Being a new resident ( 2 months) in Wilmington NC. I decided to try Freddie's Restaurant in Kure Beach. From being seated by the hostess, to the waiter ( Mark) there's NOTHING to say bad about this restaurant. My wife and I decided to try the Tuesday night Pork chop special dinner. You get a family style salad, then it comes with 2 decent size pork chops with a choice of different toppings. The Toppings we chose: peaches with walnuts, and bruschetta with balsamic. We added Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes as our sides. For dessert we split a LARGE piece of Tiramisu. To finish off the dinner we enjoyed a cappuccino. My opinion, the cappuccino could've been a little hotter. Overall this was a DELICIOUS dinner at a very reasonable price. Freddie's is a gem right by the beach in Kure Beach. In order to get a table here, you must call for a reservation in advance, leave a message, and they call you back to confirm. We tried once, went without a reservation since we didn't really know the process, but made a second attempt and got a reservation. The place is very homey and unassuming, so if you are looking for quaint, cozy, or grandma's house style, this is it. Ashley was our server and she was friendly and attentive. We first watched plates coming from the kitchen to get an idea what to try. The portions are huge here. We tried a mushroom cap appetizer that was stuffed with seafood. I have never had that before, so we were pleasantly surprised how delicious these are. Next comes the family style salad in a big bowl you serve yourself included with your entrees. This was our first time here, so choosing was tough. But, we decided on chicken francese and beef tip gnocchi. So amazing. The chicken was so incredibly moist and just separated with a fork. The beef tips were tender and the gnocchi just melted in your mouth. I will say, my hubs and I ordered what we loved and then tried each other's meals too. Both amazing dishes. Be prepared for leftovers to take home. We had to have dessert, simply because cannolis are on the menu. Loved these, but next time I would skip the chocolate syrup on top. Just my personal preference here. Not saying that was bad, just not how I like them. We had a great time at Freddie's, and will be plotting my next reservation call to them. read more

I used to love this restaurant and recommend it often, but unfortunately it's been going downhill. On my visit tonight, service by Chris was attentive but the food lacked the quality it once did. Salad as usual on point, portions chix parm on special was noticeable smaller and their standard go to, pork chops were tough overcooked and their prices have gone up. Baked potato as a side came out in a too small ramekin and it was like warm. I hope this place can turn it around for the locals in the off season because at the moment it's not what it used to be. read more

Had high hopes for this place, but truly felt let down. We started off with the calamari, which was out of this world, and probably the second best thing next to the house salad. What I did like about the place was that everything was served family style. The house made dressing was absolutely delish and the mixture of the garbanzo beans, beets, tomatoes and other salad ingredients were absolutely perfect. The entrees are where things went a bit south and we lost our hope. I got the grouper special, which was served with a lobster cream sauce and angel hair (was supposed to be gnocchi, but I substituted for pasta). The grouper was cooked very well, but the pasta was quite overcooked and actually was sticking together and broke apart. The salmon dish was asked to be cooked medium and ended up being very dry, to where you felt like you needed a drink just to wash it down. The dish with the white clam sauce lacked the actual white wine, lemon and garlic taste, while this specifically did have a different play on the dish with the addition of peppers. We all seemed to agree that the peppers completely dominated the other flavors that were important flavors of this dish. Lastly, the veal parmigiana was quite good, despite being very over breaded to where it appeared soggy. Overall, will probably not return here. One last thing, the ambiance was quite lovely with that old Italian style feel and the classic oldies music. Service was timely and professional. read more

The restaurant is small but very cute. Our waiter was friendly and helpful. The girl who seated us was wouldn't even smile, she had an attitude for some reason. The food was delicious and we enjoyed the calamari alot. It was tender and tasty. I had chicken piccita and hubby had the veal Parmigiano which was also delicious. We came here for our anniversary on the recommendation of a friend for the pork chops. We were blown away by the ambience! Jenn was our bartender, absolutely amazing! Bummy and his wife were the first people we met. Super friendly and regulars who helped us with the menu. After they left, Will and another family member of the owner, Jennie, found out it was our anniversary and paid for our meals. Never have I ever experienced such generosity! Will even made a drink for us to share! Thank you Will!!! Not only is the food good, the feeling in that place is awesome! It's as close to Italian culture as i can imagine! Thank you Will, for everything that you did for our anniversary. We really appreciate it! We also found out that the owner was in the hospital. Please support this business. Went on a Monday night as we are on vacation here. Was a nice place but very small. Reservations were for 7:30 PM and we got there about 715 and had to wait. Server took a while to come over but overall she was very friendly. Food was really good. Drinks a little overpriced. Overall, our family enjoyed the meal. read more

