I love this church! When I moved to Appleton as an 18-year-old college student who knew absolutely…read moreno one with whom to go to church, St. Joe's took me under its wing and made me feel completely welcome. Carol, who is in charge of young adult outreach, had a table set up at the activities fair my first week at Lawrence University, and arranged for all the Catholic students to walk to St. Joe's together. I filled out some paperwork, too, so I got an email list with weekly prayer emails, info about events for young people at St. Joe's or St. Mary's, how to get a local prayer partner, etc. This was exactly what I was looking for in a church while in college! I am a fan of all of the priests who I've ever seen preside over mass here. I feel completely valued as a parishioner, like I walk into the warm embrace of a family when I arrive at church. I love when the priest asks if there are any out-of-town visitors at the beginning of mass and then he will make a good-natured comment (like, "Ohhh, Bear country") and will specifically welcome that person to the church. It's really sweet! Then, I love when the priest tells a joke at the end of mass. Who knew church could be so fun? Additionally, the Homilies are almost always on point and speak to me as very relevant to my life. After going to church here for the first time, I tried St. Mary's that is a very short block away on the same street. I had heard that St. Mary's is a little more "traditional" and that it has hymnals and kneelers, two things that were staples at my church back at home. St. Joe's distinctly lacks hymnals and kneelers, so I tried St. Mary's. Even though I have been back there several times, it doesn't have the same welcoming, friendly, non-judgmental atmosphere that I have come to love so much at St. Joe's. Even though I have now moved out of Appleton, I know I will always be welcome back at St. Joe's whenever I happen to be back in the area on a Sunday.

We went church shopping 3 years ago when our girls said they were not excited about worship…read moreservices at our prior church. My attitude is that church should support and encourage worship, not turn it into a chore. We shopped a few churches near our home and decided on Christ The Rock. It is a huge church, but that presents so many opportunities to find meaningful connections. Services are at 8:45 and 10:45 on Sunday. Sunday school for pre-K - 5 is at the same time as services, which is a blessing to my wife and me--no distractions. Music is contemporary Christian rock (check out 91.9 FM for a sampling). There are 2-4 songs to start most services, then announcements and a 30-45 minute message. While the message has a strong, Biblical grounding, it is readily applicable to your day-to-day. Let's face it, we can all read the Bible, church is for worship and learning. I am amazed at how well the sermon message applies to my daily life. I tell people that it is God's way of speaking into my life--just in time and just enough. In fact, messages are typically so applicable that it feels like they have been listening to my dinner conversations! Did I mention that my girls can't wait to go to Sunday school? They have really figured out how to make Sunday school fun and engaging. Volunteers are background checked and trained. Security is well thought out but almost seems unnecessary. Check out their website for sermon recordings and more: http://www.christtherock.org

Awesome church…read more Awesome Children's program! Although, I have been going here since I moved here in August and still feel a bit disconnected - even though I am now a member and have done some of the activities. I think you have to make the effort but the great thing you can come and check out the church without being bombarded! I also love their cafe which is open on other days - not just Sunday! And they have a gym - you do not have to be a member of the church to go.

Worship services are filled with Bible based teaching and modern worship music. The pastors present scripture with discuss how to apply it to your life. If you're looking for a Holy Spirit led church, this church is worth checking out. You can sample podcasts of preaching from the website if interested: http://www.appletonalliance.org/ From the home page you can also "meet" and hear the Senior Pastor's testimony. Dress is mixed, from very casual to more formal. You won't find a church organ here. While I can appreciate the history and tradition of organ music, there's also a reason organ music is played in haunted houses-- it can be too dominant and creepy. Worship is upbeat and people sing together. Scripture and song lyrics are presented on a very large screen at the front and the setting is welcoming and comfortable.
