I really wanted to like Roger and his bike shop. I went out of my way to support a small, local business instead of the large chain bike shop. He special ordered tires for me and told me how much it would be to install them. I got a message that the tires were in and headed off to the shop with my bike. I should have clarified when I would be in with my bike- mistake #1. When I arrived, I was told it was a ten day wait. Fine, that was my mistake. I can wait. Mistake #2 I didn't thoroughly clean my bike before taking it to him. I'm busy. I barely have time to ride let alone detail it with my toothbrush. I did knock the worst of it off and figured it wasn't too bad. Wrong. I apologized for how dirty my bike was from trail riding. He told me "you're right, take it home and clean it." Done. But first I took myself to the big name bike store, bought my new tires and tubes, and proceeded to use YouTube to figure out how to change them myself. Thank you, roger for giving me the motivation and confidence to do it myself. Turns out it was a 20 min job that I was more than capable of. I'm also in the market for a new bike so there's another sale lost. I'll happily go out of my way to avoid this shop. On a side note, I had my toddler with me and unloaded/loaded the bike with one arm. It was not a small feat but doable. Roger never offered to help in any way. (Not that I ever expected him to.) At the big name shop, the clerk offered to carry the tires out to my car for me- totally unnecessary but a kind gesture that spoke volumes. read more

I flew in from California and needed a tune-up before heading out on a long bike trip. Every other place I called was backed up for several days, but Roger was able to take care of my bike in a day! Bike shopping for our 8-year-old daughter recently, we were smart to stop here last. We visited a big box sporting goods store, and three other independent bike shops. Shopping at Freewheelers was vastly more pleasurable, informative, safer, and by far the best value. Roger, the owner/mechanic, got her fit properly on the bike she liked best, then let us ride for as long as we wanted to be certain. He even loaned me (dad) a bike so I could keep up with her on the neighborhood test ride. IMPORTANT: Roger sells his kid bikes at or below cost as a political statement, to keep people from wasting their money on junk bicycles at big box stores, and to keep the kids safer. Because new bikes are machine built in Asia, Roger disassembles all new bikes, repacks the bearings, and hand tightens them to spec. He also gives FREE lifetime tune-ups on bikes you buy there. These two extras are HUGE -- plus we saved $100 over what the other shops were selling the same Fuji bike for. We'll be back again, and HIGHLY recommend this shop for both kids and adults. read more

Terrible service, the old man with a beard was rude and unhelpful. I just needed a new tube put in which is a 5 minute job and he said he had 6 bikes ahead of me. He would not lend me the simple plastic tool to do it myself and he would not pump up my tires for me which most bike shops like burts or park ave let customers do for free. Burts and park ave will also lend you tools and allow you to work on your bike in the store. When I asked if I could do it in the store he said no. Do not give this store your business. I would give zero stars if I could read more

Just needed my bicycle tire pump, and told the guy I would pay for the service, The guy instead try to push a sale on me. he said I got the wrong valve stem and I told them it came with the bike and just needed Air, and he still insisted and tries to sell me a new tube and adapters and . Won't be getting any recommendation or future business frim me for sure. i'll go to Bert's bike instead. read more

We have purchased two Fuji bikes from Freewheelers and have been extremely happy with both. Roger Levy, the owner and only employee, is a character and a half! He is quite an intelligent fellow and will chat ad naseum about nearly any topic. My husband is extremely fit and had one set of needs, I am a full-figured gal, and had another. Roger was able to address and manage our situations equally well. (He cracked me up when he told my muscular husband that he has wide hips. "Wide hips? Are you kidding me?" was my husband's response. Still brings a smile to my face!) As other reviewers have mentioned, Roger allows you to ride the bike around the neighborhood as long as you'd like. He also provided free tune-ups for the life of the bicycle. My neighbor purchased a bike from Freewheelers and the following year was in a pretty bad bike accident. She cracked a few teeth, had several severe scrapes on her face, and broke her thumb. As you can imagine, the bike was also in very sad shape. Roger displayed a tremendous amount of compassion: fixing her bike at a deeply discounted price. He wanted to help encourage her to get back on the bike; to eliminate any PTS associated with the accident. It's always good to support locally owned businesses. It's even better when that business provided superior products and services. He has a passion for cycling and truly enriches the Rochester bike scene. read more

