This is an haunt, and my latest visit was part of the I Love Dive Bars bar crawl for the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce. The bar is in the center of the space with seating all around it (with other tables to the side - and a fireplace too). Fun atmosphere - divey but warm if that makes sense! Service was ok. Bad ugly ass dive bars are the place to go if you like it sloppy and dirty. Friar Tuck has been serving cheap drinks for more than 50 years if you can believe it. If you're into medieval stuff, for sure you'll like the entrance of the bar, but it actually doesn't have much of an Olde English theme. Good alternative to the expensive fancy ass joints a few streets over from here. They're also known for bad singers at karaoke. About the most interesting thing about this bar is the entrance. It looks like a big ass barrel, which caught my attention the first time I was around here. The name of the bar implies some kind of Robin Hood theme, but this just looks a lot like a regular dive bar inside. A difference is the bar is in the middle of the floor. They have some cheap ass specials. Specials include this money saver that's buy one and get another for only a buck. This is typically on weekdays. It's about $7 for most drinks. With the special that's quite a steal. Good prices but beer selection is limited. There's only a few on draft, so get some hard stuff. Good fun. It's also a popular place for karaoke. So disgusting. The lady hosting Bingo came up to my table and ABRUPTLY crossed off one of my friends's cards because she hadn't met the "2 drink requirement" to participate in Bingo. Might be my new favorite bar in Chicago. Our aunt recommended this spot as she used to go here in her twenties. Sounds like it hasn't changed at all...still amazing. It's on the Northside and you might miss it if walking down the street. As soon as you walk in though you know it's a great spot. Angelo the owner greeted us and treated us like family. He made some great popcorn and even bought us a shot of Jameson. Other locals that stopped in treated you like regulars and offered snacks and info on the neighborhood. Hands down best dive bar on Broadway! It's dark and cozy inside... Come sit by the fireplace are belly up to the bar, the bartenders are great! Free popcorn is usually popping, grab a basket or two by the front entrance. This place attracts a lovely and eclectic mix of people! If it's your birthday let them know and they will treat you to a free shot... Only catch is you have to drink it out of a bloe up goat's butt! So fun and hilarious! We got there right when they opened and were greeted by Angelo (owner) with a smile and a basket of popcorn. He and the bartender were some of the nicest genuine people I have met. Terrible dive bar. I took my friends out last night for one of our friends birthday. The short ( wide body figure) bartender with bleached blonde hair caught a nasty attitude when I asked for a Long Island ice tea, she said she doesn't want to make a drink. She is a bartender at an establishment. How lazy can you be? so my buddy said oh bartenders on broadway ave don't know how to make cocktails, his voice was casual. I came last night with a couple of friends around 10-11pm. The bartender was a life saver. A man came in with face tattoos and tried to sit with me and my friends. The bartender immediately noticed and caught the attention of the man. First asking him to come up to the bar and order something (the man just ordered water) and then after the man sat back down at our table, the bartender came out from behind the bar, approached the man and told him he knew that he didn't know us and he had to go. The man with the face tatts tried to say he was our friend, even looking at my friend and trying to be buddy buddy, but we all clearly looked confused. While visiting a friend a couple months back, we popped into friar tuck during a karaoke night. This wasn't just any karaoke night. On this particular night, if you sang a song that referenced the song that referenced 'fire,' you would be treated to TWO shots of fireball at the bar. To my knowledge, there wasn't a limit on the number of songs that you could sing where this would apply. Because I value the health of my liver and didn't want to hate myself any more than normal, I kept it to one song, and as a result, only two shots of Fireball. Nothing good happens after more than two shots of Fireball. The bar was filled with all walks of life and was definitely a solid dive. The staff was friendly and were quick to offer refills on our drinks. The clientele were all friendly too and it definitely felt like a place where you could end up making lots of new friends. All in all, I would definitely pop back in (especially on karaoke night) and see where the night took me. read more

I came here a few months back with a friend and was met by an incredibly rude bartender but I didn't ask her name. I was so appalled by her customer service, we left immediately. I came here again last night with friends and again, was served by this same woman. We asked her if we could take a shot out of the sheep because it was a friends birthday and she snapped on us saying it was broken and no one can take a shot from it. We tried to exchange friendly banter but was scolded at because "there was nothing she can do." This time I did get her name which was Kim. While I understand that the bar work place is very chaotic and overwhelming, please don't forget you still need to treat humans like humans. We were having a great time when the manager Kim decided to verbally attack my group letting us know that within the last 8 min we were here, it's supposed to be "customary" to buy more than one drink when we all purchased jell-o shots immediately upon walking in and were planning on buying more. While you might see many "merry men" in this dive of a bar- I kept wanting to know why this place was called Friar Tucks. There was certainly nothing English about the place, although I did think the big barrel entry way was kind of "kitschy". I went on a recent Thursday night where karaoke night was in full swing. I was not sure what to make of that whole thing- the song book was old and tattered, the space in the corner to sing cramped, but they did have my karaoke "signature song" and people were there having fun. Obviously there were many regulars there as they cheered on their neighborhood favorites. What makes this a dive bar? Let's just say that I doubt the place has been cleaned in a very long time. The floor is sticky, the bar is sticky, the stools are not only sticky but wobbley. Only one toilet worked in the ladies room and by the end of the night no toilets worked. All the things you'd expect in a dive bar. My expectations were met. The bar takes up most of the place and it is manned by some pretty good bartenders. Don't even think you can get a drink here if you are underage- EVERYONE is carded. One final hint? Bring cash. Cuz just like the "merry men" in Sherwood Forest, this place only takes cash -so leave your plastic, pence, pounds and shillings at home! read more

Call me crazy but I think I like this place. I am so not into "bar" bars. Whatever that means but I really dug Friar Tucks. You walk in and everyone just greets you so warmly and this was my first visit there. The bartender carded me as he did everyone else but he started calling me by my name which I loved. He asked my husband if he preferred to be called by Rich or Richard. Love that! They seem like they really want their customers to have a good experience and feel welcomed. The bar is pretty small but cozy. The have free popcorn..extra points for that! Board games like Jenga and Trivial Pursuit and also Chess....zzzz. Okay, I'm just not a Chess player. The bar has a few video games a juke box and several tvs. I just love it. This place could easily become my neighborhood "hang". We actually went in to check out the karaoke but by the time we left at 9:30ish it still hadn't started. Yes, I said 9:30...it's a school night people! Not that I go to school but you know what I mean. Dive bar, ahoy! I love crappy joints and this place has been crappy and great since 1970. I was pleased to see that it wasn't grimy, and didn't smell like stale beer. They have karaoke on Thursdays - but the discs they have seem to be weird versions of songs, not the one you may recognize. It got pretty busy later on, with a lively crowd. Love the free nail files emblazoned with the oldskool logo. Free popcorn is always a nice touch as well. The woman behind the bar was slightly unfriendly and inattentive, but the drinks are strong and cheap. Sexiest bouncer in town, as well. read more

A friend of mine comes here quite often and has been trying to get me to come, but it just never appealed to me. Once I walked in I looked around and it looked exactly how I thought it would look. Holiday lights all over the place and the fact that it was a dive. Our waitress was funny and nice and made sure we got out $3 Shiners.
