STAY AWAY!!! See a listing of VA State violations -…read morehttps://www.dss.virginia.gov/facility/search/cc2.cgi?rm=Details;ID=42063 Additionally....Our one one-year old attended this "hidden gem" (as one fake review suggested on Yelp) for about 5 weeks. Big mistake! We had the benefit of dropping her off and picking up at times not when all things were "dressed up" to cover the chaos and unprofessionalism. It goes like this: 1) the two owners, Ann Chu (Korean origin) and Anna Corley are young women that never had children or degrees in child development or Education. Anna Corley managed to graduate from the #1 party school in Florida. Miss Chu finishes a degree in Arts. See their biographies on their site and think about it hard before even going for interview with that establishment. 2) their website boasts Spanish as the second language. Wrong - it is the first language, because they hire Spanish-speaking workers (because they are cheap) and in fact many of them cannot speak ANY English. I am sure you can use sign language to communicate with them if you want. 3) their main child care giver was a pathologist (hopefully not for dead people) prior to joining their outfit from Puerto Rico. Want to read more? 4) our daughter's bruises were unexplained (of course, every child gets bruises). Mis Chu will convince you that it is normal (with a smile on her face). She thinks she is a doctor, forgot to tell you. 5) our daughter's water bottle always came nice and full every day. Children don't need to drink water if they don't want to. Again - talk to Miss Chu. She will tell you everything you need to know about your child. 6) 17 days sick in 5 weeks. That is our daughters track record. 4 doctor visits to treat our daughters infections and viruses acquired from children that should have never been admitted in the first place. But who cares, right? The key is for Miss Chu to have the cash flow coming in. 7) The Ivy Preparatoty School is a big statement. I call this whole rig a bunch of false advertising. Not sure how they got the state license to run the child car facility. Classic example of check the box application. Anyways, folks, do your research. We wish we did...

My 13-mo old daughter attended the ivy kindergarten for only one month during which…read moreshe was sick for 17 days due to other sick kids with visible symptoms being admitted everyday. Our daughter has a strong immune system and travelled and lived with us in Europe, Mexico, and all over the US and has been around many people . The ivy owners (who never had children of their own or any education related to child development) did not show any compassion or understanding and kept the deposit $1,362 and annual supplies fees of nearly $500 because they need to "run their business" and fund their material aspirations. Also, bruises and bumps on our daughter were never explained. Ann Chu, the owner, always replied that she does not know where our child got them clearly demonstrating the place is either short handed or simply does not have time to pay attention to your kid. Besides multiple throat, sinus, and ear infections our child (a long with a few more kids) suffered from a severe unstoppable diarrhea the day we pulled her out of this nightmare. This was the last present from the ivy school. It took over a month to restore the health of our little one. She lost sleep and and cried for one month after we left the Ivy school. I am a psychologist with 10+ years of experience. Please consider my review before putting your precious child in the hands of these charlatans.

It has been long due to write the review about kiddie academy of Reston. My then 41/2 year old…read moredaughter attended the apples classroom with Ms Brook for almost a year until we moved out of that area, and she started kindergarten. Both my daughter and myself had a great experience there. Compared to her previous daycares which were in another state, kiddie academy, and specifically her teachers exceeded my expectation. Here I noticed a big change in my daughter. She has always been eager to go to her class, which was definitely a positive change, and her teachers get the full credit. She developed a very positive attitude towards reading and writing, science projects, art - few of the many things to mention. Being a full time working mother, I also needed extra help other than the daycare time. Kiddie academy office staff and even the owner herself were personally extremely helpful, and went above and beyond to meet my needs including finding me a nanny as well to help me take care of her when the daycare was closed. Last but not the least, I was returned the deposit amount soon after my daughter left the daycare. Overall, kiddie academy has many devoted teachers and staff who help children to grow up in a positive environment, and are helping working parents to be confident that their kids are well taken care of in their absence. This is of course my personal experience. I wish all the best to kiddie academy of reston. Hope they continue to recruit and retain staff like Ms Brook, Ms Colonie who are making the difference. Well, my daughter insisted me to also write that she loved her friends there : )

Our 2 kids love their teachers and have fun activities daily. The teachers put a lot of effort into planning and preparing the classes for the daily activities and learning materials. The school's founder, Ms. Minarik, sits at the front door every single morning to greet each student with a handshake and engages them in conversation. Our son was only 2 when he was there but that routine became one of his favorites and we loved watching the way staff interacted with the children. This is a school where every child feels special and the children have wonderful role models in school to learn from. Staff turnover is low because people love working here and it is evident from the moment you walk through the front door. The classrooms are set up beautifully and class sizes are quite small in comparison to some other schools we visited. Our son's teacher knew how to find the strengths in each child and make them shine. The assistants were there because they wanted to be there and it was very clear they love children and the work they do. We had to move at the end of the year but if we had stayed near Reston, we would have kept our child at SHMS as long as possible. This is a school with heart.

