I am only rating the gym, locker room and customer service. 1. Customer service: from day one I have received great service. A warm welcome at the door every time, and always willing to help. I even forgot a hair tie once and a lady in the art room cut me some stretchy material and I made a pony tail holder. That was awesome. 2. Gym: they have a awesome lifting area. I do HITT workouts and there is plenty of room. Only problem I have is: no slam balls, and drinking fountain is no where to be found downstairs (bring water). 3. Locker room: clean, provide blow dryers. Only problem is showers. Takes a while for water to get hot, stalls too small with only a curtain that doesn't really cover you and you run into it when taking a shower which grosses me out. All in all I am happy, and would recommend you checking this gym out. read more

Howard, the president of this YMCA, publicly lobbied Northbrook fighting the $10 minimum wage, speaking on behalf of the YMCA. This is coming from an organization whose mission is to promote social justice. How could someone with this responsibility act in disregard for the lowest paid workers and look himself in the mirror? I'd never support such an organization. As far as the facility, I'm not impressed. The gym is bare bones, about what you'd expect. The pool is nice enough and clean. None of this makes supporting this institution worth the moral sacrifice of continuing a membership with a board that works to dismantle basic worker rights. read more

BEWARE OF YMCA'S SUMMER CAMP!!!!!!! There should be no second chances on the well-being of my child especially if your camp is advertising on zero tolerance for bullying. There is no swapping camps or returning at this point. We will be withdrawing my son from your summer program and we, as a family, will no longer attend the YMCA. We are heartbroken that we (having grown up as YMCA children) entrusted our precious son to you for a fun summer experience and what he received was an emotional and mental scar. We will be reporting this incident to DCFS and also contacting a lawyer for child neglect and abuse. We will make reports on the continous name calling, pushing, the harassment in swimming pool water, locker room, and soccer field which happened within a 5 day time span. Up to this point, no proactive action has been taken from YMCA as an institution that promotes a safe, fun, and healthy environment. Everything my 7 year old child went through was the opposite of what you advertise and we will make sure other parents are aware of this. We are ashamed to have trusted your facility with our children. Going to the YMCA where good is brought and given, has been a tradition for decades in our family, supporting YMCA facilities in California and Illinois. You feed off th good in family's hearts. Your corrupt and avaricious decision to employ young teenagers , some 11 years old (!!!), to instruct and keep safe our children results in serious harm, this time harm done to my child. My 8 year old son was bullied by the Child Care staff in the X Zone. It was staffed with teenagers who are not qualified to watch children. The staff turned off his game while he was playing it, called him a dog and a baby, and threw balls at him until he screamed and cried. My husband was a few feet away and no one came to get him. Howard Schultz, the CEO, made the decision to continue to allow these teenagers to supervise children. I do not believe children are safe at this facility, and I hope you learn from my child's hard lesson. Years later, we are still treating my child from the trauma of this event. read more

I've had an on and off membership with the YMCA since I was in high school. The YMCA used to be much more basic but it got the job done. However, in the past couple of years they made a bunch of renovations and currently are doing more improvements. I typically sign up for a membership during the winter months since it's too cold to run outside. Usually in the month of January, they waive the "joiner's fee" to encourage people (especially new year's resolutioners) to join which is a great idea. I know they have a lot of programs for kids and a bunch of fitness classes. I can't attest to any of their classes since I only come to use the treadmill. The Y has your standard pool, racquet ball courts, basketball courts, fitness center, weight room, locker rooms/showers, sauna, etc. Everyone working there, especially people manning the front desk, are very friendly and greet you when you enter and leave. Another great perk is their cancellation policy. I know some gyms make you jump through hoops as to discourage people from quitting but at the Y, their process is so easy. If I remember correctly, all I had to do was talk to the front desk, let them know I wanted to quit, and then the membership was cancelled by the end of the month. If you're looking for a clean, basic gym or a family oriented rec center, definitely check the YMCA out. read more

