turkey Specials and the Zac Efron for myself - heated, because I'm anti-cold sandwiches. To be honest, I can't remember what was on this sandwich, but it was as delicious as the man himself. From memory alone, it had thinly sliced turkey and the best tomato aioli that I'd like to take to my grave. Fritzankotters serves a number of deli sides and favorites. I loved their fridge filled with take-and-bake lasagna! I ordered a side of their potato salad to share with the crew. This dish was tasty with thick sliced potatoes and the yummiest seasoning. I ended up keeping it all to myself. For those looking to dine-in, there's a number of tables and booths available indoors and an outdoor patio for those sunny HB days. The best part? I've been going here for 26 years and it's just changed ... bread not soft, they forget my order and then made it quick after asking about it. The girl had gloves on and went in and out to over 6 people and then back making sandwiches without changing gloves . 35 min for a sandwich is too long and all of this really turned me off . I stood off to the side for about another 15 minutes and my order finally came up. My pastrami with mustard and pickles was delicious; the pastrami is some of the most tender I've ever had. My issue is with the wait. I don't know if this was a typical lunch hour or they were just extra busy that day. I'll try again but if this is typical I don't know that I'll be back.
