Growfood Carolina - Ramen from Food Film Festival

This is a review solely for the Food Film Festival that was held at Growfood. They're planning to…read moremake it an annual event and I'd highly recommend attending the next one! I went with a couple of friends and we had the best time. It was a great event at a great venue. How many times have you watched a film (for me, it's the tv show Top Chef) and saw something that looked incredibly tasty and wished you could sample it? The idea of the Food Film Festival was born from that very desire. I went to Friday night's event which was called Edible Adventure #007: International Meal of Mystery. Some of the offerings weren't necessarily international per se (there were some films/food from Chicago and Canada) but we'll let that slide because honestly who cares when you're stuffing your face? For the price of a ticket (with a discount code it was $45), we got to watch about 8 short films (ranging from 45 seconds to around 12 minutes), beer and/or wine and a plethora of different foods to sample. While you're watching these films, there will come a pivotal time where you'll say to yourself "wow, that looks great. I wonder what that tastes like." And then, right on cue, out comes the food and you get to taste the very food you're watching on the screen. We enjoyed pretty much everything we were offered, from the savory pocket pies to the amazing doughnuts, all of which were either prepared on site or flown in overnight, with a lot of the food being served by the same people featured in these films. The big showstopper meal of the night was the ramen that was made by the star of the documentary, Ramen Dreams. This was real authentic ramen made by a ramen master flown in from Japan. This is not the $1 ramen that got us through our college years. It looked amazing and tasted even better! I missed out on going to Saturday night's event but if it was anything like Friday night's, I'm sure it was just as great. These unique kinds of events is what makes us so fortunate to be living in a place like Charleston. I thought it was such a fun experience and can't wait to see what they'll bring us next year!

OMG what took me so long to discover this place! El Molino supermarket on Rivers Avenue is the…read moreultimate Hispanic market. It has an incredible bakery section, an ice cream and dessert area, and one very large eatery with two sections depending on what type of food you want. Everything in the eatery is authentically cooked and prepared with the freshest of ingredients. I couldn't resist ordering the fish tacos. They only sell in 3s; however, all the other tacos you can buy just one. My fish was grilled to perfection and well seasoned with a cilantro salsa, cheese, lettuce, fresh tomatoes and lime wedges. Yummy! It also came with a spicy crema, which is absolutely amazing. The heat held on with a slight burn at the end. The bakery section was filled with incredible pastries and cakes and sweet breads, donuts,Flans, churros... you name it, they've got it. They also have a full produce are with fresh fruit and vegetables and great prices. The butcher area was filled with a variety of meats for any style of cooking. Their spice aisle was amazing! So many things to choose from. I think we spent at least a couple of hours here just exploring the store, enjoying the food and loving the atmosphere with upbeat Latina/Hispanic music. Everything was clean, organized and well displayed. Service was amazing with friendly faces and smiles. It's my new favorite place to shop and enjoy a meal. Great place for families!
