We've only brought our dog here twice for over nights but we will never bring her back. After the first visit there for a few days our dog came back with the requested bath and pink eye. This last time (also a few days) she came back without the requested bath, completely tore up the bottom of her bed (she ONLY ever chews on her bones or dog toys) and with TWO deep gashes in her side from a bite (has never been an aggressive dog) and no one told us she was bit or hurt. In the past 4 months, or so, we dropped our dog off at Doggie Cottage for the weekend. The first time we picked our dog up from Doggie Cottage he had eye infections in both his eyes. The next morning he couldn't open his eyes so I had to take him to the vet to find out he had a severe case of pink eye. I figured this was a fluke so I let it slide. The 2nd, and last time, we picked him up our dog had really bad diarrhea, which is unusual for him. We were up all night letting our poor pups out because it was a really bad case of diarrhea. We use two kennels regularly. Our other kennel has NEVER had any of these issues. Common denominator is Doggie Cottage. Needless to say, we are never taking him there again. read more

I've taken my dog here numerous times. the ladies are super friendly and they do a great job! They are also reasonably priced.

We've been long time patrons of Doggie Cottage for multiple dogs. They are currently under new management and after our dog's last stay in August of 2021, we will never return. When we picked up our dog, we were informed that his bed had been hosed off because he had peed on it. We asked when the last time he had been let out and were told at 6PM and again at 10PM. In 8 years, this dog has never gone to the bathroom indoors. If he went out at 10PM, there is no way he would have gone in his own space before morning. When I stated this, we were told that he had actually peed in his kennel every night for a week! During his stay, we called about every other day to see how he was doing. The answer was always "great," and they never mentioned the peeing. They had also not fed him by the time we picked him up at 8:30. I won't entrust them with my dog again. read more

What can I say about the Doggie Cottage except that we are truly grateful that we found a place that our dog Rocco loves!! He always knows where is he is going the minute we turn onto the road. His tail starts wagging, he starts to whine, and he starts "talking". Lol Our pets are as important to us as our children...and we always made sure the kids had the best care possible. Rocco definitely thinks that daycare is his second home....we know that it's definitely his 2nd family!! He has been going there for the last 3 years, and I can't imagine him going anywhere else!! The staff is awesome! So friendly and caring. If a dog doesn't feel like "napping" then he is not made to stay in a pen...someone will take him out to play. The owners & staff have accommodated us every single time we have called-whether it be for last minute care or an end of day call asking "can he spend the night". They have never turned us away. Definitely the "hotspot" where all the cool dogs hang out!!! read more

The place is absolutely disgusting, the "workers" there do not pay attention to the dogs what so ever and multiple times I have picked up my dog with cuts and scrapes on him. Only explanation is he plays too hard. Might want to think about another doggie day care unless you are ok with your dog not getting any attention and letting other dogs attack yours with no intervening. Makes sense why they're the only ones that will take all the dogs, want the money and that's it. Horrible reviews and I happy to leave another one for them! I am so sorry if you bring your dog here, but there's alternatives!!! Camp bow wow portland Maine is amazing place where there is live cameras, an actual indoor yard, group dogs based on size and energy levels, hoses in the yards (incase emergency's), and etc.. doggie cottage has none of that and they use metal poles(broken poop scoops) and sticks against the dogs and have no training in handling an attack, PLEASE STOP BRINGING YOUR DOGS HERE!!! I love each an every one of your fur babies and want the best for them! wanted to add that the manager at the time (Ashlee Bradbury) reached out to multiple former employees asking them to write positive reviews about the doggie cottage when they were put on blast on the news. This resulted in absolutely nothing. Such unprofessional staff and was having an open affair with a customer. They never inform parents on ANY altercations and they will not contact or inform you if your dog has been injured or anything along those lines. They train staff to use their hands to drag the dogs by their necks, and are always distracted while in the yard with the animals. They throw treats in the yard with 60+ dogs in it, and only have one person out there "watching" them. And during the meet and greets they fake it till they make it, they hide the beating sticks and tell staff to pretend to acknowledge the dogs. GRAY DOGGIE COTTAGE is amazing! the meet and greets are very thorough they give you a whole tour of the facility as well as temperament testing which each dog that comes through. The staff is very professional and kind and treated my dog with the utmost care. working in the pet industry myself a lot of people talk from a pedestal of ignorance, of course you think your dog is the best thing in this world and it is but at the end of the day they are animals and have natural instincts to them and the staff is very knowledgeable in handling certain situations. I worked there for almost a year and I can say that Its a very poor environment for any dog, and the yard is a hotbed for anxiety and fights. Employees are run ragged, and a yard of 70 dogs is usually supervised by only one or two people (nowadays it seems like just one person since no one wants to work there). The current Scarborough manager is known for using racial slurs as well as other offensive language. The previous manager was really rough with the dogs and encouraged other employees to do the same, which the current manager has continued. Dogs would miss meals, skip medications, and were stuffed into too small kennels since we struggled to kennel the high volume of dogs, and sometimes without blankets or water. We were discouraged from questioning these things until we just accepted them as "just how it is." I admit that I was part of that while I was there. It wasn't until stepping away from the situation that I'm able to clearly see how harmful this place is. I know what I witnessed was pretty mild compared to what others have seen, plus I left there a year ago and things seem to have only gone downhill since. Absolutely do NOT bring your dog here. read more

