I had a lot of fun at Friar Tuck last week. The karaoke machine was broken, but the whole bar sang the parts that the karaoke machine decided to conk out on. They had 6 dollar half pitchers which was AWESOME.... They have a popcorn machine in the corner so you can keep refilling your basket (we did 8 times) The only thing preventing me from giving this place 5 stars is the smell. It literally smelled like every patron had urinated on the floor for the past 5 years. Other than the stench, it was awesome! read more

Its crowded, loud, dirty, smells like stale beer, the bathrooms tiny, and the bartenders are surly, that being said this place kicks ass. Its a bar full of unpretentious people having a good time and enjoying themselves in a sea of poser bars and restaurants. They have 3 beers on tap, Bud, Bud Light, and Amber Bock for the classy types. The ski lodge decor and 70's wood paneling add to the magic, ohh and the best door in all of Chicago. So yeah its a bit frattastic and could get dropped off in virtually any college area and fit in but ohh well. Drop by for the fun. read more

I haven't been to Friar Tucks in a little while but it's one of my favorite Lakeview bars. The staff have always been great, tons of cheap drinks, and a warm, tavern-esque decor. Definitely a tavern feel, not a lakeview/wrigleyville "irish pub" feel. There's some free popcorn around if you need simple snack, they have cubs games on but it's not the kind of place where you have flat screens yelling at you from all angles, and the patrons are usually nice variety of non-douche. From my experience, you can go to this place and have long conversations with old friends and/or you can just get a little tipsy and laugh with everyone at the bar. read more

I love this place! It is a great bar for everyone. Yes, it is a dive bar. But it is everything a dive bar should be. A little dirty, a little uncertain, a lot of characters, and a lot of fun! You will never have boring night here and you will be certain to have tons of fun stories for the next day! The staff and bartenders are always fun. Come when it is less crowded and get to know them. I was a regular in this joint before most posting here were even born. You have NO IDEA how this place used to rock. Angelo (the owner) would put out shots and buy rounds non-stop. On the back wall are photos from the 70's.....check them out as they show the fun we really had. Friars was the king of the hill in our book until about 1979....then OJ's opened down on Lehman Ct. It was run by 2 regulars from Friars, and it took over where Friars left off. Colorful characters like Round Bob, Black Mike, Rock, Marco, The Duke, Wong, Bambino, Six Pack Cath, Chubs, Chinook, Rockets, and the infamous WSBO's, made this the greatest. I've been to this bar twice now, once on a Saturday night with a large group of people and then on a Friday night with a slightly smaller group of people and both times were a lot of fun. I had been by this place numerous times on foot or bus and was surprised when I walked in. It is fairly small but plenty of seating and even a small dance floor. It was 'fun hat Friday' the last time I was there but I didn't partake, I didn't like the idea of putting something on my head when I didn't know who or how many people also had it on their head. Drinks are fairly inexpensive. They have mini pitchers of draft beer for only $5 which equal to 2 pints which will save you a dollar or two. The only downside I saw was the jukebox was really loud so if you were there to carry on a conversation w/o yelling, you're out of luck. If you are there for a party for someone in particular (birthday, going away, etc), tell the bartender or server why you are there and they will give that person a shot which is from a sheep's butt! (They stick the shot glass in the butt region of a blow-up sheep.) read more

I love this crazy little dive bar!! Not too fancy but exactly what it appears to be, a hole-in-the wall gem with a great and fun staff, good priced drinks and the best Karaoke crowd in Chicago. The regulars make you feel at home even if you can't hold a note and they are so diverse that anyone could fit and feel comfortable!! The bar tenders are on their game and the best I've seen, they don't pressure you for another drink when your not finished with the one you have, but the second you're ready you never have to flag them down. read more

Oh, Friar Tuck. I've been going here for years since my brother-in-law-to-be (whew! that takes so long to write!) works here on Sundays. It's a great dive bar, with cheap drinks for the neighborhood and a fantastic crowd that I've become friends with over the years. The popcorn is free. There are a couple of fun arcade-style video game machines. There is always something to amuse me when I'm forced to stick around for whatever all-day sporting event is going on (and frequently the owner makes free food for said sporting events, which is awesome :) ). used to be sort of a regular there.that place was very close to where i lived.kick ass place if you're into lakeview dive bars. crowd can be very different.they had those mini-pitchers there for $5.amber rock was my fav.bartenders are overall friendly.drinks had never been watered down there. i was never big into karaoke but some people took it really seriously and it was fun watching.and yes....they don't have those cubs fans yelling their guts out all the time.it is cash only but still not worth deducting a star.i would still go back there sometime if i will be around in the neighborhood. perfect place to hang out during winter time.especially if you live close. read more

This is a great place to go if you're looking for a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. We went there on a Sunday to watch the Bears game. There was free food, the bartender was super welcoming, even though it was obvious we were newbies in a bar full of regulars. I started going to "Friars" (as we called it, way back in the old days of 1974 when Angelo first started running the place. I knew all the guys (and ladies) there, and it was still to this day, one of the best bars ever. Angelo always sponsored our teams and we would drink there every night after our games at parks like Hamlin, Clarendon and Wells. The place was a party every night and we sure went nuts. If you look at the walls, there are still photos of us in our prime from back in 19734-1978 when we were in our twenties !! Once OJ's opened, we left Friars a bit, but still returned from time to time. I had opportunity to visit again about a year ago. The joint looks the same (the overhead portion of the bar is gone in some spots), but the crowd has changed a bit. The place was really one of the straight bars in the area, and still is .....but to much less of a degree. Friars will always be one of my all time favorite bars !! read more