She told us her own children would not have done well at the school. This is after repeatedly badgering us to withdraw our child from primary care after 1 week because he did not clean up his 'materials' from his 'work' and had trouble sitting still in circle time. Maybe this is some people's idea of a good education but sounds foreign to the Montessori method. We found such a more welcoming and amazing Montessori school just a few minutes down the road where our child prospered and is now excelling in elementary.

It's kind of competitive to get in, as there is a lottery. When I say it's a great school, both my kids who didn't go anywhere else prior to here and are very clingy, it was an insanely easy transition for them. they loved school to the point they didn't want to miss days, always proud of their projects and enjoyed seeing their friends outside of school. As expected, it kind of depends who's going to the school, as far as the events outside of school. Parent involvement/initiative fluctuate as well as affluence, e.g., one year end of year celebration/fundraiser for the parents was a golf course and then the following year at the school, etc...

The teachers have been there for years and years and they enthusiastically love what they do and the children in their care. I regularly received email updates on what the class was learning, they shared photos and even did conferences to outline their curriculum goals and my son's progress as it reached to them. I shared this with my best friend and cousin who is a preschool teacher and she was blown away by the level of engagement and communication we told her we had with not only his teachers but the directors. The curriculum is play-based, which is what we wanted. Learning through play has many benefits and we wanted this to be a fun and engaging experience for our little guy. And it was! I was initially thinking it was crazy to send a 2 year old to preschool but it turned out it was so much fun and he loved leaving to go to "school" each week. In addition to LANK being a fantastic educational experience for my son, it feels like a really close-knit community of caring parents and caregivers. Both my husband and I have met so many families that we have now become friends with through the many activities for families throughout the year. An added bonus! I highly recommend this wonderful school - a cornerstone in the Reston/Herndon community.

I have never taken the time to write a review which indicates how strongly I feel about providing…read morethis one. I started my daughter in Winwood at Reston when she was around 5 months old. I would have put her in this school from the beginning had there been a spot for her but knowing what I know now, I am not surprised that there was a waiting list. I had my child in another school when she was 10 weeks old until we moved her to Winwood. From the first day that I brought her to Winwood, I saw an actual difference in her. At the end of the day when I picked her up, she was very alert and engaged. I could tell she had been actively engaged by the teachers and environment all day. So what makes it so great? Here is my top list of reasons: 1. The teachers are WONDERFUL! They truly treat your child as their own. They also help new parents like myself navigate the different development stages (such as rolling over, crawling, using a sip cup to using a regular cup, sharing, etc...). 2. The facility itself is warm and inviting and each class room is well laid out, maintained and decorated. My daughter goes into the classroom and immediately gets immersed in something. 3. They have solid security features. They have a passcode to get into the building, a check in/out system and security cameras in all of the rooms that parents and family members can view. The grandparents LOVE being able to peek in on her throughout the day! 4. The curriculum. I know my daughter is less than 2 but she has learned sign language, animals and their sounds, colors, and more. I love that she gets to play but is also getting educated! 5. The level of communication with the parents. I love the consistent emails and newsletters from the administration and teachers. 6. And finally did I mention the teachers!!!!!! They are all so wonderful. Just when I thought I would never be able to like her next set up teachers better than the ones in her last class room, I always have. So if you are looking for a daycare...look no further! You MUST go see Winwood at Reston!

Great beginnings may be a great place during the school year but I would definitely not recommend…read moretheir summer camp. My child had an awful time there this summer and we couldn't wait for our time there to end. My child is a fun loving child and we rarely get any complaints about him from teachers. On one occasion a teacher told him if he doesn't keep quiet she'll "kick his butt" - This is just one of several issues which happened. The environment at the school was never fun and the teachers never smiled or acknowledged you or the child in the corridors regardless of the number of times they saw you. I am writing this because I wish there had been a review about Good beginnings summer camps when we were making decisions for summer camps. Hopefully this will help others to not make the mistake I made of sending my child to summer camp there. There are several other options in Reston.