My dog has been going to DC for daycare since he was a puppy and he loves it! He's all excited when I drop him off and at pickup he's happy and tired out from playing with his buddies. The place is clean with two large fenced yards for the dogs to run around. The staff is very friendly and know each dog by name. I like the convenient location right off the turnpike and their hours are great for us working folks. My dog was also boarded there for almost two weeks without any issues. I recently joined Yelp so I'm sharing a boarding experience I had from this past August. I boarded my sweet Sheltie mix for a week as I was on vacation. I had boarded her there before and never had issues. I was told that this place was recently under new management. This should've been my first sign to run. My experience this time was awful! When I picked my dog up, she was cowering and I started petting her head. I felt a huge lump and it was full of dried blood. I asked the young girl who was working and she said she didn't know anything about it. She left for a few minutes and asked another staff member and they had no knowledge of her lump and blood on her head. So, what I gathered from this was: a) no one was appropriately watching the dogs, their happenings, and whereabouts, b) no one pet my dog at all because if they did, they clearly would've felt that lump (that was about the size of a bouncy ball that a kid would play with from a toy vending machine). I asked to speak to a manager promptly and was told that no manager was available but that a manager could call me that afternoon/evening or the next day. Did I hear from said manager?! Nope. I brought my dog to the vet for her head injury and for a weird cough she developed. I took it on video and played it for the vet. I was told it was kennel cough. Now, I had my dog vaccinated but was told dogs can still catch a mild case of it. So this was frustrating because this clearly told me that vet records were not required, even though I brought my updated vet records every time I boarded my dog. I walked out with a $150+ bill from the vet and bad taste in my mouth from this boarding facility. I will never take my dog here again. I continue to spread the word regarding the lack of professionalism at this establishment and the lack of care for the dogs here. read more

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So take a good look and you will see why I will NOT be bringing Sam back to be groomed. There was no excuse for this as I keep Sam clean and brushed. He was not matted and I made it very clear to the staff the first time I brought Sam to the Doggie Cottage that they were NEVER to shave him. He use to have a skirt and was beautiful. I wish I could give Doggie Cottage a -5 for sheer lack of professionalism. We have been bringing our sweet and affectionate boxer mix, Hattie, to Doggie Cottage off and on since she was born a year and a half ago. Despite several recommendations from friends to STAY AWAY from this establishment, the simple convenience of its location to our house made it easy and accessible. We overlooked the fact that this particular facility didn't perform a behavioral interview process, an initial temperament test, or introduction to other canine clients; red flags that we should have taken seriously. On Monday, July 25, 2016, I received a call at work that there was "an incident" with our dog and that I needed to call them immediately. I was extremely annoyed that they called right before they closed from 12-3 for "doggie nap-time." (Also known as the staff's 3 hour lunch/Facebook break.) Despite many attempts to get through to them by phone, I finally got a response by Facebook messenger. The initial story was that a few dogs got into a scuffle and that Hattie joined in. When Phil LaFlamme, general manager, who was mowing the lawn at the time, approached the herd to break up the scuffle, our dog nipped his hand. (What do you expect?!?! Again, a sign that staff does not have formal training.) We were told that Hattie could not return to the Doggie Cottage. At first I was annoyed. We'd been bringing Hattie there for almost two years, spending hundreds of dollars while overlooking the facilities flaws. As I continued to investigate into what actually happened, I got different variations of the story from various staff members. My last phone call was to the general manger himself. To put it kindly, let's just say Phil isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. He fabricated the story to say Hattie bit him so hard, he needed to have 3 stitches. At first I thought what on earth happened today that this poor guy had to go to a primary care setting to get a tetanus immunization and his laceration sutured!? Then when I asked if he actually got it sutured, he responded to say "oh no, I don't like doctors." Word of advice, before you put your foot in your mouth, find out if the dog owner is a health care provider! Also, as a health care provider, I can tell you we can't stand when patients think that their Web MD search/self-diagnosis is more valuable than our medical education. To top it off, I asked to see the video. Of course Phil refused, saying that he didn't want me to be traumatized. I think the only thing I would have been traumatized by is how my dog was actually treated that day. They pride themselves in being a "free-range" facility, but in my opinion, they take more dogs than their staff of 2-3 teenage girls can handle, give little supervision, and have no other training than being able to upload photos to their facebook page all day. Word of advice, go elsewhere, there's too many red flags and shadiness happening at Doggie Cottage!!! read more

