My husband and I are born/bred Mainers, looking forward to celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary at the Inn. We read the policy and booked two evenings. However, on our way up, our car broke down and we had to head home, trauma in itself. I called right away to cancel and explain the circumstances to the owners and hoped to receive some other future booking there, rather than loose our cash. The unfortunate answer was no. They refused to make any refund or bend their policy in any way. My husband wrote a kindly email explaining our situation, once again, but never received a reply. We understand the need for policies and support that, but flexibility for certain unavoidable circumstances should, we believe, also be considered. Their lack of any empathy to our situation and uncouth, unpolished manners reflects very poor customer service and cancels any future wish to ever stay at the Blue Hill Inn. These innkeepers are clearly from away and do not, in any way, mirror REAL Maine hospitality! So, if you book there, you'll loose your money, if you have to suddenly cancel, even for an unexpected accident or God forbid a death!!

I hung up called again, same woman answered again no name said it was a new phone system and was having trouble was on hold over 7 minutes and she hung up on me this time. Employee needs to be retrained so she knows how to work the equipement. Persons cell phone wasn't working and the reason calling the hotel directly.

Someone complained in another review that there are stairs up to the third floor. It is true. They are wooden, steep, and full of character. The floors are original and slope and creak as expected, but are beautifully painted and well kept. Our room was beautiful and the bathroom was perfect, looking like it was remodeled yesterday. Since we realized there was not going to be a lot of dining choices, we stopped at a grocery on our way in for a light picnic dinner of cheese, crackers, fruit and a bottle of wine to enjoy by the water. It was a perfect evening to watch the sunset on one of the two waterfront areas on the property. It was only my husband and me. We could see another couple sitting on the rocks, but it still felt so private and it truly felt like something out of a romantic movie. The next morning we enjoyed the best blueberry muffins provided by the host and coffee on the front porch of the inn. As we sat looking down toward the water both a deer and a red fox came through the yard as a humming flew around the beautiful flowers. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. I almost want to keep this gem a secret!

The Inn itself is quaint and historic and the perfect location for an event or a group getaway. It is right next to the water and just beautiful. There are canoes to use as well as games and books inside. They are also just great restaurant and bar as well, with amazing specialty drinks and an eclectic collection of local beer and IPAs on tap. I highly recommend this place for your summer or fall getaway. I know we'll be back.

It ended up being one where we had a pretty big storm, and that actually made this hotel an even better place to stay. Basics: great location right downtown (if you look at the map and it looks like it's a bit out of the downtown range, it's not; this is a small town and you can walk from 250 Main to the heart of it within 5 minutes). The hotel itself doesn't have parking, but there's street parking or you can park free in the harbor lot across the street (you may want to check this if you're coming during high season). The welcome vibe is immediately evident not only from the super nice and helpful staff, but because check-in time is also when 250 Main starts its happy hour wine social downstairs, which is perfect! And if you reserve directly with the hotel, you get a complimentary glass of vino. I literally met friendly people from the minute I checked in, and we hung out with a glass of wine for awhile before heading out. You can purchase from a small menu of wine and beer until around midnight, which turned out to be a great thing when the storm rolled in the next night of my stay. With the warm and relaxed vibe, hanging out in the lobby area is part of the experience. My room was a queen room with a small balcony overlooking the harbor--which on their website is described as "small," but it definitely is not! Fantastically comfortable bed (which honestly seemed larger than my own queen at home); big bathroom with an awesome rain shower, heated towel racks, and robes; plenty of space to move around in the room itself, which also had a desk and a little sitting area. Oh, and super high ceilings and HUGE windows. While I neglected to get a pic *inside* the actual room [insert facepalm here], check out the cool views of the snowstorm from the windows and balcony. If you don't want to venture out for breakfast in the morning, there are light options available (croissants, yogurt, fruit, etc.)--with delicious coffee from local Rock City Coffee. Huge points too for keeping a coffee and tea station open in the lobby all day and night. With the term "boutique" being tossed around these days willy-nilly, I'm always thrilled to find a place that lives up to it. 250 Main is definitely worth the splurge!

They have brought a remarkable vision to an otherwise pretty ordinary dining experience at this historic 1793 inn in charming Deer Isle (we know bc we dined here last year, too). For this their first year their executive chef Courtney Burns has done something really innovative: she's brought in a summer of guest chefs, each who serves for a month or so, during which they prepare a menu reflecting their unique vision, drawing from the bounty of local and regional Maine small batch artisanal ingredients. This is brilliant: a rotation of innovative chefs each with their own vision. So long as the quality remains high, then one can return to dine at the same place but with a different menu several times over any given season. We were lucky to have meals designed by chef Andre Garza, from Houston. I had the short ribs. They were delicious, cooked for 72 hours, very tender, served on a bed of slightly sweet carrot puree, and then topped with spray of arugula and a swirl of some very delicately infused oil, infused with just the faintest scent of a smoky pepper - not sure if it was chipotle or exactly what. I was a little concerned that the pepper influence might overwhelm the short ribs, but I was impressed with what was delivered. It was perfect. Whatever the specific pepper and technique he used was, he used it delicately and in such a way as to marry the umami experience of the short ribs against the sweet carrot puree and the slightly bitter arugula. It was actually very, very, VERY good and a lesser chef might have turned it into some tex mex experience, which I was not interested in on this occasion. The kitchen hit a home run with this. Others in the party had the baked halibut, served atop creamy grits, with a smoked fish sauce; and another had the the lobster toast and scallops in some citrus broth (two appetizers, as an entree). Everyone was very happy with their meals. Remarkable. I'd put this meal up against any great contemporary restaurant here or anywhere. We shared 2 desserts: a blueberry "crumble", more like a blueberry applesauce consistency, with thyme flower crumble on it (nice touch); and a very soft cheese with a dollop of dolce de leche next to it.. Both were really great, and together they were sublime. We're thrilled that the new team has taken the reins and will look forward for trying out the other guest chefs' creations over the course of the summer.

I'll start with the food: I am a food snob. Not a foodie.. a SNOB. When I cook at home, I use the highest quality ingredients and flavor matters. You'll never see me rave about food that contains any pre-made or processed ingredients. Restaurants are a low-profit business and typically cut corners to watch profits. So, it's rare to find a restaurant that takes obvious pride in their food and DELIVERS on that pride. The Homeport Tavern is a gem! We ordered the French onion soup and calamari appetizers and the Tavern burgers. The calamari was hand breaded and fresh, not from frozen. So delicious. The soup was the best French onion soup we've ever had - did I taste a hint of Jamaican all-spice? This tavern isn't afraid to use expensive spices to achieve ultimate taste. The burgers were to die for - incredibly fresh tasting grass fed angus, cooked to a perfect medium rare (most places can't seem to cook a proper medium rare, but the Tavern nailed it). The crispy fried piece of pork belly atop the burger was amazing - cut thick and seared at a high heat for a delightful texture and flavor. The coleslaw, obviously fresh and homemade with a poppy seed in-house dressing, was a nice palette cleanser between divine burger bites. Topping this all off is the best selection of draft beers we've seen in a while! Our server was perfect in every way. She was attentive, knowledgeable, accommodating, friendly, and professional. Top notch. Now let's get to the atmosphere. The Tavern is an adorable old Maine mixed with rustic old Irish charm type of architecture. We could hear Gaelic pub music - think minstrel - before walking in.