My child has attended GBS summer camps for the last 3 summers. They keep getting better. Since I…read morehave to work, it is a great thing for me to know that my child is enjoying the day swimming, playing outside and making friends. I also appreciate that there is an academic aspect to the summer program - fun learning -- this summer's theme was "The Greatest Stories Ever Told." Hence, summer isn't a learning-loss time at GBS. Plus, the field trips, 1 per week, were great. I attended one, and wow, the principal and counselors in attendance did everything to make it the most enjoyable outing possible for the kids. And, I was very impressed with how well-mannered all the kids were during the outing. I think it might have had a lot to do with ... the way the staff interacted with them at a personal level. Also, GBS offers a lot of extracurricular activities for the kids, enrichment, from piano lessons to dance. These are a plus. Compare this with my child's experience at a week of YMCA camp. Whew! Counselors barking out orders there. Rough kids. Lots of down time, waiting in lines. My child told me unconditionally after 1 week (I told him he had to try it for a week), -- would not go back there. I'd only sent him to YMCA for the one week because I like to comparison shop everything. On the other hand, he was talking about how much he looked forward to next summer at GBS as soon as GBS summer camp ended. If I have to name one drawback at GBS ... I'm thinking ... I really can't think of one. Even the school's lunches are good. Wait! I thought of one. Summer's before this last one, I did notice that Good Mornings weren't dispensed 100% to me. Now, I am a Good Morning person. I think that it should be a requirement for everyone who passes within 3 feet of another person, before 12 noon, to say Good Morning! But, this year, a slight adjustment in staff, and I got 100% Good Mornings! So, that is why I say it gets better each year.

I currently have 2 kids at Fiore , 10 year old boy and 13 year old girl. Both kids been at fiore…read moresince they were 4 year old. We picked Fiore and stayed there because we believe in the Montessori philosophy. Specifically these are the factors. Academic Approach: The Montessori method helps kids pursue their curiosity and learning in such a way that ensures that reward is internal (i.e. love of learning) and not external (shiny sticker or grade). Kids at Fiore do their work in small groups as opposed to large classrooms that are more lecture based or didactic in nature. Doing it this way allows kids to have more flexibility in pursuing things that they find fascinating. They all still learn everything that is needed but it is done in such a way that the child feels more in control of that journey. In middle school they have seminars where it almost feels like college ,where kids work independently or in small groups to solve various problems. What I found with that approach is that my kids seem to have more of an open mind set and do not limit themselves to learning just what is expected of them. Often they cover material many grade levels above what they would have in a traditional environment. To me this basically boils down to having an environment that creates a strong foundation for kids to pursue what they are genuinely passionate about and also having internal tools to solve whatever problem is in front of them. Community: There is a very strong sense of community in the school and it is a bit of an antidote to our increasingly digital world. Many of these kids spend 2-3 years together in the primary program, 6 years in the elementary school and 2-3 years in the junior high program. Relationships run deep.. School is small which means kids have to learn to resolve conflicts and manage relationship with every member of their class, versus in a bigger school they are more apt to just avoid the people they don't want to deal with. This sense of community extends way past graduation, during birthday parties or other events we routinely see kids who left years past, and the kids immediately reconnect with out missing a beat. Emphasis on play/outdoor/nature and rejection of cell phones/social media: School has large wilderness areas where kids can have unstructured play, push boundaries - climb trees, piss off occasional bees, dig up old bottles and make bases. Every year our elementary school and junior high go on 3-5 day camping trips with kids making all the planning etc. In junior high, kids do hydroponic gardens and cook for each other every Friday. In addition, none of the kids have social media and cell phone use is not allowed. Most parents seem to be on the same wavelength so there is no peer pressure to get an instagram or snapchat account. This helps limit all the toxicity that happens in the digital space that crowds out real relationships and learning. Teachers: In Montessori, teachers are called guides. My experience is that teachers vary in style (our last elementary guide was very into outdoors and the current one is more focused on academics). But regardless they run a very calm nurturing environment, kids are treated as people with respect and the teachers have a good pulse on each kid's needs as far as development goes. The Head of the school is always available, open to feedback and is a great resource for child development questions.

As a parent, watching my child grow in Fiore's Montessori Adolescent Program has been truly…read moreinspiring. The program provides a thoughtful balance of academic learning, practical life skills, and emotional development. I've seen meaningful growth in confidence, communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively. I deeply appreciate the guidance, respect, and support my child receives from the teachers. I feel confident that Fiore Montessori is preparing students not only for academic success, but for life as capable, responsible, and compassionate young adults.
