Place: This place is probably the only karaoke place I know in the area. You don't have reserve but sometimes it gets pretty busy. For those don't know how this works you can go with a group of your friends like 10-15 people and you get a private room where you get mics and have an hour to sing. Service: The service is ok. The owner is doing his job and he is strict with the hours so make sure you leave within the hour and just have one person pay for the group and venmo later. Went here for the first time with friends last night. "Sang" till 3 in the morning. Downsides: They don't serve alcohol here! We had to run around the corner to Champions. In retrospect, this probably saved us money, but having to leave while you're trying to belt out boys 2 men is a downer. The non-Korean music selection is also fairly limited. There were several times we looked for a popular/familiar song to no avail. It's also surprisingly expensive. We were there for about 2 hours and the bill came to $52! What the heck did we do in there for $52?!?!? Upsides: The room was decent and the equipment worked well. I've been to too many places where the mics or the video controller was pretty beat up. Also, they have a fun feature that scores your singing on each song. I'm proud to say that we stayed in the 90s all night long! They also let us stay past closing. So I didn't have the greatest experience, but I'm pretty sure that's just because karaoke might not be for me. I do want to separate that from my review of Friend's, though, but still, the place is not that great. The rooms are pretty clean, and there are quite a few of them (maybe 9 or 10?). We had about 11 people, and it didn't feel too crowded in one of the big rooms on the top floor. We were able to get all the songs (Chinese, English, and Korean) that we were looking for, so the song selection wasn't a problem for us. However, the controls are another story. There are no English labels on the remote at all, nor on the screen. If we hadn't had someone who could read Korean, there would be no way we could figure out how to use anything. This seems like a complete disregard for customers and really detracts from the experience a lot. The microphones are pretty loud, and there is quite a bit of reverb, especially if you hold it up close to your mouth. Tambourines are a nice addition -- anything to drown out the sound of my terrible singing is good. Friend's is also bring your own everything -- drinks and food. This isn't a huge deal, but it would be more convenient if they had some options. The pricing is also more than I would like. Prices are charged per hour based on your group size. For a group of 11-15, it was $5 per person per hour. The hour goes by pretty fast, so I wasn't as happy with the price as I thought I would be. The most cost effective plan might be 10 people, which is $40. In the end, Friend's is in a convenient location and it provides a clean place for karaoke. However, seeing as though they're just providing a room and microphones, I don't see why it's any different than hooking up YouTube to a monitor and jamming out on your own for free. Sitting on top of University Cafe, the owners decided to convert their top floor into a karaoke venue aka noraebang, with the literal Korean translation meaning 'singing room'. (Lame, right? Werdddd) If it weren't for my hatred towards NRBs, I would give this place four stars. Yet, somehow I find myself joining my fob friends and their obsessions with singing to their heart's content after a night out. For whatever your purpose is to satisfy any needs to sing, whether its to alleviate any fob impulses or to relieve stress, Friends Karaoke is a step above its alternative competition in Blue Karaoke. Granted, the rooms are smaller, but the legit service and the key location makes up for it. Basically, the dude who runs the place does not appear shady. Plus, you get free chips and a free DVD recording (upon request) if you even dare to watch yourself. And trust me, you will probably want to burn it afterwards. read more

My last memorable appearance on stage occured in the late nineties. As a proud member of the North Shore Country Day School Recorder Club (and chorus) I belted out some sweet tunes to a pretty large audience on the reg. While those days are long and gone, that doesn't mean I still don't passively search for opportunities to perform. That being said, Friends karaoke is a venue right up alley. Friends is gross, smells like stale sweat and is on south university and all the karaoke songs are in Korean. But whatever you know? You gotta work with what you have as an amateur before you make it to the top. Honestly, my only serious concern with Friends lies in the restroom. So, the door does not lock or actually close firmly. As someone who appreciates using the restroom with a door that is secure and everything I found myself a little very high anxiety (READ EXTREMELY ANXIOUS) about using the facilities here. I am a huuuge fan of karaoke (note-- other people probably aren't huge fans of my karaoke) Walking into this place, we almost missed it-- it is upstairs in a house right next to Ricks. We were promptly greeted and led into a karaoke room. Wow, the room smelled the the underside of Jabba the Hut's Balls, and that is the only reason why this place is getting 4 stars instead of 5. Other than that, there was a large plasma screen TV, high quality sound system, tambourines, a fan, and two microphones. All of these essentials make the foundation for a great karaoke experience! I may not be a famous singer, but Friends Karaoke gives you all the necessities to feel like Beyonce in front of your friends. We went here for part of a bachelorette party on a Thursday night. We booked from out of town based on reviews, so we were a little worried. Luckily, we had an awesome group to sing with because we weren't too impressed with the facility based on the previous positive reviews. First impressions are important, and our first impression was a room with a sticky floor, shady couch, and non-soundproof room. The biggest turnoff was that the guy monitoring the security was smoking and that smell filled the room. He was also pretty impatient with us when we were trying to figure out the all-Korean keyboard/machine. Once we figured it out, it was pretty easy and we had an awesome time, but the positive service reviews left on here just didn't add up. They should have a one-sheeter with simple instructions. Another con was that in the songbook, there were indeed a lot of songs in English, but they were listed alphabetically by song title, not by artist. That made finding songs difficult at first. Pros: BYOB, lack of service = lots of freedom, no interruptions, nice sound systems, goofy music videos. There were also a lot of people there on a Thursday night, so they're pretty popular. If Friends Karaoke upped their service and continued their remodeling, we would come here again with the same group of people. Better rates than Blue Karaoke. Convenience to campus. BYOB. This place has a lot going for it! Went here for a birthday bash recently and it was definitely memorable fun. But please, for the love of god, invest in some room ventilation!! Turn the air-conditioning on because, despite being drafty outside in the streets of Ann Arbor, this place steams up like a wet sauna! Nothing sexy about running make-up and sweaty underarms when you're belting out Rihanna, seriously. Or make sure you wear a tank top underneath all of your clothes so you can do your fave 90s jams some justice! Also, I wish they made the controllers easier to work. These things could be more user friendly. It's almost as if there needs to be at least one designated song-inputter of the group, not a fun job, and this is presuming that someone in your party is likely not drinking. I can read Korean, but dang, that remote is still Greek to me! Also, I'm really picky about song book albums. I think there should always be an album by ARTIST, not by SONG. I always think it's easier to find songs to sing when the book is organized by artist and band, like, hey, let's do 80s Madonna or a couple of Aerosmith songs. The owner's a really nice guy. However, the sound system... or whatever you call it, is pretty bad. What I mean is, you can barely hear yourself singing. I gotta resort to screaming or covering one of my ears to hear myself. Adjusting the volume/echo on the karaoke system doesn't do much. If you're just looking to have a fun night with friends, this place will do, I guess. A little less expensive than Blue Karaoke as well. read more
