CareVet has ruined the formerly excellent Freeport Veterinary Hospital. They to longer return phone calls in a timely manner. When we called for an emergency they failed to respond promptly and when they responded the next day they would not see our cat. Our elderly cat is on a long term drug to resolve a chronic condition that was prescribed by Dr Norman before CareVet took over and now they will not extend the prescription. They have eliminated the separation of dogs and cats in the waiting room (which was brilliant). Their staff is no longer the friendly, happy staff that we saw in the past and the vet that gave the last exam did not have any knowledge of the cat's history or did she seem to care. We cannot wait to change vets. read more

This was our first visit to this practice. Our appointment was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. We waited 90 minutes before we even saw the veterinarian. They then made us wait another hour before we received the medication and could check out. This appointment took 2.5 hours total for a simple exam. The overwhelming majority of this time was spent waiting in the waiting room or exam room. There did not appear to be a single other patient in the practice while we were there, so I'm perplexed as to why we had to wait this long. When I got home, I reviewed the receipt because I felt the total was higher than the estimate, and I realized they charged us twice for one of the medications. The staff and veterinarian seemed generally friendly/competent, but the wait time, coupled with the billing mistake, is a deal breaker for me. I will not return to this practice. read more

They lied to us over the phone regarding Maine State law & annual well checks for dogs. Since this chain took over the Freeport Vet. Hospital, it has proven to put profit over pets. We left the practice after almost 4 years with the previous owner. Look for a place with greater integrity. Trust me. read more

Dr Desir was amazing with my little dog. And he took thr time to educate me on her current condition and the anatomy of her knee so that I was more informed. It was a great experience for both of us. We used Freeport Vet for 13 years for our German Shepherd The care we received was always top quality and the staff was always caring and helpful. Our dog was diagnosed with cancer and declined rapidly, which was heartbreaking for us. Dr. Radding and her staff assisted with us with medicines to extend our dog's life and make him more comfortable. When the time came to make the toughest of decisions and send our dog to heaven the level of care he received was more than we could have ever ask for. Dr Radding made what is a terrible experience as calm and gentle as possible. She clearly cares for both the animal and the owner's needs. When the time comes for us to get another pet there is no doubt where we will go for Vet services, we will return to Freeport Vet and Dr. Radding and staff. read more

I was worried about switching, but knew it made more sense to have a relationship with a vet close by... My worries melted away as the competent, empathetic doctor looked over my boys. They are very professional and caring. They will work with you if you are on a budget and offer several different annual care plans for your pet. The specialize in working with fearful dogs and have a behavioral specialist on staff who is very friendly and helpful. We have two dogs and a senior cat, all of whom LOVE it at the Freeport Veterinary Hospital! They take such good care of our pets, and really go out of their way to make sure the member of our family treated well. They practice a form of fear free veterinary medicine that has made it so our dogs are actually excited to go see their buddies at the vet, especially Dr. Radding! The veterinarians are very informed and up to date on the most recent pet medicine, and we've found that where some veterinarians will tell you what you want to hear, the Freeport staff tells you what you need to hear, which, in turn, gives the best care you can get. Brought our 4 month old kitten in because she was vomiting bile and not eating or drinking. At first all seemed well. They did blood-work (all good), took x-rays (nothing), gave her IV fluids, for a grand total of $445, and sent us home. The next day, they called to get an update on her status (again seemed like an amazing place). No vomiting, but not really eating or drinking either. They said they wanted us to bring her in so they could do another x-ray, because if she ate something that caused a blockage, it may not have been detectable on the x-rays from the previous day, but may be detectable now if it moved through her system. Arrived and was given 2 options: x-rays for an additional $90 or bringing her to a specialist in Portland for a sonogram at $450 on Monday or $1,500 over the weekend. Minus the x-rays, the visit to be told our options cost $100. The reason this is a 1 star rating is because these options should have 100% been given over the phone. So now I am at the point that I don't think it was concern AT ALL that prompted the phone call, I truly believe they saw it as an opportunity to get more $ out of us. Because of course, now our kitten still needs a sonogram (if it is a blockage will also need costly surgery), and now it's the weekend. If we were given our options over the phone, we would have skipped this office and immediately headed to Portland for the ultrasound. We could have avoided paying another $700: $100 out of pocket to be given options that should have been given over the phone, and another $600 out of pocket because we missed the opportunity to get an ultrasound before the weekend. BOOM! This place just lost our confidence and our business. RESPONSE TO VET: 100% FALSE! RESPONSE TO LIE #1: It was NOT told to me nor did I ask for the anti-nausea medication. That was done 100% by you without my consent. I only consented to the dehydration fluids ONLY! RESPONSE TO LIE #2: It was NOT recommended that I bring Jessi back for a recheck that afternoon (since it was already Friday) or take Jessi to the emergency clinic for further evaluation. The lady on the phone stated that Dr. Cote WANTED TO SEE IMMEDIATELY - that same day, so I left work! I was also told that she needed another x-ray. Upon arrival, I'd asked why didn't we just send her to Portland from the beginning since your x-rays are often inconclusive, you stated "More often than not, we don't need to go that route.", but at that point it's too late. You already charged us an additional $100. read more