You cannot beat the price: $70 per family per month. That includes group fitness, yoga, childcare, men's/women's/family locker room, Olympic size pool, free (family) events, plus all the equipment. We loved one swim instructor and we underwhelmed by another. That's really our only gripe. There are so many programs for all ages, and at very reasonable prices. We plan on doing camp this summer. for our four year old. I hear that my son's friends love it, and you can sign up week by week. I'm reading a few reviews that say customer service is poor. I found quite the opposite. Employees were very understanding of our need to terminate membership for awhile then rejoin (and no fees). Our family is very glad to be members of the NSYMCA! read more

Reasons the Y works for me: 1. The membership is inclusive, diverse, and reflects the community. Young/old, all backgrounds, able-bodied and disabled are welcome. 2. Values of the Y match those of our family. It's a non profit and doesn't pretend to the East Bank Club or the overpriced Lifetime Athletic. No snobbery on display. 3. Staff is warm and professional. 4. Only place I regularly see my neighbors. 5. While the facility is old, it is cleaner than most professional clubs I've belonged to. Fitness center gets the job done. 6. Spin classes with Terry are better than Peloton 7. Opens at 5 AM. Perfect for commuters. read more

The hot tub is always broken it's latterly a tin can the pool is chipped and when somthing needs to be fixed it takes weeks sometimes months horrible hours careless lifeguards it's stupid that u have to pay for a towel service it should come with your membership that u pay for the spa is moldy and is rarely cleaned unless u say somthing like multiple times their lockers r wooden and some look very chipped the hot tub can't even withstand a normal temperature read more

We were members here for two months and loved it. The front staff were usually friendly. I tried a couple of classes and they were good. Loved the body pump and the spin was just okay. I LOVED the workout room and lifting equipment. The kids club was amazing. The staff in there were so amazing and great care givers. I definitely didn't take advance of all that this location has to offer but I liked being a member there. We moved which is why we aren't still members. read more

I guess right around the age of 30 I started noticing that my metabolism hit a brick wall; Superdawg and Dunkin' Donuts just weren't going to be a part of my lifestyle for much longer; my morning routine of cigarettes and coffee was going to end soon (*sigh*). My wife and doctor conspired to guilt me into living as long as possible - bastards! Anyhow... as my ticker marched towards the 4 decade mark, it really was critical that I start exercising and eating right and all that stuff. For a heavy dude like me, places like Bally's just blow. The one near work that I frequented was always hell-of crowded and they are perpetually hounding you to buy supplements and personal training. Screw that - I just want to get on a treadmill or elliptical trainer for 30 minutes - just leave me alone. My employer was paying for my membership so I had to put up with it but secretly I seethed anytime one of those Bally's people tried to engage me in conversation - bastards! After a few years of that, my employer stopped participating with Bally's and they implemented a program where you have to pay for a gym membership anywhere and they reimburse you for part of it once a quarter - that was the excuse I needed to kick Bally's to the curb. When I was a kid, my folks had a family membership to the Lattof YMCA in Des Plaines and my wife and I also had a membership that we allowed to lapse after some time. I figured with work subsidizing my membership, I'll join up again and we could sign up the kids for swim lessons... I was signing up use of the equipment. The membership allows you to use any YMCA in the US I believe. This benefit is how I came to make the North Suburban YMCA my gym. NS YMCA happens to be my 'local' YMCA [in distance from work] and the kids swim at Lattof which is closer to home and my wife works out at a Y in Schaumburg - see how that works? All of the facilities deserve their own review but since I work out at the NS YMCA, this is a review for only that facility - ok? To begin with, I respectfully disagree with Robb D's review from 2007. Maybe they had different people at the front desk back then but I find that the ladies at the front desk are invariably polite. I don't swipe my card like the other NS YMCA members [b/c my card says Lattof YMCA] so I need to physically show my card - sometimes they have to verify that my membership is still active... it's barely an inconvenience. Most of the time, I just need to flash my card and smile. Sure, the facilities are a little dated - that's perfect for me!! The locker rooms are not near the door necessarily... Robb calls it a labyrinth which is maybe an extreme way of saying you have to go down some stairs to get to the locker room. Admittedly there are some older folks there than you might find at other flashier gyms - there happens to be more families here too - so what?! The workout cardio-equipment is newish and nice + they have all the weight training equipment you need. You can get a workout and then shower in peace. They have a pool too which I haven't used yet. They have racquetball courts, basketball courts, steam room, whirlpool... you get the picture. The best part of it (for me) is the lack of attitudes - no attitudes from the staff or other members - it makes for a welcoming environment to work-out in. I've been here at all hours and it is not usually crowded. If you have kids, they have all kinds of activities for them too - art classes, dance, swimming, karate, etc. So - if you are getting older and you need to get fit (don't kid yourself - you are getting older), consider the local YMCA. Honestly I can't say enough good things about this place. I think it is a great value for what you pay. The group exercise classes are well-run and challenging. The childcare is excellent [not sure about the experience that a previous reviewer had. I think that is not the norm.] I have an 8 month old and they are so great with him. I wouldn't be able to afford childcare and a gym membership and it's really awesome that it's included in the fee. I am extremely happy with what I have experienced at this club so far. read more

