Freedman Auto has great service, no question about it, and Jake is a great guy. However, they are NOT cheap. They charge more to install and balance tires, AC recharge, and oil changes than any other shop I've been to. I've gotten my oil changed for as little as $15. Freedman charged me $80 just for the labor- not including oil (I brought the oil and filter.) They claimed it took longer on my car because they had to take off 'guards'. Every car has some type of skid plate or scratch guard. I've changed oil on dozens of different types of cars- the time difference is negligible. My advice- if money is no object, I'd definitely take my car to Freedman, or if your car needs serious work. But, for routine work like the examples listed above, go somewhere else. read more

I wanted to get the tires changed on my car. With a scheduled appointment and a hope that all goes well, I went in, only to be greeted by the owner in the most enthusiastic way! He wasn't just gracious but so understanding as well. Here's how, I wanted to change the tires that I had with something new and good, yet inexpensive, so I'd narrowed down on NEXXUS tires for a grand total of $483 for my car's specs. However, I had the specs wrong, and technically required tires with a bigger dimensions. I also had thought of splitting the costs of changing the tires to two payments, so in my head, I'd get two front tires changed now, and then come back a month later to get the next set changed. Mr. Freedman had such a keen sense of customer satisfaction that he was able to figure this whole deal out without having spoken to me before. So, ultimately, he not only worked out a financial plan for me to pay for two tires a little later, but also gave me better tires that would fit, and glide on the road, but also work well within my budget! Walked in on Tuesday and greeted by Tony. He heard what all issues I had been facing with my car and told me about the required diagnosis. So before I share my experience with freedman,  let me share the history.. I bought a used 2005 saab 9-5 aero from a dealer. This was my first car and i didn't know much about the cars. Everything was fine for 5 months and then got my first CEL, which was P0300.. With that there was bad vibrations on the car while applying brakes on hight speed. Luckily my dealer replaced the ignition coil and spark plugs under warranty and the CEL issue was gone. Also trusted my friend who owns a garage for front brake job and he did some sub standard work and put in some after market brakes (got to know when it was pulled out at freedman), vibrations were back after two months.. At Freedman, Tony told me to visit my old mechanic for repairs as it would be under warranty. But I decided not to go back to someone who had made a fool out of me in the past whom I trusted as a friend and asked Tony to replace the brakes and fix other issues with the car. Full diagnosis was done and everything was fixed. But the brakes still had a little vibration from rear brakes. Tony mentioned that as they pointed out issue with front brakes and not rear in diagnosis they put in set of rear brakes free of cost and now my car runs like brand new.. There were other non urgent issues with my car which was pointed out by Tony, which if need araise would definitely go to Freedman to get them fixed. This is recommended to everyone in and around edison. They are fare with repair costs and won't try to over sell anything to their customers. read more

Had all four rotors and pads done on my wife's 4-runner with better than average parts. Freedman installed them at a better price than two other locations gave me...... Fast and great service, but that's not where it ends for a company to be good. Little over a year later we have a bad pulsing. Turns out that the front rotors with about 15k on them have lows and highs on them. Freedman called the manufacturer and worked with us to an amazing resolve. I've been to this shop several times and everytime I've gone the guys there have all been very helpful and friendly. The very first time I went I was inquiring about new wheels because my metal wheels have a slow leak where it meets the tires. Other places told me I would need to get a new set of wheels but Freedman told me that I just needed to have them sealed around which worked out great and saved me money. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. Last Friday I was driving from Maryland to New York when my car broke down on the New Jersey turnpike - flat in the middle of both states. Panicked and far from home I frantically called 3 of the closest mechanics, the first two of which blew me off telling me they don't have time to even look at it today. Then, as fate would have it, I called Freedman Auto Service and Jake (the owner) picked up. Jake not only assured me he would look at it today but also promised to try to fix it in the same day if he could. In addition, he stayed on the line and talked me through how to get a tow truck to the Turnpike and offered to give directions to the tow truck driver if needed. When I got there, he immediately looked at the car and was able to put together an assessment. He even gave me all the information I needed to call Hyundai and see if my warranty would cover the repair. The repair process was smooth and when I picked up the car Jake even had reassessed an existing issue that my dealer had wrongly diagnosed. He explained everything clearly and gave me notes to reference for when I get the repairs in MD. Brought my car in not knowing what was wrong with it and not knowing what to expect as far as payment. Got my car fixed within the hour, and didn't cost much at all and had great customer service. Cost around $50 dollars to fix the leakage in my car due to AC drainage being clogged. As opposed to pep boys, was going to charge me $120 dollars just to diagnose what was wrong with my car and had to leave it there for a couple of days. I find myself usually writing negative reviews on Yelp, but today was an exception lol. read more

Stopped this morning at the recommendation of a friend, and got a quote for 4 new tires and alignment that was pretty good, but didn't have time to have the job done due to work commitments. Around noontime, I made some calls to a few local places just to compare (as I do with everything). Found out that their original quote was very competitive. Went back in the afternoon and they were able to take the car right in. Got 4 new tires and an alignment in under 1.5 hours at a VERY reasonable price. Great crew of guys working at the front counter - patient and answered every question fully and courteously. I've been looking for a good local place to get routine car work (oil change, brakes, etc) done, and think I found it today. If you're in the market for tires, definitely at least call and get a quote. Very reasonable pricing and excellent customer service. read more