This place is honestly the most amazing practice ever. As a neurotic pet owner (I'm sure some of you can relate) I am very picky about who I bring my fur babies to. I can say with 100% confidence that Freeport Veterinary Hospital is the best veterinary practice I have ever encountered. Transitioning to Freeport Vet after moving back and forth between two other area vets has been an incredible experience. Dr. Radding speaks with such confidence and the comfort level my dogs show with her definitely supports that. We must add, we love the Techs and Corena has connected well with both of my girls. I never felt rushed, and was welcomed to stay in the exam room while my Maddie was having some tests run on her. I was offered water, repeatedly, while we anxiously awaited some relief. It's been a long recovery, but with Dr Radding's quick diagnosis and proper prescription, my girl is back to her old self. Maddie was in pain when we went to Freeport Vet and was welcoming to the gentle approach of the staff even though she seemed to be in all over pain. Within 12 hours, she had done a total 180. Freeport Veterinary Hospital is what every pet owner wants for their pet. Their "fear free visits" promise is beyond true. They will do whatever it takes to make sure your pet loves to visit. Even if that means your dog eats enough hot dog pieces to turn into one! They have been there for me every step of the way with my first puppy. They performed surgery on my little puppy's mouth and I didn't worry once all day. I believe with all my heart they care for their pet patients as if they were their own pets. If I ever move away from Freeport I will continue to return to stay with the wonderful team at Freeport Veterinary Hospital. read more

We absolutely loved the vet techs and the office staff - they were always so friendly and effective at their jobs. That being said - we had an absolutely terrible experience with Dr. Radding on what should have been a routine procedure. We got both our puppies neutered on the same day with Dr. Radding. A few days after surgery, one of our dogs Tucker was starting to show some swelling in his lower abdomen. We thought this was very strange because it was pretty far from his incision site and the incision site looked like it was healing normally. I immediately called Freeport Veterinary hospital to tell them what was going on and to see if we should bring him in to be seen. The receptionist relayed our message to the staff and they told us to keep an eye on him and to call back if it gets worse. In my opinion, Dr. Radding should have insisted upon seeing him since he was her patient and there was clearly something unusual going on. We watched Tucker constantly over the next few days. He got to a point where he was swollen from his chest all the way down to his hind legs and in a lot of pain. We rushed him to the emergency vet in Portland and they suggested that he could have a hematoma from his neuter surgery. They warned us that it could resolve on its own, but Tucker might need another surgery if it turns into an infection. He gave us some antibiotics and pain meds and suggested that we bring Tucker to Dr. Radding as soon as possible so she could examine him since she was the one who did the surgery. We called Freeport first thing the next morning and told them what had happened the night before at the Emergency vet and the symptoms Tucker was continuing to have. I was hoping to come in right away because he was clearly in a bad state, but they couldn't get us in until that afternoon. Fine. When we arrived, we saw a different doctor because Dr. Radding was busy with another patient. I would have expected Dr. Radding to make it a priority to see Tucker given the unusual and scary situation and because he was HER patient. The other doctor brought Tucker out back because she really wanted Dr. Radding to see it, given how severe and unusual it was. When the other doctor got back (Dr. Radding did not come see us personally) she mentioned that it could be a hematoma, but the only way to know for sure would be to open him back up. She said most hematomas eventually resolve themselves. So we were sent home with pain meds, sedatives, antibiotics, and instructions to ice Tucker's belly three times a day. There was not a single mention of the possibility of that it could become infected and require another surgery. Also, we were charged for an office visit which I felt inappropriate given that this was a complication from the surgery. A few days later after following the vet's advice, Tucker was in so much pain that he would not let us ice his belly anymore and he could barely move. We rushed him to the Emergency vet in Portland and we were able to see the same doctor that we saw a few nights earlier. He told us that Tucker had a very large abscess and needed to go into surgery ASAP to drain it and remove all the infected tissue. This was terrifying, but it was the first time that I felt that someone really cared about Tucker and wanted to help him get better. Tucker had a long recovery after his second surgery, but I'm happy to say that now he is as good as new. After the emergency surgery, I called Freeport vet to let them know what had happened. I figured that at this point, Dr. Radding would surely want to speak to us and talk about Tucker's post-op care for his second surgery. We got nothing. At this point, I was extremely disappointed in how she had handled the situation. It wasn't until I moved all four of our pets to a different vet that we finally got a call from Dr. Radding. I let her know my concerns with how she handled the situation. She was apologetic but said that their office renovations and her peer's maternity leave had kept her very busy which was her reason for why she didn't give Tucker the care he deserved. While the apology was nice, there is no excuse for how this was handled. If we had blindly followed her instructions and didn't diligently stay home and watch him for an entire week, things could have ended much differently for Tucker. Seeing all these glowing reviews really makes me nervous because that is why I initially chose to bring my pets to Freeport Veterinary hospital. Being friendly and good with dogs is not what you need in your vet. You need someone who is knowledgeable enough to determine possible reasons for symptoms, able to clearly communicate to their clients and warn them about could happen next, and be diligent and caring enough to follow up personally when a surgery that they performed results in major complications. We are the only ones who can protect our pets and I know that I will never bring any of mine to Freeport Veterinary hospital ever again. read more

