There's not many local studios that offer tap for 3-4 year olds so that was one of my deciding factors for DancED. When researching I also stayed up way too late one night watching video clips of their performances (like I said...I LOVE dance) and was hooked. It reminded me so much of my dance studio from South Florida. My daughter has been in Miss Erin's Creative Dance class since September now and DancED has proven to be everything (and more) I was looking for in a dance studio. At first I worried that one teacher couldn't handle a rowdy group of 10ish pre-schoolers, but after attending this week's parent watch week was in awe with the way Erin has them all under control. I really like that Erin (and it appears most of the other teachers) have a lot of experience teaching little ones. At Baby Take a Bow my daughter mostly had really young ballerinas teaching her who had absolutely no experience dealing with 2 & 3 year olds. And it's a lot more difficult to control a group of pre-schoolers than it is to do a pirouette. The class consists of 20 minutes of tap followed by 20 minutes of ballet. They are working on all the basic tap (shuffles) and ballet (first, second position) moves. My daughter seems to really enjoy it, especially the tap portion of the class. Anything really noisy makes her happy. There are typically 3 consecutive classes going on at the same time and I think she loves checking out the "big girl classes" even more than taking class herself. We're just about to order their costumes for the June recital, which I have to admit I"m excited for. I was a bit bummed to hear that the little ones have their own 45 minute version of the recital, although my husband and I'm sure other parents were thrilled to hear that news. I may just have to go on my own to watch those big kids dance. DancED also have a very busy calendar of events going on all year long. Everything from father/daughter fun nights to princess camps to circus weeks. The owner does a great job showing off pics of their fabulous dancers throughout the studio and on facebook. Speaking of which I'm a bit surprised that the owner (I believe Nancy?) hasn't come by the class to introduce herself to her newest group of dancers, but I'm sure we'll meet her in due time since I hope my daughter will be dancing her way thru DancED for many years to come. * http://www.yelp.com/biz/starland-deerfield **http://www.yelp.com/biz/baby-take-a-bow-winnetka

We didn't want to wait that long to pursue her interest so I quickly did some research and moved her to Dreams. We have been doing classes now for 5 months...she has moved up 3 levels and about to do a pre-team class this coming fall! The amount she has learned in such a short time has been amazing to see. Coach Paige is fantastic! Andrew, Amy and Arthur have also made it such a positive experience. Highly recommend!!

Located in a office court off of West Lake Ave., this is a former factory converted into a gym. The conversion is not quite complete in my opinion. There is a kids fun gym and another, larger and more sophisticated, gym with advanced equipment. We were in the smaller gym and it looks rough around the edges. (see photos) Still, it was fun for the kids. They accommodated a group of thirty 5 & 6 year olds and managed the group very well, God bless their souls. I found it somewhat disturbing when we received a birthday invitation from the place and it had a waiver sheet folded and tucked into the pre-printed invite card from Dreams. The waiver, which had to be signed by a parent and witnessed by a gym employee, had a lengthy list of various and increasingly gruesome potential injuries possible, ranging from simple bruises to torn muscles, fractures and paralysis. Strange we did not have guests need to sign one for a party at International Gymnastics. Seeing the potential dangers and risks, I was tempted to send in my fearless Stunt Baby to substitute for my older son at the party, but my 5 year old handled it just fine. There were two instructors who had the kids do warmups and run a basic obstacle course, followed by extensive play in their sponge cube pit. They also had a Tumble Track trampoline next to the pit for the more adventurous jumpers. The instructors (Nicki and Vicki) did a great job keeping track of the kids and making sure they played safely. At the same time, the gym leaves a lot to be desired. The sides of the sponge pit are not padded like at International Gymnastics. Columns in the gym are crudely padded with folded mats wrapped in duct tape. The truck bay doors are covered in large sheets of clear plastic. There are stacks of insulation panels piled up on the sides above the party rooms. The condition of the padded floor, carpeting, mats, and the sponge cubes even, shows a significant amount of wear. The party room itself was a bit crowded but fit 30 kids at a series of long tables. A second party room down the hall allows them to have one party after another while alternating rooms. Therefore, we were not rushed to get out promptly at the designated end time. Certainly a good time but as a family we're sticking with International Gymnastics for classes and parties in the future.

The hours are extremely flexible being open from 4am-12am most days of the week and I really love that they have a big kids club for parents to be able to have childcare during their workouts. All the staff I've interacted with have always been very polite. Now for the not so good. Most hours of the day, this place is crowded. Certain machines that are extremely popular are very hard to get access to which requires me to wait around for the machine I need. I also get approached numerous times by people asking me how many sets I have left or if they can work in with me. There are a lot of people in their late teens/very early 20s that use this gym as a social club. They will utilize the machines together and stay on for over 30 minutes not allowing other members to have a turn. A lot of people do not wipe their equipment and there seems to be no signage or enforcement to encourage people to do so. I have also noticed that weights don't get put back in the correct spaces or at all in some cases with a few wobbly weight benches and divots in the floors next to the weight racks that you can easily trip in. I love the recovery room and red light therapy but I really wish that yoga was a part of the regular membership instead of requiring an upgrade. The locker room doesn't provide hair dryers, towels or any hygienic items as other gyms do. I'm continuing to use Vasa as of now, but I'm keeping my options open for other gyms in the area that would be less crowded.

I prefer a lot of cardio when it comes to my workouts and whenever I try Dailey Method my mind starts to wander and then I realize I'm not even doing the move correctly...and there goes my workout. When my nanny called in sick today I found myself wondering what I would do with my 2 year old for 5 hours until his sister was ready to be picked up at school. Friends mentioned they were taking their 2 year olds to the Dailey Method while they did a class so I figured I'd give it another shot. If the workout wasn't any good at least my son would have fun for an hour playing with the other kids. I haven't left him on his own very often so admittedly I was a bit nervous about it, but figured this would be good prep for camp this summer. I was so impressed with the kids club. It's a small room, but had everything my son would want to keep him entertained for an hour: trains, a kitchen & (yes) a TV. Elizabeth was the caretaker in the room and she was very warm and the kids took to her instantly. In fact, when I went to pick up my son an hour later he didn't want to go home and was giving Elizabeth hugs. Sooo if you're looking for somewhere to workout with good children THIS is it. The class itself was fine. It was a Dailey Basics class so easier than most. Debbie, the instructor, played great music, had complete control of the class and did her best to make sure we were all doing the moves correctly. I did find my mind wandering a lot during the class & feel like I didn't actually get a workout today, but that's based on my own preferences & not the class itself. If you like bar classes you would likely be a fan of Debbie's class. I was excited to see that they offer spinning here. That's one class I'd definitely be interested in trying since it combines cardio with body sculpting. So perhaps I"ll be back for that...and for my little one to visit his new friend & toys in the kids room.
