TOTAL SCAM! You can't reach anyone for help with withdrawing and financial aid. They send emails saying your classes will be dropped and then they don't drop them and charge you anyway!! Total scam and a shame to our community. read more

The websites concerning registration could be more user friendly. Because people signing up for the ILR classes(Institute for Learning in Retirement) may not be as computer savvy as others, simplicity and straight forward directions(big buttons to "click") should be a part of the process. A complete review of the registratiion process should take place. An example: A retired person attempted to sign up for a class just a few hours before the class started. She used her FCC account and made it all the way to the screen on which she would add the class to her "cart". The system would not allow her to add the class. (She had already called the registrar's office to make sure the class was not full and that she could still sign up. They are the ones who told her to log in and add the class to her cart. Easy peasy, they implied.) The starting time was getting close so she went to the class and the instructor(who is not at fault - not her job to understand the registration process) told her she could probably pay for it the next day. She was put on the attendance list. The next day she received three phone calls from the registrar's office (all rudely accusing her of taking the class without paying). She explained the problem she had had with the registration process the evening before. She offered(in the first call) to pay for the class with her credit card. In the first call she was told that she had broken the law! After the three calls they okayed her paying for the class after the fact. Being treated as if one is a scofflaw does not endure one to repeating taking classes at FCC! Some customer satisfaction training is in order, at least for the ILR classes. read more

They push courses for 55+ - beware and avoid. this WAS inviting. Signed up for a Tai Chi Course which began April 6th. Instructor had music playing, room was without AC so a fan blowing and she spoke in a very soft voice. One participant asked if she could speak up "no I have a soft voice and can't" was the reply. I could barely hear and when she turned her back to demonstratge couldn't hear at all. I left after 30 minutes. Called asked for a refund told to fill out on line form which i did. Got an email saying "too late to ask for a refund fill out this form" which I did. No response. I've spoke to 5 different people who pass on this person can help you...but no refund and no help. If the school won't have comfortable environment for a class (no aC), no audio equipment to hear and instucture who is adamant "i can't speak up" - then just apologize and refund quickly. And beware this is not an accomodating institution. And after being denied a refund and taking to 6 people...a refund offered. But they charge me for their failure to refund the course. Patrick Heline teaches adult education @ FCC, you can tell he really likes his job. My youngest daughter is taking her GED prep classes here. She has a 16 day old child, I had to bring my grandson to the college so she could feed him, the teacher cheerfully allowed us to "work around" our problem. Welcome to the Thirteenth Grade! There's a stigma about going to a community college instead of a four-year school out of high school, and despite what FCC wants you to think, they pretty faithfully live up to this stigma. Professors habitually drop assignments from the syllabus when students don't do them. A four-year school would give the students a failing grade; FCC gives them a free pass. FCC's "campus culture" is a joke. This is a commuter school, where students are more concerned with going to their classes and going home or to work. Yet FCC's faculty and administrators continue to try to force a campus culture on the apathetic student population. Twice I was an unsuspecting, unwilling attendant at an unannounced "celebration" for a sports team in the middle of the Cougar Grille. Students were forced to give up seats they'd been sitting in for an hour so that student athletes could be given a presentation that celebrated their achievements. Those students who had been reading or studying or simply eating their lunch were suddenly in the audience of a presentation they didn't care about. The student newspaper is a farce. When I was the editor of "The Commuter", I wanted to open up the newspaper to all students and make it more of a volunteer organization with a classroom element for those who wished to get college credit for their work. After all, by opening the newspaper only to those select few (read: four) students who took a Journalism class and chose to take a 2-credit Practicum class the following semester, you're really missing out on a lot of student perspectives and opinions. Heck, most students don't even know there is a school newspaper. But when I expressed this desire to the Communications department, they acted like I was nuts! Look, bottom line: It's the 13th and 14th Grade. Go in, get your ticket punched, and move on. Just try to remember that it's nothing like a four-year school, no matter how hard it tries to be. read more

College is clean, nice size classes and good cafeteria food. I do suggest going on rate my professor before you sign up for classes like you would at any college. They added a parking garage so parking is much better. read more

I have been a prospective student at FCC for the past 3 years, and I will be finishing up my time there by the end of this fall in 2013. Here are a few things I have to say about this school: 1. The college has a very good environment 2. The food there is very good, but expensive on the wallet/purse so when they're giving away free lunch, you better jump on that bandwagon. 3. The staff members are friendly 4. The classroom size is small, about no more than 20 students for 1 teacher, but be prepared to see some students drop the class, so the classroom size is going to be a little smaller during the middle of the semester. 5. The teachers are very nice and understanding, so don't hesitate to contact them for help or if you need that extra 'push' that can boost your resume or wanting to get a letter of recommendation if you're transfering to a 4-year university. 6. The academics and athletics at FCC are great!!! So if you're into basketball, baseball, volleyball, etc, then you can sign up to be on any teams here. For academics, there is an honors program, but you have to maintain a certain GPA in order to join as well as taking honors classes. 7. The teachers conduct their lectures through the overhead projector, the projector screen, and VCR/DVD player. Overall, this school is great!!! But I gave this school 3 stars because of my personal experiences with FCC, but this school is very good. read more

This review is only for the play that I saw in the Arts building. They put on a great show, Maryland, My Maryland. It taught us all how packed with history our small state is and they sang songs like the Star Spangled Banner (created in Maryland) and also songs sand by Harriet Tubman character. It was very entertaining both for me as well as all the fifth graders (we all know they can be a tough crowd). You should definitely check out the shows there! read more

I have been taking a couple of classes a year at FCC for the last three or four years. I already have a four year degree, and am retired, so I take classes through their Institute for learning in retirement (ILR). I also taught a class there in 2007 on holistic business start up. I can tell you they are very thorough in their background checks even for adjunct faculty like myself. I've enjoyed the variety of the courses for retirees. It's wonderful to learn without worrying about grades or quizzes or tests! My most recent class was called, "your corner of the world ". I think it was the best I've taken - it focused on ecology, native plants, and gardening. At our final class we planted about a dozen shrubs near the front of the college. We live nearby and frequently walk on the campus, particularly on weekends with the whole family and dogs. It's a beautiful campus and I think a wonderful asset to Fredrick County. read more

While I found the professors to be above average and the cost within sane limits, the facilities are in great need of updating. Old classrooms, damaged desks/chairs, disgusting bathrooms, etc. They hold graduation in the ancient gym. The bleachers are made for grade school kids and it is impossible not to jam your knees in the person in front of you. I can deal with the other stuff but to send these grads off in such a crappy fashion is deplorable. read more
