Do not go here unless you like stylists who do whatever they want. My stylist was so aggressive with my hair, pulling it extremely hard as washing, nearly burning my scalp when she blew it out, and absolutely hacking away at my hair after I spent years growing out a similarly bad cut from another salon. she was not technical, and just started cutting with no measuring or precision, my front layers aren't even the same length. She was not warm or friendly and acted as if she didn't want to be there. She cut way too much off of my hair and I cried as soon as I got in my car. She did not listen to what I wanted and the treatment I got done did not do anything. I've gotten glosses at multiple salons over the past 10 years and whatever she did did absolutely nothing in fact my hair feels more dry at the roots than it did before. Please, please, please save yourself the hassle and find or hold out for a better salon in the area. - update.. time has passed and I am fully comprehending that she chopped off half of my hair. I went to Frayedberry for the first time this week. I wanted to get "northern lights" inspired highlights in my hair, and they turned out AWESOME. This was the first time I've done anything like this and I had a great experience. Shelby was my stylist, and she was great. She was patient and helped me pick out colors for my hair, and when the first application didn't turn out dark enough, she happily went back to mix the colors again and reapply. It was a long process but I'm super happy with it. AND--it was reasonably priced!! I definitely plan to go back again and look forward to trying out new colors and cuts. read more

I came in to get balayage and a trim on my long, layered hair. Ashley was my stylist and when I showed her pictures of what I wanted on my hair (originally a subtle brown ombre grown out on black hair), she asked questions to clarify the color and length I was hoping to achieve. She made me feel confident that she had a ton of experience and knew exactly how to do my hair. When she first rinsed out the toner, she blow-dried the front section of my hair and asked if I liked the color or wanted it darker. I asked to make it darker, so she added more toner and had me wait a little while longer as it processed. The next time she rinsed it, the color was perfect, exactly what I wanted. She did an awesome job on my color and added some layers without taking off too much length (which was great because I want to keep growing my hair longer). Ashley was also friendly and easy to talk to, and I love the decor of the salon. They also offer coffee and have magazines to read while you wait. read more

Even if you say you're "FREAKING OUT" after the third snip. (Yes, why didn't I just get up and walk out?) Super cute place. Super nice girls. (Well, I thought...) Just don't go back in sobbing, hoping for a sincere apology or some sliver of compassion... because then, apparently, you just have "attitude." Certainly don't expect them to say, "Oh, Amy! I'm so sorry! What can I do?" because that sure as hell won't happen. So. They will give you your money back, but they'll be fairly snarky about it and then they'll explain all of the reasons why their chopping off four years worth of your hair is All. Your. Fault. This is the first time in six years that I've sobbed over a haircut. I will certainly be sticking with the Devachan-trained stylists who actually do know, when they say they know, how to cut curly hair. Lesson. Learned. (Again.) Still Sobbing. read more

I went to Frayedberry two months ago and got the worst cut and color ever. I showed my stylist a picture of a balayage and ended up getting thick stripes of platinum blonde all throughout my hair. She left the bleaching mixture on my hair for 40 minutes, turning half of my hair almost white. My hair has been breaking off like crazy ever since. She also cut my bangs very thick and short. Some of my bangs were less than an inch long and after two months have hardly grown out. read more

I live about 60 miles from Hagerstown and had been checking reviews of salons in the surrounding area for a few weeks. I decided to check out Frayedberry because the beauticians all have stylish hair and some very happy customers. Shelby cut and colored my hair and I love it! The salon was so hip, the stylist cute and all the reviews I read beforehand and pics I saw online lead me to believe this would be an amazing outcome... It was anything but. If you want solid orange hair with grey undertones, go for balayage with Shelby. I don't know if she took the "prelightener" off too quickly or forgot to go back in and add some dark back, but I thought I was getting balayged with a beautiful blonde and instead I looked like I soaked my head in Sun In and had some grey/blue chunks strewn throughout. A total and utter disaster! Spend the extra $50 at Sagittarius to get your color done right. You don't want to end up like me having to pay triple what I did to have the mess they created, corrected. read more