This Y is huge. They have a big reception desk, three or four separate racquetball court rooms, pool, sauna/hot tub, several dance studios, small gyms, a Spinning room, a weight room with free weights and machines surrounded by a walking/running track, and a cardio area with plenty of treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes. They even have an art room for kids. The gym recently remodeled the entrance, locker rooms, bathrooms, and halls. These places are now beautiful. It's usually pretty clean, and stocked with soap, lotion, and mouthwash in the locker rooms, and paper towels, cleaning solution, and paper cups (for water fountains) in the workout areas. Most of the staff is very friendly. I love the Zumba and muscle conditioning classes because the instructors are enthusiastic and make working out fun. I go here during the week between 6 and 8pm, and have never had to wait for a cardio machine. One of two things that bother me about this particular Y is the frequent spelling and grammar mistakes on printed marketing materials and signs. It's not uncommon for signs in the gym to be misspelled, or have an extra apostrophe here or there. The other thing that bothers me is a recent policy change. Being a member of another Y in Chicago, I used to be able to visit other Y's, like this one in Northbrook any time I wanted. This was big for me. Since I work in Northbrook and live in Chicago, the commute can be long. To help be deal with the traffic by missing it is terrific. Metro Chicago just changed their policy to limit members of other Y's to using their facilities 12 times each year. Since Chicago changed the policy, the North Suburban Y altered theirs to match. So now I have to decide if I want to keep my regular membership at the Y across the street from where I live, or transfer it to the Y closer to work. read more

This is slightly above mediocre. The basketball gym is nice, popular, and always available. They offer tons of classes and all fitness classes are free to members. The day care is also free for up to 2 hours per day. The membership fee for a family is less than $100 which is a good deal but the other commenters are correct in that it is a maze inside. They have to have a ton of wasted space as the hallways lead to no where. They have a lot of free weights and a sufficient amount of cardio but not enough 'machines'. The commenter about the ladies working the front desk is somewhat true. read more

This is absolutely the most disorganized facility I have ever been to. If I could give them negative stars I would! I signed up for summer camp 2012 for my 8 year old. It was a nightmare! Will absolutely find other options going forward. First of all, the forms were a mess! The date and age requirement information on the front summary page was not the same as the description within the booklet. No one in the front desk can help. They ask each other, call someone and leave a voice mail, then maybe get back to you. Then, once I have registered several weeks of camps including after child care, on a hunch, I asked for a summary of what was registered. They were unable to provide a printout. I received a handwritten document. There were numerous mistakes! I have half day camps scheduled on the same week as all day camps. It was not what I have on my sign up form. Next, we decided to spend some time with our son at home, and decided to cancel the last week of camp registered. We called the YMCA the weekend before. The staff there did not notify us we cannot cancel, instead, we were asked to leave a message with Debbie Spring. The next day, still prior to the start of camp we followed up again with the YMCA staffs and was asked to fill out a form to cancel. No response or notification of denial from Debbie Spring or anyone from the facility. When we followed up once again, Debbie Spring finally responded after camp has ended and notified us we cannot cancel camp. When we pointed out, as the notification was not provided in a timely manner, preventing us the opportunity of attending the camp, a refund is in order, she did not respond at all. I then arrived at the YMCA personally to speak to her boss, Don Langley. He promised me he would take care of the situation as long as I provided the documentation of the e-mail communications with Debbie. He went on vacation for 3 weeks. When I followed up later, I was notified by the YMCA, he no longer works there. I have since contacted Howard Schultz and requested assistance as it has been almost 3 month and issues has not been resolved. It's been over a week since I notified him. Absolutely no response!!! No wonder the facility is such a mess. These people are horrible from top to bottom. Save your time and steer clear of this place! read more