Excellent restaurant! My wife and I had dinner here and we were pleasantly surprised by the service and old-1970 basement feel of this place. It was like eating at your grandmas house The food... pretty simple which makes it delicious. The new chefs these days believe in a hodge-podge method of cooking. No so here. The calamari was delicious and the house salad was impressive. This was no run of the mill salad. It had lots of cherry tomatoes, olives, chick peas and sliced pickled beets. Our main dishes were on point. I had the chicken cutlet parmigiana and the Mrs had chicken Francese. My only minor issue was the pasta. The penne pasta that I ordered with the chicken cutlet was all split and broken. That tells me it was previously cooked and reheated. All this leads to a soft mushy fall apart plate of pasta. We also had dessert and it was as delicious as the rest of the meal. Reservations are definitely required if you don't want to wait. The place was full at 4:30 in the afternoon. Well done guys! Food and service excellent as usual! Have had Chicken Parmesan many times but 1st time for the Italian Gumbo! It was delicious! Their portions are so large, you will always have leftovers! Each meal starts with bread service and large bowl of beet salad to share! They have specials during the off season and tonight was the chicken Parmesan for $20 and select bottles of wine for $25! What a great find in Kure Beach! The staff was very friendly - from hostess, to bartender, to waitresses. It is a smaller restaurant with a quaint ambiance so be sure to call in advance for a reservation for an easy night out. All of the food options were amazing and I'm sure you couldn't go wrong. We've probably been coming to Freddie's all the years it's been open. To be able to dine there on Christmas eve was a real treat. Our waitress, Hayley, was a dream. So kind and gracious and making sure we were doing well throughout. Starting with the salad topped with Barb's dressing is a must! We were going to buy some to take home and just realized we forgot!! Oh, no! My spouse got the veal marsala, which she loved. I was stoked for the peach walnut pork chop with amaretto glaze with a fully loaded baked potato. The chops are not to be missed! The grill flavor of the chop was excellent, but to my surprise, it was dry inside and so tough at times I could barely cut it, plus I could barely taste the glaze. I've never experienced that before - ever. I didn't say anything till after, just as a note to the chef, and Hayley said they would have brought me another. I didn't think to ask, but live and learn. For dessert I had the limoncello cake, which is to die to. Really, it is incredibly creamy and delicious. My spouse got the vanilla cheesecake, which was a massive piece that she really enjoyed. We had a wonderful dinner at Freddie's for Easter! Our server, Kelly was absolutely superb and made our first trip to Freddie's very special - it definitely won't be our last! We started with the meatballs and salad - both out of this world!! The fresh warm bread with delish herbed olive oil was too good not to finish. So the three of us decided to get eggplant Parma and the risotto special with steak and shrimp. Both were fantastic and so much food we brought it home to enjoy the next day. We also had a good bottle of Prosecco with our dinner. Although we were full we couldn't resist the limoncello cake and the chocolate caramel brownie. Yum!! This is one of my favorite restaurants on the island-the food and service are always good. I usually eat here on special occasions or when friends / family are visiting. Since it is a very small restaurant, reservations are recommended. And if they don't pick up when you call, just leave them a message and someone will call you back. I've been here several times in groups ranging 4 to 6 people. If you have a small party of two people and all of the table/ booths are full, you can ask If there are any seatings at the bar (small, limited seating). The grilled pork chops are a must- they're huge and flavorful. You get to choose from a list of toppings to go on the pork chops (any of the grilled items)-My favorite is the Freddy's special, the balsamic sauce with cherry peppers. All of the grilled items are served with salad, bread, and your choice of pasta or side. I recommend getting pasta- I like their spaghetti with meat marinara sauce. Just know they do not make their pasta from scratch. The bread is served with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar dip. I've had better olive oil, but the bread is good. Recently, I tried their grill salmon, usually cooked medium unless specified. It had a great seared crispy exterior and was cooked well. If I didn't choose pasta as my side, then I had an option of either baked potato or green beans. Salad dressing is made in-house. I recommend getting the salad dressing on the side, unless you like drenched salad. The salad usually has chickpeas, sliced beets, tomatoes, red onion, lettuce, and parmesan cheese. It served family style, in a big bowl, for everyone to share. When we ate here in the hot humid summer, it was around 77 degrees inside, but they had several ceiling fans running. I'll admit that I can be a bit picky when it comes to Italian food, so I am overjoyed to say that my husband and I loved our meals at Freddie's last night. We are currently renting a condo at Kure Beach and the owner of the condo recommended Freddie's as a "must visit." I am so glad we listened! Although it was a weeknight in the off-season, we still called ahead to reserve a table, which ended up being a good decision because when we arrived at 7pm the host said it was a 45 minute wait to diners without reservations. The restaurant itself is on the small side and a little more casual than I originally expected but still felt very cozy and intimate with checkered tablecloths. Despite how busy the restaurant was, it was still very easy to hold a conversation and to easily hear one another. Our waitress (I believe her name is Natalie) was attentive and genuinely friendly. In addition to beverages, the meal started with complementary bread and family style house salad. We loved the bread, and I really enjoyed the freshness of the salad with their addition of beets and chickpeas and the house Italian dressing, but James wasn't as much of a fan (to be fair, he isn't much of a salad person). We also ordered the fried calamari with marinara. The calamari was so tender that it almost melted in our mouths and it was fried perfectly, not greasy or heavy. We loved the marinara, too. For our entrees, James decided on the seafood alfredo which comes with shrimp, crab, and mushrooms, and I chose the shrimp scampi over fettuccine noodles. The scampi was light and lemony, without being too tart or oily, and the shrimp were soooo delicious. As good as the scampi was, the seafood alfredo was hands down the winner of the evening in our books. It will probably go down as one of our favorite dishes ever, which is pretty amazing considering how much we dine out. The sauce was creamy and decadent without feeling overly heavy, and there was fresh crab in every bite. Also, the portions are huge. Our only disappointment of the night was the chocolate cake. The cake itself had a gummy texture and the frosting was super thick and fudge-like. I am willing to bet that it was just an off night with this item and that it usually tastes better - we might have been more disappointed if we weren't still quite full from our delicious dinner. All in all, Freddie's gets an easy 5 stars from me, and I look forward to visiting again. read more