Don't go here if you are looking for friendly service. I've gone three different occasions for small things and my business was turned away because it wasn't worth it for him. On all three occasions the shop was completely empty mind you... Example one: Bike light, he would not even help me choose a light for my bike!!! At first I thought he was just being racist but I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. Example two: wanted to buy a rack for my bike and wanted help installing it. He said he would sell me the rack but wouldn't install it because he has too much stuff to do and that its not that hard... I had ridden there on my bike so he was telling me to lug this thing back on my bike and figure it out on my own instead of doing a 5 minute install. Yeah thanks for nothing! Example three: I had an old schwinn that needed a tune up. I was turned away because it wasn't worth it for him to do tune ups. This guy is an ass, there are plenty of FRIENDLY bike shops in Rochester that are better than this one. He's also a freak with some really leftist views and looks like the Ted Kaczynskii. I'm all for people with different views and diversity but I was a little afraid to be in the shop alone with him. I won't be going back to say the least... read more

I came here a bunch of times while I was going to RIT. If you haven't been here before, let me preface my review by saying that this shop is a little weird. The owner is really down to earth, don't get me wrong, but he's definitely a free spirit. He doesn't have the internet, and is, what I would call a technophobe. Very old school, and never in a hurry. He's more than happy to talk to you about anything under the sun, it's easy to get wrapped up in a conversation and spend a couple hours of here. He has a lot of cool stories about cycling and life in general. There are some cool NOS parts scattered throughout the store and prices are more than reasonable. A lot of cool gear for people restoring vintage road bikes and wanting to maintain that period look. Service is fair, with average prices. I will say that I had a wheel set laced up here that wasn't entirely perfect, (valve hole wasn't in the right position, common error). While the wheel has held up through four years of abuse and city riding, it is kind of annoying when I need to add some air to the tires. Overall, I would say that Freewheelers is a good shop, not the best or most up to date, but I'll definitely come back, even if only for the conversation. read more

This bike shop was awesome!!! I am biking across the country for charity with a group of 25 young adults. We called ahead to say that we would be showing up with 7 bikes that we're having problems and the bike shop said they could see us in 10 minutes. We got there and the two mechanics were incredibly friendly. They asked about our problems one by one and quickly addressed each one. They gave one guy a new quick release because his was bent and he gave me a new limit screw. At the end of the repairs we asked how much we owed, and they said nothing! They repaired 7 bikes + new parts completely for free! He said any repair under 10 minutes is free and then we continued to talk for a good while about the cause and biking. Roger is knowledgeable, gives great service and all the time you need to select your bike. I love shopping here and have bought two great bikes -- one pink one for me and a black one for my husband. Freewheelers takes care of you! I came in with a bent wheel, remnant from an accident earlier in the day. The owner and I both thought it was unfix-able at first, but he did it! My bike rides as good as new and he didn't charge me a cent! He said it's his policy to take care of those that have been in accidents. I bought a bike from Roger in 1992 and it held up great for until I crashed into a car last year 2010. He does great work, is a great conversationalist and he tears apart all new bikes and re-assembles them with great care making sure the parts are properly lubed and tightened from the get-go. I bought a new Fuji from him last year after the crash and it also has been a great bike. As is my son-in-laws bike purchased 3 years ago. Roger has gone thru some major health issues of which most people are probably unaware but he loves bikes and his work. It's hard to be impartial in a review like this once you get to really know him. He makes it his business to get to know his customers on a personal level, unlike the typical bike shop. I highly recommend his work and if you give him a chance you will not regret it. He's not perfect but who of us are? There have been some unfair and untrue postings about him on the web and I hope I have corrected some of those wrongs. Dave read more