I have very mixed feelings about this salon. A friend and I went in last week to get fresh cuts and color before a big event we were attending and she walked away thrilled and gorgeous-looking and I walked away in pain and very unhappy. Shelby was my friend's stylist and did a great job on her dark pink ombre bob - the cut and color were beautiful. Kayla was my stylist and I had a much different experience. I've had a lavender pixie cut for almost a year now and have never had any problems with having my roots lightened or colored. The appointment started off fine - we discussed what I wanted (just a trim and freshen up of the color) and she got to work on lightning my roots. After about 40 minutes she washed the bleach off and decided to put another round of bleach on my ENTIRE HEAD, which is where the appointment went downhill. My roots were still SLIGHTLY yellow, which I really feel could have been fixed with a toner not another round of bleach. Once Lightener #2 was on I felt very forgotten for about 25 minutes. Kayla hung out on the computer, helped other customers, but never once came back to check on me. Eventually another stylist came and washed the bleach out of my hair, at which point I was able to them how much pain I was in and Kayla took back over. She put a toner on my hair, which stung but I handled, and then another round of something that had to be washed off almost immediately because it was way too painful. From there it was all problem solving as how to get some sort of color on my hair. I never felt any compassion or empathy as to how much pain I was in and it was never suggested that we take a break for a minute. I was just left there, head in the sink, while Kayla talked to Ashley (who seemed to be the lead colorist) about what to do. Ashley eventually took over (no explanation from Kayla, who had another appointment).I was flexible with going darker, since the lavender wasn't going to stick to my spotty hair, but I ended up with a punchy red-based blue - something I had expressly said to Kayla that I did not want; I feel that cooler purples match my skin better. Ashley did a round of toner on it to "dirty" it up, which helped a little bit. Ashely ended up doing my cut, which I LOVED. It looks great and is exactly what I was hoping for. The color though was way bright and incredibly patchy. It didn't just seem like the roots were a different color than previously bleached sections, but also that there was still some darker cool purple from my original color that either never got dyed over or didn't take very well and didn't get cut out. (I went home and threw a box of Ion Purple over the whole thing and it covered great and made my hair acceptable for the event I was going to that night thankfully.) I was never offered any sort of discount on the services, or really even an apology. I walked out of the salon with my scalp on absolute fire and even now, 4 days later, my entire head is still slightly sore and the skin on my scalp is flakey and very dry. I have never had a problem with any type of lightener before and really believe the appointment would have been fine had Kayla not put a second full round of bleach on my head. I hate having to write a "negative" review, because the place was really cute and they seem to be able to do good work, just not consistently. In the end, I MIGHT very hesitantly go back, but to Ashely or Shelby only - and only because my friend had such a great experience so I'm hoping that mine was just a fluke. read more

I'm new to the area, so always apprehensive about finding a new salon. I am so happy I chose Frayedberry. My color and cut came out gorgeous. It was the first time I had a dry cut; brilliant job! Brittany even curled my hair at the end to help me with a new do! To top it off, something that typically costs me around $200 was less than $100! Very happy and future loyal customer here! P.S. My husband needed a last minute cut to look respectable at a wedding. He doesn't have a typical men's haircut so we didn't want to go to a barber or a place that might make him look more respectable than he should. ;) We loved the pictures from their salon on Yelp and decided to drive 40 minutes to get his hair cut there. A few years ago when I lived in the Hagerstown area I would see these ladies for a haircut. It is still to this day the best haircuts that I have every received. I probably went here for a couple of years after also going to all of the other high end salons in the area the 5 years prior. I have now lived in Los Angeles and Jacksonville since then and have yet to find a comparable haircut for the price. Usually Shelby cut my hair and sometimes it was Ashley and both cut my hair with similar techniques and every time my hair looked great. What I liked was the "dry cut" they would do, as opposed to washing my hair first before cutting. They would then do a final wash and rinse after the cut was over (and style it too). The only thing that I would be critical of was sometimes the ladies working there would gossip about other customers, but I still give them 5 stars because their haircuts were so good. I think the price I paid for a men's haircut a few years ago was as cheap as $12 and probably no more than $15. I'm leaving this review a few years late because I'm still trying to find a salon that can replicate their haircuts I received at Frayedberry with still no luck. I miss their haircuts. read more