We bring our dog and two cats to Freeport Veterinary Hospital. We usually see Dr. Radding who does an awesome job to make both us and our pets comfortable. Always lots of treats for our pets to minimize their anxiety. Recently, Freeport Vet was extremely accommodating. We noticed one of our cats had some dried blood on her fur. Since she has long hair, we couldn't see much else. Freeport Vet got us in that day to be seen and turns out the cat had an abscess that needed to have surgery - which was also done on the same day. Our cat is now healthy and happy. I highly recommend seeing them at Freeport Veterinary Hospital. read more

These folks are the best! I have moved around Maine quite often and consequently have had several Veterinarians for my (now 14 yo) 5 pound Maltese. Yesterday she had surgery to remove a large cyst on her neck. There were serious concerns due to her age and a heart murmur. Thanks to the expertise and compassion shown to my little girl, she has come through with flying colors!! I have had many age-related problems with my dog, which I, of course, always consider an emergency! I call them up and we are seen within a couple of hours every single time. Our youngest family member is a 3 yo adorable but fearful, resource guarding rescue. At baseline, he is beyond stressed and afraid when getting even basic veterinary care. Mim at Freeport Veterinary Hospital has worked one on one with Oakley and myself on a weekly basis to help Oakley develop a positive association with coming to the vet. Over time, Oakley went from "putting on the brakes" as we walked towards the clinic door to getting excited as we drive into the parking lot, running in, sitting and waiting for his snack! With guidance, I was able to train Oakley to happily wear a cone. Providing care for Oakley will always be a challenge, but at Freeport Veterinary Hospital they approach him with patience and compassion combined with low stress handling. They do not treat him as a "bad" or "dangerous" dog. Recently Oakley needed medical care. Both Mim and Dr. Menolly Cote discussed the game plan with me and allowed me to be present to comfort Oakley while he received care. They were attentive and sensitive to his special needs. To have a fearful pet is a rewarding, joyful AND stress filled experience. Having care providers for Oakley that understand his behavior and how to work with him really helps. Because those options SHOULD have been given over the phone (and based on your response YOU AGREE that they should have been given over the phone). Too bad YOU weren't able to be at either appointment! I want to add, too, that when someone I work with saw me on your Facebook page, they had a very vehement NEGATIVE reaction telling me to never bring my pets to you because of your horrible reputation in the community. We had a free vet visit here for our kitten when we adopted her from the Brunswick Humane Society in Brunswick. They were able to get us right in and were located just off the Freeport exit. I was really impressed with their staff and the clinic which was very clean. When I mentioned to the vet tech and doctor that my kitty was going to be on a raw food diet, they were very understanding and supported the decision. I feel that they are a very progressive clinic and I would recommend them to anyone living in the Freeport-Brunswick area. If we lived closer, we would do our annual visits here. read more