I've been a member at this YMCA for over 20 years. At this point I'm retired, and my secondary health insurance has the 'Silver Sneakers' feature, which means I can go to many health clubs at no charge, including some YMCA's a little further away, but not this one! I pay quite a lot considering I only want to use the fitness center, no classes, pool or anything else. But my biggest gripe is the lack of maintenance in the fitness center, on the weight machines. One was removed recently rather than being repaired, and others need adjustment to be usable. They're heavily used, so why are they neglected?! read more

This Y has undergone some major renovation and it looks and feels 100% better compared to a year ago. It is not very big and has a nice neighborhood feel to it. The locker room is brand new. I also like the variety of fitness classes and the pool is also not very crowded and seems to always have spot open unless it's at family swim time. I especially enjoyed the yoga class! I highly recommend this Y and will come here for the years to come. read more

Dropped my 2 year old and 3 month old off at the kids zone. I told the girl (maddie) that my daughter will cry but she will relax if you console her. She said "she's one of those"...yea, a two year old! 10 minutes later I get a call to come get my kids and find my daughter standing by herself crying while maddie just stared at her. I had told her there was an iPad in my bag and snacks. No attempt was made to calm her. I wouldn't leave my kids there again. Jasmine at the front desk was great though. read more

I remember I used to love this place. It had a place dedicated to older kids and even had video games! However, I have grown to hate this place with a burning passion. I was in the X-zone with some supervisors, (teens) and I was playing some Mario and was trying to tell them about how to get infinite lives, and they didn't, so I got a bit pissed. Probably shouldn't have done that, but we can move on. Not to them! After that, they teased me, harassed me, and tried to make me feel better and bribe me to not tell my parents so that they would keep their job. Not that it mattered anyway! After having a meeting with the staff, they decided that all three would keep their jobs. They would make no attempt to remove them. Not only that, but after our meeting we got a response from the owner on google maps saying that I was LYING. I am still disgusted, even though it happened two years ago. NEVER take your kids there. They will be harassed and teased, and then bribed with pretzel sticks to not tell you. Even if they do, they'll make all of the bad things happen to YOU. read more

Worst customer service Ever! The people that work at this club including management are very rude and clearly have never owned their own business or taken classes in customer service. Alfredo is right - the people at the desk are much friendlier than they were in the past. The facility is large (full size gym, many exercise rooms, lots of cardio machines, weight machines, pool, and I haven't even tried the track downstairs or the free weight room). I love the kick butt classes on Saturday (Linda) and Sunday at about 9am. Great, great workouts!! I have friends that love the yoga classes and boot camp class. The place is not flashy, but you almost never have to wait for a machine, except sometimes on Saturday morning. Good deal if you have a family membership here, and you actually have more than 1 person that uses the facility. read more

Overall, this is a pretty schotty facility. First off, the staff here is ridiculous. They treat you like a child. The counter women seem to have some vendetta against men. They make you show your card every time, as if you are entering the pentagon as opposed to a second rate, converted bomb shelter. It's almost as if the main women at the counter thinks she is your mother (she is not my mother, by the way). Once you get into a place, its like being in a labyrinth. Its about a 3/4 mile walk to the locker room. When you arrive in the locker room get ready to be surrounded by characters. From a 98 year old fella who sings the bum bum song, to the traditional 'naked guy' on the scale, this locker room has it all. The cardio room has new equipment, and is pretty nice. Beautiful color TV sets grace all of the treadmills, however don't plan on skippin any rope..My friend Jude (who participates in a boxing training regiment) says "there is a 5-15 minutes of wait time, [and] the ropes are [expletive deleted]." The basketball games here are also joke. A bunch of 40 something men, participate in the lunch run. Think people don't play 'shirts and skins' anymore? Think again. It is required here. This run can only be described as a 'homoerotic blend of hacks and has-beens." One plus is they have towels available for purchase. They also stock hair gel, shampoo, shave cream, and lotion in the men's locker room. Lacks a sufficient amount of toilets. read more