Our four year old female golden Sadie, has gone to the Doggie Cottage for day care twice a week and has been boarded up to two weeks for the last 2 1/2 years and she loves it. Her tail is wagging as we approach the facility and she can't wait to go play, and be tired at the end of the day. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and compasionate. We have seen continuous improvements at the facility. They work hard to meet her needs including frequent belly rubs. Sadie is a member of our family, and we completely trust leaving her in the care of Doggie Cottage. read more

These people are so wonderful. I was in a total bind, as Dances with Dogs had completely flaked out on me just hours before my pup was to begin attending nursery school, leaving me totally stranded for a puppy sitter on a morning I had half a dozen things going on. I called around, only to learn that most places don't take pups under 16 weeks (for good reason!). Doggie Cottage was able to take my sweet puppy in, and they had her gently introduced to some adult and young dogs. She did not act afraid to play there, so I left her for two hours, and when I came back, she was calm, happy (and a little dirty!). I was worried that she'd be bullied, or hurt by a bigger dog, but the staff at Doggie Cottage reassured me that they'd take good care of her. Prices are fantastic, and the location worked really well for me. Would definitely use again, especially when my pup is older. read more

I will never take my sweet dog back to this terrible place. My dog has never shown an ounce of agression, never growled in his life, but when we went to pick him up, we were told that he was agressive to other dogs. When we tried to ask for details, they spoke over me and would not listen or say anything remotely nice or explain what they meant at all. Obviously if they think he was being aggressive that's a major issue that we should be able to learn more about. They wouldn't stop talking over me and repeating themselves. Clearly there was a dog there that was agressive and if my dog had to defend himself I want him nowhere near there again. Why can't I see where he stays? Why can't I know more about what happened? Why can't they show some sense of customer service and be human enough to have a conversation with me? They are sketchy. My sweet dog gets A+ reports every place he has ever stayed. When I picked him up he was soaking wet and covered in mud. Ill never go back to Doggie Cottage. read more

Our little Lhasa Apso just returned from being groomed. I noticed blood on the rug where she was sitting and, after investigating, discover her anal area had been skinned and she was bleeding. The area affected covers at least an inch directly above her anus. I am presently waiting for my vet to return my call. Obviously we will not be going back. I have called both the Gray and Scarborough facilities but no one has returned my call. As a side note to this horror story, in looking on line for their phone numbers I noticed their rates. We had been taking her there and had been charged $35 dollars. The last time she was there, prior to today, we had a friend pick her up. They charged $ 50. Today when we got her they again wanted 50 but we said it seems high so they charged 45. Just now on their website the 35 dollar fee we always had is still there. They arbitrarily just hiked our fee. We never asked for anything other then what we had been doing and obviously she sure didn't receive extra services. I would never trust this company with my pet again and I hope whoever reads this thinks twice about using them. My sister takes her dog to A Plus grooming in New Gloucester and is extremely happy with the service and the 35 dollar fee. read more

The Doggie Cottage in Scarborough appears to be decent straight forward kennel - it looks clean, nice yard for the dogs to play out back, and even has flexibility in allowing dogs to sleep in the 'living-room' compared to kennels each night. My issue is not so much with the conditions of the facilities, but in what I noticed and experienced when I picked my girl up after a six day stay over the holidays. When we got home, I noticed a patch of dried blood on her back, which at first I thought was a tick, but on further investigation, was a puncture wound. I called the Doggie Cottage, and they simply stated that they saw nothing - end of story. For days, I kept finding more little wounds and scratches all over her back. When I took her to the vet for antibiotics, the vet noted that she saw another dog the same week with similar wounds that stayed at the Doggie Cottage. When I followed up with the Doggie Cottage again, I did not receive any response. I understand that there can be accidents in their care, but what happened here was clearly repeated attacks that were 'unnoticed' indicating their lack of resident supervision, then compounded by a complete lack of professionalism to simply respond to inquiries about the attacks. I hope that this was unique incident, but I certainly will not be taking my girl to the Doggie Cottage again. read more
