We just became members which includes entry into the Free Cellar Run. We were excited to hear some live music this Sunday afternoon and try some dry whites. Robin was very helpful choosing and we sat outside. The acoustic player played some great tunes ranging from Tom Petty, to Elvis Costello, and the Eagles. We had the charcuterie board and the pita chips and dips with two bottles of one of their driest whites. We also walked through the vineyard. Three hours of bliss under the early September blue sky. I stopped in for a sweet wine flight. Mezzo, Muscat, and Rosso. They were all good but the Muscat was my favorite. I really like the interior and the outside grounds. I like that they have mocktails. I will definitely return to try some other things. Service was very friendly. read more

On our winery trail, we stopped at Free Run Cellars. I would describe this quaint place as an upscale boutique winery. The price point is a little high, but they do have some unique wines to choose from. We found a relaxing space to unwind by a little pond adjoining the vineyard. This place is so modern cute. A lil more grown up than "hipster" in style. Inviting and intimate in size. Can get crowded easily. ROSÉ, GEWÜRZTRAMINER, & MEZZO were our top 3. ROSE--Bright, open, fruity but not jammy. Refrsingly smooth without bite some rosés have. Can actually savor the grapes. GEWÜRZTRAMINER--Very crisp and floral. Light and open flavors. Honeysuckle and lychee fruit flavors. ROSSO--A sweeter kind of Cab Sauv. Qualities of a dry red with a nice hint of sweetness. Just a touch of smoke at the end. THIS IS FANTASTIC WINE .....and it seems like a hidden gem, though that could quickly change. Heard about Free Run from a close friend and we heard about it at our terrible tasting at Round Barn (seriously how are these two related?). Once you walk in it doesn't feel like a typical winery because they offer food pairings as well as a basic tasting. I believe it was a home that was renovated, though I could be totally wrong... Anywho, you get four wines for $12, but don't fret, the pours are heavy handed and they are delicious. We decided to sit outside on their patio area and its just amazing. You see a little pond as well as the grapes. The host brings out the wines for you and shows you which ones are what you picked. We all really enjoyed all of the wine we chose and left with about 6 bottles of wine. read more

We were looking for a dog-friendly winery around town and are so glad we found this place! The patio is spaced out with big umbrellas (great when it started drizzling). The staff are very friendly but still enforced COVID safety policies politely for a very large group, which made us feel very comfortable. The wine flights were good, and the charcuterie was great! They also were flexible swapping the meat option for another cheese on our board since we are vegetarian. A great experience - we will definitely come back when we're in town again! Having been to the area multiple times, I was surprised to find this place! I had never been and it is great! They do a few things differently, which I liked. First, they have some great food, which is nice. We got the charcuterie plate with was overflowing with stuff. It was really delicious. On the weekend, they do food pairings too! They give you your four tastings all at once, in a handy carrier so you can sit down and enjoy the wine and scenery. The pours are a bit more than typically and I like that you can sit and relax vs standing at a counter. It's a small place, but super cute and great food! read more

A wonderfully relaxing place to spend a Sunday afternoon... and they accommodate dietary restrictions! Each appetizer item was created as a vegetarian alternative just for me. My friend and I learned more about this place's "pairing" experience while visiting the Lake Shore wine fest and were up for trying something different the following day. We felt very attended to during our visit and adored all of the wines and food. Annette was so pleasant and friendly and she really knew her stuff. Free Run was our second favorite of the 3 wineries we visited. There is a large tasting area and if you bring your glass from Round Barn, you get 5 tastes here. They had a warm mull wine that was pretty good but we ended up buying a couple bottles of their table red. Workers inquired about where we were going next, recommended Domaine Berrien, and gave us directions which included to NOT follow the wine map signs. She also explained ice wine to me since I am way out of the loop. Again, this winery is good for groups. We saw a group of about 20, 50-somethings having a blast here. I might take my parents with us next time we visit wineries. read more

I just moved from Indiana to Arizona after retiring. One place I miss so is Free Run! I used to drive up there with my dog Lizzie. We would sit on the patio and the glass of wine was brought to you. We could walk among the plants, pond and vineyard. When they changed to the food pairings I admit I was skeptical,,, but we made reservations with friends and it was amazing! So, I am ordering a case of Fusion, as where I am in AZ there are not close by wineries at all. People, you are so lucky to have this place so close! read more

