You don't find independent record stores like Fred's anymore. This is a very cool shop that offers a mix of CDs and Vinyl, and featuring various local artists and music. I arrived asking for examples of traditional Newfoundland music and was immediately directed to 2 CDs that I subsequently purchased: Rum Ragged (The Thing About Fish) and The Dardanelles (In the Spring. That's the Time). My only regret was not being around for any live music or appearances by local talent. I hope there's a next time! read more

even though i honestly dislike vinyl... sold all of mine. pain in the ass and i don't care if it sounds better than digital... truthfully; often better speakers is a major factor... vinyl takes up space, warps. scratches.... better than cassettes but i sold and donated a good 1000 pieces..... BUT... i have CARE and nostalgia for record stores.. all the trips to SAMS, DISCUS, CHEAPIES, A&M.... :))) 1970/80's.. the HIGH time for vinyl.... Fred's is very cool, but have t-shirt's... it's lazy to have a handful of shirts left, no sizes, just medium. i'll tell you this; lot of people (ok.. some people....) love to support and wear a shirt from the shop; but no sizes equals no sales.. read more

Wide variety of music and more. This last time, I picked up a CD of traditional Newfoundland songs, as well as an amazing documentary audio CD on Newfoundland history. Their locally top-selling display has a wonderful mix of CDs... when I was there this summer, it included Amelia Curran, Sean McCann, and many more. Let me begin by saying that I was a Fred's customer for several decades. I remember my folks taking me there on trip's in late 70's where i'd get a 45. Then in 80's buying tapes and records on my own right up until recently. Rarely did I walk out spending less than 100$, many times a couple hundred. One visit a couple years ago was over half a grand. I always loved the shoppe and praised it consistently. That changed recently to where I will NEVER set foot inside or do business with them again. Last Summer my buddy dropped off a box of music for me that I was trading in. On Aug 15th of last year Tony emailed me saying that he looked at it and I have a credit of X Amount. Now being from out of town I have not been back since. A couple weeks ago I contacted Tony about the credit to which he said he knew nothing about it. I provided the original email he sent and he said I needed the credit slip. I replied saying I have not been in since so I have no slip. I checked with my buddy that dropped off the box and he was not given anything. At one point it was said that "it was used or an error". After going back and forth and with another buddy dropping down to try and resolve it the answer he got was same as I did, "No Slip, No Credit". Even with the email from them saying that I have credit for my trade-in, they will not honour it. Needless to say that they have lost my business. I will never set foot inside the door again. read more

Fred's is the kind of place that makes you want to order records, tapes, CDs, and DVDs even when the material is available to purchase or download online. It's the kind of place that is a joy to visit and spend time in. Getting lost in the stacks, perusing the Staff Picks, listening to their suggested tracks. They've got everything: Rock, Jazz, Classical, World Beat, Folk, Top40, Traditional; a great selection of artists, local and global. I used to complain about Freds a little before I started checking out some of the shops in other towns. Fred's is actually pretty good for prices. Selection for my type of music has been in decline for decades now which is sad. Their vinyl selection is good, not great, but good. Their used vinyl selection is poor. Overall worth the trip downtown, best record shop in NL for sure. read more

I feel a little biased as I just about grew up at Fred's... it's like righting a review of my mom's cooking... but this is the one and only record store in the province and one of the best ones on the planet in my opinion. It's a pleasure just to be in there browsing, and they will help you find whatever you're looking for and usually turn you on to something amazing that you never heard of in the process.
