We stopped at Freya's for the gelato, though they also offer crepes and wine. The inside is cozy and welcoming, and the outdoor patio overlooks the harbor. We were greeted promptly and our questions answered. I ordered rooibos chai and salted caramel, and my partner had salted caramel. The gelato was good, and the outdoor patio was fabulous.

Soooo... our youngest (read as most spoiled haha) daughter is named Freya. So, when my wife heard about this ice cream shop with the same name, what choice did we have really? Well, the only choice was to hop in the car two days later and head almost two hours north for gelato! Now, this was our first trip to Rockport, so forgive me while I take a second to gush over how gorgeous the small town is. A gorgeous harbor filled with boats, amazing architecture overlooking said harbor, and amazing walking paths all seeming to lead right to the water. We immediately started looking at properties for sale on Zillow! I lay this out simply to mention that Freya's is positioned right in the perfect spot! See the pictures, but the view from the attached porch are breathtaking, and the building is steps from the walking paths. Not to mention the industrial brick building that I wouldn't be surprised to learn it served as a cannery at some point. Location, perfect. Food though? Equally amazing. Delicious choices, great variety, and the prices are downright cheap for what you receive, and where you get to enjoy your gelato (or crepe, I will definitely be back for a crepe!!). And the owner? She was amazing. I feel bad I didn't get her name, but she was so accommodating, kind, and definitely hard working (she was doing it all herself!). She was excited about our Freya being there to enjoy her Freya's gelato. It was truly a magical moment, one our daughter will remember forever. And with how often we intend to be back, the memories at Freya's are just getting started. I cannot say enough about this place. If perfection exists in this world, it is at Freya's. You cannot convince me otherwise.

    Delicious cold brew gelato

I've had gelato all through Italy and this is the first place in America that has rivaled the Italian gelato shops in quality. I got the cold brew gelato and it was SPECTACULAR. The guy behind the counter explained the process, which sounded very convoluted and impressive, but to be honest I wasn't listening because I was too distracted by how good the cold brew gelato was!

    Gelato and sorbetto

Today my husband and I took our yearly day trip to mid coast Maine. After shopping, eating and beaching through Belfast, Lincolnville and Camden, we decided to venture just a little further south to Rockport, which we had never really explored before. I had been looking for a niche unique ice cream place online and Freya's stood out to me immediately, both the pictures and the reviews! And wow, this place is a gem! Freya's is tucked into a quaint corner of Rockport. We walked in and the gentleman behind the counter was very sweet and helpful, answering questions and offering many samples! The atmosphere is lovely, especially the jazz music wafting out onto the quiet street when we walked in, not to mention the bubble machine sending bubbles around the windows outside. The decor and seating are also very nice. We ended up getting the chai chocolate spice gelato and a citrus (can't remember if orange or lemon) rosemary sorbetto. The gelato was creamy; the chocolate was rich but not cloyingly sweet, and the chai spice warmed the back of my mouth nicely. The sorbetto was so refreshing; the flavors were so well balanced and complex. I also tried the blueberry basil sorbetto and that was delicious as well. The price was very reasonable. But what was truly priceless was the gorgeous view on their balcony seating area, it overlooks the marina. It felt like we were in a slice of life movie. With couples walking their dogs on the road beneath us, boats bobbing in the harbor, and don't even make me mention the sea breeze. The gelato and sorbetto are the best I have ever had. I will be back. I definitely recommend!

It was ok but it did not impress me. Though the food was mostly good and the space was nice, the…read moremenu was rather limiting, the dishes had flaws, and the service was a bit off with regard to timing. I had a Black Manhattan cocktail, supposedly differing from an ordinary Manhattan by use of a different kind of bitters (Amaro) and "filthy cherries." These seemed like basic good quality maraschinos to me (3); nothing "filthy" about them. Nevertheless it was good, fruity, and ample strength. The appetizer selection was small and heavy on bread-based items. (No free table bread was available - grrrr.) Most didn't appeal but the Roasted Garlic did, served with bread (2 kinds: a toasted crostini and a fresh crusty sourdough). The garlic was a whole head, sliced open for easy access and presented on a very hot plate, sweet and mellow from long slow roasting, and served with a choice of cheeses (molten blue, brie, whipped feta, or chèvre) - I chose chèvre and it was very good and a generous portion. A very simple dish not often encountered in restaurants. In retrospect this was the best part of the meal. I felt a little rushed at times and impatient at other times. It took a very long time to get the appetizer so I had nothing to dilute the effects of the strong cocktail. But then more than once I was asked about my entree before I was ready; once when ordering the appetizer and another time soon after I received it and hadn't made up my mind yet. I held my ground and told them I wasn't quite ready, and they accepted that and I took my time eating. There was an eclectic selection of wines by the glass. I had an interesting rosé from Slovenia. My entree was a roasted fish filet (halibut I think? It's no longer listed on the menu) served over a tomato-based sauce. This sauce was richly scented and complex and the plate was attractively garnished with micro greens. But the fish was on the small side and the flavor was monotonous - no discernible browning on the top. The other component, probably an herby cucumber-yogurt sauce resembling raita, which should have been a cool complement to the hot tomato broth, instead was melting unattractively and dispersing into it. Perhaps most disappointing, there was nothing else to this dish. It needed a starch or something (rice, boiled potatoes, or even more of those very good breads from the appetizer - wish I had saved some.) So it's good I got the appetizer first, or I would have left rather hungry. Desserts were also very limited and most didn't appeal. I decided on the Clafouti, which is a baked tart, thicker and heavier than flan, with fruit (black cherries) It was way too hot, didn't have enough fruit, and ice cream would be a far better choice than the amorphous blob of whipped cream it was served with. I should have skipped dessert. It was so boring. As for ambience: it's a crowded, noisy place but in a pleasing way. Very small, and I had reserved one of the 6 seats at the bar (I was dining solo). It's whimsically decorated, like with the grape-covered nude statue holding a candle. There was attractive artwork on the walls, some of which I believe was for sale. I did detect smoky odors coming from the kitchen that other reviewers have noted but I consider that a positive thing, not a negative. So come here if you wish. Check it out and form your own opinion. As for me, I wasn't sufficiently impressed and wouldn't return.