One of my favorite vineyards and tasting room experiences in the area. The tasting room can get a little crowded on a beautiful October Saturday, but the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Free Run's cab franc is simply amazing. A big chewy red that goes great with steak and is a staple in our household. Another favorite is Ballaton Cherry wine - a tart cherry wine that both our white and red drinkers love. This is delicious mulled and served at Thanksgiving. Go to Free Run and then take your glasses and head over to Round Barn for free tastes of their wine, vodka and beer. read more

I'm a sweet wine drinker at heart, so all of my reviews are about what I believe are the best sweet wines. At Free Run Cellars, we learned that this winery is related to the Round Barn Winery as the children of the winemaker family from Round Barn decided to try winemaking on their own and open up Free Run Cellars. The best was this sweet white wine called Indulgence, which I bought a bottle. They also have a cute backyard area with picnic tables and lawn chairs to enjoy your wine/snacks. Staff was very friendly! Also, if you decide to visit Round Barn Winery afterwards, you can take your tasting token and get a discount off your tasting price there. (I believe it works vice versa as well.) read more

The building and decor were nothing special. We were greeted by a sweet little Yorkie, which thrilled me, and irritated some of my less animal-friendly girlfriends. The wine glass that I bought at Round Barn was good for a free wine-tasting here. We got to choose 5 different wines. The woman pouring was less-friendly than the gals we met at Round Barn, but still knowledgeable. My Favorite was Cabernet Franc: "Aged 20 months; elderberry resonates on the nose while hints of chocolate & almonds abound." What struck me about this wine was that it smelled like it was going to be quite sweet - but did not taste that way. It had a full, rich flavor that reminded me of cherries, without the sweetness. Wow!! What a disappointment! We have been coming to FreeRun for the last few years because we love the concept of small plates and wine pairings.... we came there recently and were sadly disappointed that they no longer over that. Wine remains the same but they no offer pre-packaged snacks... prepackaged cheese, olives and crackers!!! Nothing original or fresh! We asked if they will do small plates in the future and they said no. All prepackaged. So bummed!! That was our main reason to make the long drive all the way out there- will not be doing that anymore! Much closer winery's doing fresh food closer - do not waste your time! read more

By far the best wine that we've sampled in Michigan came from Free Run. The Cab Franc is awesome and I highly recommend it. We really enjoyed Free Run although I found the tasting room a bit small. I also felt like the staff was trying to rush us through the tasting. Despite this the quality of their wines made up for this and I will definitely be back. One of the staff members did tell us that soon Round Barn and Free Run will be changing their tasting practices. Currently if you buy a glass at either of the two wineries your tastings are free. Every time you come back to the two wineries you can just bring your glass and the tastings are free. Apparently they are going to change it so that you buy a glass for $5 and then each tasting that you want is $1. You can still bring your glass back and pay $1 per taste. read more

In Really disappointed. Best wine we have had in the area, but very unaccomodating staff. The place was pretty empty. Two of us wanted to do the tasting, at $20 per plate, but the other three had eaten already. We were told the two people with the tasting had to sit inside and the others had to be outside. So instead of spending $80 on wine and the tasting, we chose to sit together outside and spent a total of under $40. And we didn't get to try the food. A really stupid policy, that alienates locals. Sad, because for a small amount of common sense this could have been a hit. read more

Friendly staff, good wine selection. This is one of those wineries that seems to be on the bachelorette party/group tour circuit though. I've been here several times through out the years and there are always loud and obnoxious groups taking up most of the bar space. To be honest, if it wasn't for the recommendation by Free Run's sister winery, Round Barn, we probably never would have found our way down here. But we did and are happy for it. Round Barn's wine tasting glass is good here and we were able to sample some 6 wines from their menu. It was good stuff. Do not waste your $20 on the "Tasting Menu" with wine pairing. The food was very tasty but the portion sizes were RIDICULOUSLY SMALL. My Michigan apple cake sample was dry, flat and literally the size of a quarter. The Baba Ghanoush piece was 1-1/2" wide x 1" with barely any topping on it. As for the short rib it was 3 TINY bites and the chicken salad croissant was about 3" long with hardly any chicken in it. The four 2oz.wine samples were all delicious but the extremely small food bites were a joke, I felt like I got taken for my $20. The grounds of this winery are peaceful and lovely. Enjoy the wines and ambience but save your money and skip the tasting menu. read more
