Chicken taco was good but lacked a lot of flavor. Tamale was pretty good but I didn't like the sauce. It wasn't awful just not the flavor I like. The tamale itself had a good consistency and wasn't dry. The al pastor taco was excellent! There was a nice pork to pineapple balance and not too sweet. What a solid spot for a shindig! Frida Kahlo Mexican Restaurant has it goin on. I came here for a wedding reception last weekend. There's a cute banquet room off to the side that really can hold a lot of people! It also includes a separate bar. (Just give them a ring to reserve it!) The margaritas were great, tacos were fabulous. Parking is a non-issue. I look forward to coming back and ordering their storied tres leches cake! read more

A great find! We stopped in for lunch and were the only customers so we got attentive service! The house-made Sangria was refreshing and the lunch carnitas was enough for two meals! The baked goods looked delicious but we were too full to try this time around. Definitely would stop in again when in Solon. Only drawback was the trash bins near the outside patio. I have been to this place many times and would give this place 5 stars except for one bad visit long ago. Part the of the bad experience was my fault and the business recently opened and things were being worked out. Ever since that one visit things have ALWAYS been great! Friendly service clean establishment and always good food! They are also open late that helps if you need a meal after an event and nothing else is open during the week. Went for lunch on a Tuesday, a little before noontime, and we were the first customers. Opted to skip the buffet, which did not look very extensive, and ordered from the regular menu. The salsa was very, very nice. Food was served after about a 10 minute wait. Super Burrito was fairly large, and served with a side of lettuce, tomato and sour cream. Pretty good, but not great. I'm so glad I was finally able to make it to Frida Kahlo's and I'm already trying to plan out the next time I can go. As soon as I arrived, I immediately noticed how friendly the staff was: greeted right away by a waiter and the bartender. We could sit wherever we liked as it was a pretty casual atmosphere. We were give menus and chips & salsa right away. I really liked the salsa as it had flavor but was not spicy. I also ordered the queso and it was reasonably priced for a generous portion. It was hard to know what to pick as everything on the expansive menu sounded delicious, so I got the grande burrito to get a good baseline for the food. I went out of my comfort zone and got the al pastor (I usually get chicken) and I was not disappointed! Great flavor to the marinade with chunks of pineapple, along with the beans and rice in the burrito was a great mix. I loved that there was cheese, avocado, tomato, and sour cream on top. The waiter was attentive and I could tell the rest of the staff was working very hard. Service was fast but there was no rush to leave. We have often driven to Solon just to go to this restaurant for good Mexican food. Maybe now... not so much. I always get Chili Rellanos. This past visit I was served the dish soaked in grease. The beans and rice were soaked in grease. When the waiter asked "how is everything "? I showed him my uneaten meal. He apologized then gave us the bill for the full amount. He was a high school kid. I didn't want to make a scene. We paid and went on with the day. But I won't soon make that drive again. Better customer appreciation is needed. Or a policy in place when the meal is unacceptable. We've been to Frida Kahlo many times. What I like about it and what sets it apart is when they have the buffet. This seems to only be at lunch, only during the weekdays, and only during certain months of the year. But when they have it, it's a great deal. Yes, it has its problems. Multiple times, they've been out of tortilla shells and sometimes out of silverware, but otherwise I love it. There's usually rice, beans, beef, fajita chicken with pepper and onions, chips, queso, salsa, guacamole, lettuce, pico, cheese. Often there are fries or mini-burritos or other miscellaneous. It's not huge by any means, but it's a Mexican buffet so what's not to love? When they don't have the buffet, it's a pretty standard Iowa small-town Mexican restaurant. The food is fine, the service is usually decent, the ambiance is a mix of typical Mexican and sports bar. They do have outdoor seating in the summer and they do offer a few unique bakery items. This is definitely a good option if you are in the Solon area. read more