Stopped into Freddie's after meeting two ladies at the Courtyard Marriott who raved about their meal. I arrived on a Saturday night snd the sign at the door said "sold out" but limited seating at the bar. I went in to check and it took me a few to get the attention of a waiter, who checked for an opening at the bar. Thankfully there was just one seat. I checked the menu and the bartender said many of their pasta dishes had cheese )-'ya'll know I'm dairy free) so picked out the ribeye with mashed potatoes. The meal started with bread that was phenomenal with an oil, balsamic dressing, an herb mix and salad with beets and garbanzo beans. Loved loved the bread. By this time the bar cleared and my meal finally arrived. To be honest, I think I should have ordered pasta as the potatoes were bland but the ribeye was nice and juice. Could of used a finishing touch of salt but tasted good. Will put this on my return list when the family comes next summer! read more

We had to eat here after smelling the amazing food from the beach for days! First - everything on the menu is shareable, family size. Wish the menu called this out because we had a full dinner for TWO nights with everyone ordering their own plate. Overall, the food was good: creamy pesto sauce & calamari were AMAZING! Chicken Marsala was bland but nothing else to call out like that. Service was good & setting was nice, not overly spaced so if can plan ahead, it was nice to have a reservation. The bread was very good though--hot and tasty. The Chicken Parmesan was a large portion, but it was average to me. Then again, it's probably tough to get a decent Chicken Parmesan at the beach. I picked up from here because there was a two-hour wait. The atmosphere was way better than I expected. Superb service, decor, and cleanliness. So, big plus there.
