I contacted Xcel Energy directly, and they inspected the issue and completed the necessary work within two days at no cost to me. Based on these facts, I believe I was asked to pay more than $2,000 for work that either was unnecessary or was the responsibility of the utility company rather than the homeowner. In my opinion, this was a serious attempt to charge me for work that I did not need to pay for. I strongly recommend that anyone receiving a costly estimate for service entrance or meter-related electrical work obtain a second opinion and contact their utility company before authorizing repairs. During their final visit, I asked for a quick quote to add an outlet onto a regular wall by pulling power straight up from an existing, parallel outlet below it. It is a very straightforward, 20-minute job. I have paid $150 for this exact service in the past, and a quick Google search confirmed the standard rate is around $250 to $300. Imagine my absolute shock when the technician quoted $724.85!! When he saw my stunned reaction, he said, "Let me see what I can do," tapped around on his screen, and lowered it to $608. He also quoted me roughly $500 just to hang two vanity lights that were already fully wired and just needed to be connected--another basic 20-minute task. My husband came home about 15 minutes later and was incensed. He asked the technician how he could possibly justify those numbers and firmly told him he was trying to take advantage of me. Once again, the technician said, "Let me see what I can do," pushed a few buttons on the iPad, and suddenly dropped the outlet price to $300ish--less than half of the original quote!! My husband pointed out the obvious: he was just arbitrarily making up numbers on the spot to see what he could get away with. The technician tried to lower the price even further, but at that point, we were both so disgusted by the dishonest behavior that we told him to finish the originally contracted work and leave. I needed a Ring video security light hard wired into a spot with an existing outdoor light and did not feel comfortable that I could get it right. This took about a half hour and it was up and running. Next, I had a bathroom outlet that wasn´t working, at least it wasn´t working for me, for like three years. Mr Magic plugged something into the socket and it worked perfectly. Hmmmm. Next, I told him my gas fireplace no longer turned on with the wall switch. I had been creaking down on my poor knees and pushing the button under the fireplace to turn it on. Mr. Magic flipped the wall switch and it roared into life. Two years of crawling around to start it. Two. Years. Magic, right? Finally, I needed an additional wall outlet in my front entryway, a few feet below an existing switch plate, so he neatly carved a hole in my wall and hooked up a new outlet, wiped away all the dust and I was all set!