Went to Freedman's with components to replace the catalytic converter on my vehicle. They installed it and cleared CEL. The following day my car passed NJ inspection. It's true what's been said about Jake. He really DOES get involved, as he commented about the car having a stick shift moments after being taken into service bay and proceeded to converse with me about them. While there another gentleman was in the pleasant waiting area and I overheard the consultant tell him they had agreed last time to wait on a particular fix but would need to address it. This tells you the operation is not out to 'pad' a bill. The service I received was first rate and confidence instilled observing how this establishment is run. The price was reasonable and because I brought my own parts, afterward I was able to turn in the old unit to a catalytic converter recycler in Sayreville which covered my labor charge here. Win, win! Equally impressive was receiving a callback today asking how satisfied I was. My response was 'very' and told Curt I would be back should the need arise and will tell acquaintences to do so also. read more

This is the first time I have ever written a yelp review but I had to give my honest experience with this shop. My car broke down last September due to my alternator going out. I was stranded about 50 miles away from home/dealership so I had my car towed here after all of the rave reviews. These guys were very polite and got the work done quickly at an OK price. Lets fast forward to last week when my alternator abruptly canned while my husband was pulling off the lot of my dealership getting routine auto work done. My guys checked it out and confirmed it was in fact my alternator that clunked. I remember that it had be fixed less than a year prior so I contacted the freedman shop and they told me yes there is a warranty let me send you the information that you need. I received his email with an invoice estimation showing the company that manufactured the alternator and a short paragraph stating that I have a 2 year warranty which includes free towing. Perfect right...not so much I scroll through the sheet there is no information about who to contact to confirm this warranty or who to contact to get it towed 40 miles back to this place where the alternator was originally fixed. Ok I figured well ill go online even though i shouldn't be doing this but lets see. I tried calling several different numbers getting no where with finding information. After two days of trying I finally called Freedmans shop back to say hey listen i don't have any warranty contact information here so that I can get the tow to you guys. I was told they didn't know anything either. I did more digging and finally was able to reach someone from the warranty department who told me that since i was not the person that specifically purchased the alternator I would not have received the warranty information, that goes to whomever bought it. And also confirmed that I should not have had to call around looking for numbers when the shop or whomever their supplier was purchased it they were provided a warranty booklet. I finally called back to let the shop know this and i got silence on the other end and then was told that once they get it here they can look at it to make sure that my alternator was not due to some leak in my car blah blah (I interpreted as lets make sure it wasn't something you did)....at this point I'm livid because I wasted days trying to track down warranty information about a mechanical part I did not purchase and even when i suggested to them to contact their supplier i was blown off. I decided there was no way I would let these people touch my car again if this is the type of customer service you get. What you guys should have done was as soon as I called you go and do your research to find out about warranty information for the part that YOU purchased. Even if it wasn't mine you buy these parts all the time correct so why couldn't you have contacted your supplier to at least set me up with a direct number and provide full details about the warranty and the towing. What I found out is that in order to get the towing you have to register the product (which is normal for anything i've ever purchased) How could I have registered a product i never physically purchased. This they all found out later and not once did I get an apology or a concern for the headache i was going through trying to do their job. I believe I paid somewhere close to $800 to get my alternator fixed last year and bc of their crappy service I've decided to pay again to get in done closer to home at a trusted mechanic. BTW its only $650 at the other place to get my alternator repaired. You guys really dropped the ball here with this one for no reason except you either didn't feel like digging for the information or maybe you put a faulty alternator in to begin with and you didn't want to deal with it. Moral of the story: sometimes cheaping out at an unknown place is just not worth it. I should have just paid the few hundred dollars to get my car towed all the way back home last year bc this was not worth it. read more

I love this place- these guys are straight talkers and totally honest with their customers. I came in for an oil change and to get my wipers replaced. I had a hole in my tire and instead of telling me I needed a new one and it was unpatchable ( like at other places) they were honest about it and patched it up for me. Similarly, my boyfriend took his car in, it has a lot of issues and he's in the process of getting a new one- they did the work that was cost effective and gave him some advice instead of fixing parts on a car that was obviously going to be on it's way out. As a woman, I often feel like certain shops try to get one over on me but I've gotten nothing but respectable service and good work done here. My husband and I are traveling and are from out of state. I called Freedman's because of the great yelp reviews it has and I knew our brakes or something was really wrong! They told us via the phone they couldn't get us in until the next day and gave me someone else to call. No luck there. Because we are living in our van we decided our problem was to big and thought we could just spend the night there and have Freedman's work on it in the morning. We arrived in the afternoon and the gentleman remembered speaking to me on the phone. I cannot begin to tell you how gracious and friendly the staff were! I don't know how they did it but they managed to work us into their schedule and had us back on the road by 5:00 with a complete front brake job and oil change...UNBELIEVABLE! This is the place that I have been looking for forever! Freedman Auto Service saved me from spending a heroic amount of money over what a dealership tried to charge me. The dealership told me I had a certain issue regarding an oil leakage. I went to Freedman for a second opinion and they rectified the situation by performing a thorough inspection to see what was really actually happening. After forwarding this information to the dealership and visiting them again, they concluded what the dealership originally told me a complete false and what Freedman told me was the actual issue that was occurring. As a side note, this happened last year. I've been here countless times ever since. I'm happy to give Freedman my customer loyalty for as long as needed and after-death in the spirit realm.
