Pay the extra $0.75 for the Ms Vickies extra crispy batter. It's worth it, trust me. I've tried the haddock and the cod and prefer the haddock. As stated by the man taking my order, the cod has more of a fishy taste. The haddock is also their most popular choice. I've tried the Chili (both meat and vegetarian) and it's good comfort food. The order is quite filling and could potentially be split between two. I can finish the fish easy but always have a difficult time eating all the fries. I was wearing a Moroccan hat, and then it disappeared, I was like, "where'd my Fez-go?" Well, it came here, to try some Poutine. I don't see eye to eye with a lot of Toronto reviewers. Not on this place anyway. I'm spoiled by Quebec Poutine and English and Belgian Chips, maybe? I don't know. I don't like writing negative reviews, and I'd never give a little family owned place less than a 3 unless I was forced to at gunpoint (which would be hot), but I so, so didn't enjoy the Poutine. It tasted nothing like Poutine from Quebec, which is fine if it's delicious anyway, but I found it bland and somewhat off. In fact I probably ate less than a quarter of it. And if you factor in that it wasn't cheap, you're left with a 3 star rating. The fries themselves were just okay, gravy did not have that smooth taste I loved, and cheese curds weren't the perfect squeaky kind you find up in QC. You can get good Poutine outside Quebec (Allen St Poutine in Buffalo, and a few in Ottawa, and NYC even), but I've yet to find an excellent one in Toronto. Also, while the decor is amazing (think: The Beatles and England) and the locale is fantastic (right in the heart of the Kensington outdoor Market, perfect for people watching), the wait time was so long that the unappealing final product was even more disappointing. Personally one of the best fish and chips places in Toronto for me. I'm slightly addicted? I usually get the haddock or halibut, but wanted to try something else and opted for the shrimp today. Like their fish, the fried shrimp was oh so delish! The batter, which is part of why I love this place, is sooooo flaky and light. Doesn't feel heavy or oily at all. Size of the shrimp was also pretty substantial. Nowhere does it say so, but it's what I'd call "jumbo". The whole thing is fried to perfection, crispy outside batter paired with plump and succulent shrimp. I dip it in their tartar sauce like I would fish, but that's just my typical irresistible urge to dunk fried foods sauces. Now onto the "chips". Their regular hand cut fries are pretty decent, but I usually substitute for sweet potato fries. Again, super light and crispy outside, then soft inside, paired with chipotle mayo. (I've also tried their onion rings, which became my one and only, however tiny, disappointment with Freso's. It's breaded not battered. For a place that has perfect fish batter, they breaded their onion rings... sigh) Overall though, this place is a winner. Massive portions. Super chill environment, oldies music, excellent service. JT came to play here after tweeting the news in his childhood jammies, then followed by the most halfhearted thank you note for Isles fans on Twitter - this after months of "I love this team, I want a future here" and requests not to be traded. Then my poutine arrived. So an important note about Poutine - you can never ever get it the way they do it in Quebec - They throw their poutines together with the flamboyance of a French Canadian suicide, that is, really hot fries, copious amounts of thin flavorful gravy, and fresh cheese curds. As my Montreal friend would've said it - you don't eat poutine, you were facebanged by one. The version at Fresco's? It was good by Torontonian standards (lots of fries, decent gravy, and okay curds) and decent by Montreal standards, but any tabarnak manning the kitchen at any Quebec casse-croute will look at that and sneer. "Ze curds weren't squeaking, were zhey". Oh shit. Leafs scored an equalizer OH WAIT IT'S OFFSIDES, GOAL REVERSED. The cod and shrimp arrived with the fries, and my missus sprinkled it with malt vinegar. It's not the usual English chippie breading, but it's still crispy and decently fresh, no weird off-flavors in the frying oil, and the fries are good (mealy inside, crispy outside) OH WOW Isles up 3-2 and everyone on the line touched that pass. The shrimp was plump and not too breaded as that's a pet peeve of mine, but this one looks like a 16-20 with a good batter, fresh and delicious with the tartar sauce. Me and the missus polished off the seafood and killed off the Poutine, and we are now happy and satisfied with supper. Oh, look, Isles are up 4-1 at the end of the 2nd period. I stood up, shook the owner's hand, wished his team good luck (I expect the Isles to have a late 1st round/early 2nd round playoffs exit this year while the Leafs can go all the way, hopefully against Nashville or San Jose. We had some very nice banter about how the Isles managed to stay alive even without JT. Yeah, Canadians are nice. They didn't murder us on the 403 despite their space cadet driving skills, and they were nice enough to show us a game where the Isles absolutely trashed the home team (final score, 6-1). Why haven't I tried this place earlier?? It was excellent! I LOVE that they have all kinds of alternative choices if you don't want fries/chips. I had the haddock and fried mushrooms, turns out you get mushrooms AND some fries as well. The food wasn't too greasy considering it was all fried. It comes in a little box with some printed paper. I asked them to sub regular fries with sweet potato fries on both orders and they didn't, and because it was food delivery, I couldn't just bring it back. I figured that since there was nothing I could do at this point, I'll just make do. I was impressed by the portion sizes and how fresh the cod was. The taste of the cod was just alright and I think it was because of how greasy it was that really detracted from the taste. The fries weren't bad and weren't too salty, which was nice. The coleslaw was also flavorful. I shrimp in the sandwich was fresh but the taste was nothing too spectacular. This place is uber delish! All the comments were bang on, had the lobster po boy AND cod fish & chips. Yes that's 2 meals for just one person but couldn't just pick one! The cod had been battered in both styles, one regular and other extra crispy (they're cool like that there). Loved the mild-medium spicy mayo zip on the po boy, the fresh cut fries are legit and still taste really good after they're cold. Better fries than many chip trucks found up north to camping trips! Me and my husband found this spot on a top 10 fish and chips in Toronto list. It did not disappoint! The owner was so sweet let us try haddock one with Mrs Vickie's chips crushed as batter and one normal. Oh my god! The Mrs Vickie's was to die for, so crispy, but left the fish still moist! We will return on our next visit to Canada! read more
