The corn was good. I'd come back for that alone. This little cubbyhole is located in the side of a gas station next to a boba tea stall. While I'm getting tea why not gone get some food. I got a 2 pierce catfish basket, honestly I wasn't impressed. For $12.99 I would expect some thicker filets. The batter was crispy but it needed something like salt. There was some seasoning sprinkled on it but it reminds me all the mom and pop chicken places sprinkling seasoning on the chicken to make it their signature. But the seasoning doesn't add anything special. I'm sure the reader can think of a few of this chicken places in Oak Cliff. It's cool, to each his own. Oh and the fries weren't shown any love. But hey, Obviously there's a lot of people that like them because there was constant customers in and out. And they have great reviews. The waitress was attractive and nice. Best fried chicken I've had in a long time. They don't make the chicken until you order it, and it comes out piping hot!!! It is crispy, juicy and oh so flavorful! We also tried the fried corn on the Cobb, it ROCKS! I had fried okra, and it is top notch, and the husband had French fries and he loved them. The service was so nice, Brandon who I think is the owner was so polite, and the staff was friendly. The ambiance is not why you go here, it is inside a gas station, but if you are looking for down home, great tasting fried chicken, hurry to Freckles! So, I ordered my husband a 3-piece dark (we were given 4 pieces) and myself livers (I don't even know how many livers there were - lots and lots), fries, and greens. I ate and ate and ate, I shared with my two dogs, and I still had to throw away some livers (and I don't have a small appetite). My husband ate all 4 pieces of his chicken and really enjoyed it. I know, I know it's in a gas station. I don't like places in a gas station but you gotta start somewhere. Luckily for these guys they are killing it! The chicken was super legit. Great seasoning and crispy. Talk about delicious. It reminded me to Rudy's chicken where you think they sprinkle crack on it cause it's super addicting. While I do think Rudy's is still king Freckles is really good. Fries are plentiful and kinda soggy but that seasoning just elevates everything. I wish they would put more seasoning on everything cause it's so damn good. Reasonably priced and very very friendly staff that even recommended the freckles corn. We stumbled upon this gem when we met up with a friend. Not only did the sweet woman who works as a cashier walk me through the process and what they offer, but the gentleman who runs the business also came out and personally asked us how the food was and wished us a nice evening. This man also took food out to cars, chatted with us about where we're from, and genuinely cared about our experience. We have been back again and bought food to eat as leftovers. In my quest for the best fried chicken around I decided to take a chance on a newer fried chicken place closer to home. I had stumbled across "Freckles" when looking through DoorDash late one evening and made up my mind to try them soon. Little did I know it'd be the very next day. So when I arrived at the location I wasn't impressed at all. It was a gas station convenience store that had a small kitchen attached inside. However since I was already there, I might as well give it a whirl. So o wandered inside and was greeted with a sign at the register that stated all chicken is made to order and so there will be a bit of a wait time. So I placed my order for a 4 piece wing as well as fried corn. After 15 minutes of waiting the nice owner handed me my food and I headed back to my car to take the food home. And then that's when my nose smelled the chicken... my stomach began grumbling and the juices in my mouth started flowing and before I could even start the car I decided I'd take a taste. 15 minutes later I had liked the bones clean and the cob of corn was just a husk of its former self. The owner has a spectacular gift of fried chicken as well as his fried corn. Honestly all I can say is go to Freckles, and take a chance on it. I was so tired of the traditional places like Popeyes, KFC, Church's, William's, etc., but I wanted some fried chicken! I was too lazy to drive to Dallas/Oak Cliff, so what was I going to do to satisfy my chicken craving? I checked out "good chicken places" on Yelp, and saw that "Freckles" was getting great reviews! I had never heard of this place, so I was anxious to see what the buzz was about. I traveled the 12 minutes it took to get to the location off of Oates in Mesquite (Texas), and saw that it was inside of a gas station, with no drive thru. Usually a good sign of some good food! I entered and there was no line (yes!) and I was greeted immediately. I don't know if the gentleman was the proprietor, but he was courteous and made the food as well. He got my order right (yay!) and the food was made to order. The restaurant was clean, the tables, were clean, and if I wasn't bringing the food back to my family, I would have eaten it right there. I told the gentleman that it was my first time, but if it was good I would be back. He quipped, "Okay, see you next week!" A confident cook. We laughed and I was on my way home. The chicken smelled delicious, and I couldn't drive fast enough to get home and try it. I love when the food smells good before you take your first bite. My husband was hungrier than a bear coming out of hibernation, so this food better be good......we loved it! My husband would give it five stars! It was a little spicy for my taste, and I wasn't given an option of flavors, but if you like your chicken with a little heat, this is perfect for you! I had to gobble up plenty of pickles to help my chicken go down but they were good too. I heard about Freckles on IG or FB; I can't remember. My customer service was good. Everyone was nice and helpful. I had a couple of questions bc I've never eaten there before and they answered them. I ordered a two piece white. It came with fries. The chicken is made to prefer so there was a 15-20 minute wait. When I got home about 5 minutes later, my chicken was still really hot and DELICIOUS. It was sooo good. Hot, crispy, and SEASONED. The fries were disappointing. They were cold, soggy, and slightly undercooked. However, I read the corn was good so next time I go back which will be TODAY, I'll get the corn and not the fries. The chicken was good and definitely worth the wait. read more