An average "authentic Mexican restaurant," which just so happens to have aspirations: having a theme, rather than just a random Spanish name. The decor did not so much describe Frida Kahlo, artist, as it looked like an "authentic Mexican restaurant" that fancied itself to be appreciative of said artist. The seating could only have been worse if EVERY table were clustered around the back end of a cash register, and not only my table. Or if the chairs were constantly wobbling, and not just the table. Frankly, I guess there's many ways it could have been worse, so we'll move on. I ordered the Spartan Burrito, named after Local Sports Team, and received a soggy tortilla loosely wrapped around hunks of meat and covered with a lightly spicy paste. Cutting into it resembled nothing so much as disemboweling an animal that had just washed up from the shore of the Cedar River. It was somewhat palatable. I had ordered a Fanta, as well, assuming that I would get a sparkling orange beverage. Instead, I got a crusty little tortilla with shredded meat and probably some other things that I didn't pay attention to. They did not have the drink, Fanta. But I was offered Crush soda after discussing this miscommunication with the staff. And, oh, the staff was lovely. I was greeted at the door by a charming fellow who held that door open while I kicked the snow off my boots. He readily gave me a discount for this snarky review, and gave me a $5 discount card for my next visit. The workers were the single best thing about this restaurant, and overall my strongest wish is that they find a better restaurant to work at. I'd be glad to eat there. read more

I've eaten here once and loved it. As a diabetic, I'm delighted to use the buffet to make a big salad (no rice, beans, or tortillas) and have something filling, tasty, and low on the glycemic index. Finally got around to Frida's in Solon. Service was very good. Within 5 minutes of sitting down the waitress took our drink order and left us some chips and salsa. I ordered the Tacos de Carnitas and was not disappointed. It was off the supper menu so it came with rice and beans. I asked for 'no beans' so I got quite a lot of rice instead and the rice was pretty tasty. The tacos were very flavorful and you add your own cilantro and onions which were on a large plate with the 3 tacos. The only negative for me was since I always order draft beer when it's on the menu, I ordered a draft Negra Modelo which was clearly on the menu. The waitress came back a few minutes later and said they only had it in bottles. Since I'm a bit of a beer snob, I took a pass. Overall a good experience. read more

This review is for the service and the margaritas. I went there and met a friend. Asked for a drink that was fresh and not from their bucket, was brought one from bucket. Ordered another this time so a premium which comes with extra shot. I didnt want shot so i said regular. But strawberry. Took 2 sips and was over it. Went on to have 2 beer instead. I told him the margarita was disgusting and he. Could take it back. When i got bill i was charged for premium one anyways. But hey did give me 10% off. The first time I went, they were spunky and fresh. Now they can hardly deign to wait on us, even tho were were the only ones there at 1 pm on a Saturday. The buffet was dark, dry and not attractive food. The chips had a acid taste, not crispy, but stale. The chicken enchilada with mole and the pork taco was good too. For Iowa, this is good Mexican food. The staff is attentive and helpful, and I love the Frida Kahlo theme. They have excellent chicken tenders and fries for my kids, which is great so we can all eat something we like. They were helpful with my gluten-intolerant mother-in-law. I don't think we will be back. We were one of 2 tables in the entire room on the 'music' side. When we arrived we were asked if we wanted that side which had it's own menu and we could still order from the main menu on which she handed us one menu for 3 people. We then ordered cocktails which took over 10 min. to arrive one at a time! We then ordered 2 appetizers which arrived separately over 15 min. later without serving plates. Our main entrees each arrived separately, each arriving 5 min. apart after (one being taken around to the other table by the cook before being given to us!) One was fajitas that I had to flag her down to ask for the tortilla shells that should have been served with it. The response I received was "oh yeah, that comes with that doesn't it" I was a waitress in college and 2 tables is not that challenging, especially on a slow late afternoon! Another table arrived and the waitress started the same 'one at a time' serving with them! Oh boy! Their food was very bland as well-I don't care for too spicy either but this was beyond blah..
