They are the worst tree company I have ever been involved with. I had called to have them come over and give me a quote on multiple trees. They sent some, not the new guy, not the guy who had been there awhile but the actual OWNER of the company came by. Quoted me, I agreed and after telling me they weren't busy I waited over a month for them to schedule me. When the crew arrived they said they would require extra equipment and the price would need to be DOUBLED! I called and talked to Frank and he said he would look into it, not honor the quote that HE gave me but just check on it. We had 5 trees that needed taken down. Normally we've gone with another company, but decided this time to get a second quote. Boy, are we glad we did! Frank's Tree service came out right away and gave us a quote that saved us quite a bit of money and we were impressed with their credentials as well. Darnell stopped by right away to discuss our needs with the removal of several tall, lanky cottonwoods - the few remaining after the derecho. Some large limbs that remained on the ground in our woodland following more wind last year were included in this job. We received a fair estimate and the crew arrived within a week and completed all the work as requested. Today the winds were strong in Cedar Rapids and a neighbors tree came down and blocked my driveway. I'm 74 years old and can't wrangle a chain saw like I used to do. As soon as I saw the tree was down, I called Frank's Tree Service. Before I hung up the phone, Frank was on his way. He arrived within 20 minutes, surveyed the damage, gave me an estimate, and called his crew to come out as soon as possible. Within two hours the bucket truck and a group of guys was out and my driveway was cleared. The slash was piled up and chipped way. To top it all off, the price was very reasonable. Frank is unorganized and not customer oriented. Frank stated Thursday of week one (the first phone call) that he would have an estimate for fallen trees at my house in Iowa to me by Monday of week 2. Tuesday morning week 2 I called the second time asking if he had a chance to quote the effort, he had no recollection of me and I had to explain my circumstance again. He said this time that he would call me in the evening with a quote. Still no phone call, so Tuesday night week 2 I called the third time, and he said he has been busy and didn't get to it. I was unhappy, so I told him again that I live in California and I really would have appreciated if he would have done what he told me he would do, I am trying to do business from across the country. Frank responded that he probably wouldn't get to the estimate until Monday week 3....Information I could have used on week 1, as our house closing is Friday week 2. I voiced this, Frank hollered to get somebody else to do the job, and then Frank hung up on me. Crap, Frank, crap. read more

After waiting SEVEN weeks to finally get Frank's to come and do some tree service to my house, I called them the day of service to get a more accurate time of when they'd be here, only to be told they pushed my service back and the soonest would be four days later. It was already bad enough like pulling teeth to get them to make a suitable date to begin with. Naturally anyone would be a bit upset and want appropriate answers and to get them here sooner than FOUR days later after already waiting SEVEN weeks! I asked to speak to the manager for a reason and was told they had a bigger jobs to do first. In other words, you'll be put off in a split second if they can get more money from another job. The manager called me rude for being upset. Clearly this happens a lot and she's accustomed to expertly turning things around on an unhappy customer. If you want good service, call Ackerman's. They came out next day and was done within an hour. Whereas an hour's worth of work for Frank's is apparently too petty for them to bother with. read more

They were supposed to take a tree down today for my neighbor so we had to have Alliant and Imon come out and remove all of the lines, then they canceled day off. Awful service. If you're looking for a dependable company for a scheduled job, these guys are not an option. read more

I would agree with the prior reviewer about Frank being a bit disorganized. I called him in late June and he said he could get to me in two weeks, but then a storm came through and he spent over a month trying to cut trees out of houses. So, I don't blame him for being late. I does answer messages left for him. His guys were very nice and cleaned up after themselves. I would use him again for future tree projects. read more

We had Frank's Tree Service come out today and remove 5 trees and stumps, 2 which were very tall Oaks. They also trimmed up the rest of our oaks and trees. I am truly impressed with Frank's Tree Service/Crew. First off, I was worried about tearing up our lawn due to a warmer winter, but Frank took his time making sure we had the right day with the right temperatures to trim and take down the trees we wanted without ripping up our lawn in the process. Frank would even stop out personally and check our backyard to make sure it was frozen enough prior to starting the project. He'd always call a day or two in advance and talk with me about the plan. The day of the project, the crew showed up on time, and used equipment that's "yard friendly." I couldn't believe the size of the crew, they all had a job to do and they worked wonderfully together! You could tell they all had a task and they knew what to do. They never stopped working until the job was done. It was all very impressive to watch. They cleaned up our backyard wonderfully and even swept up any leftover debris in the street in front of our house. Anytime there was a question they would come verify with us prior to cutting or making a change based on safety. I couldn't be more happy with the project outcome and I would highly recommend this company to anyone. The office staff was also great to work with. They made my part in this all very easy. We used them to take out a tree, I came home for lunch, and decided to pay them then, bad idea, they never finished the tree and left a 5 foot stump. When I called them to see if they were coming back, they said their stump grinder was broken and never returned. I would avoid using them. read more

This was the second time we used Frank's Tree Service (had Frank's over at or first house several yrs ago). Our recently purchased home, we had Frank's Crew remove several large over grown trees, trim 4 huge trees, tear out the over grown bushes around the house, grind all the stumps and mulch it all up! They did a fantastic job having 3 crews working all at once on the projects at hand. got it all done and cleaned up by the end of the day. A neighbor's tree blew down into my yard this morning due to diseased tree and big wind gust. Called Franks and they were here in an hour for the quote and were back with all their big equipment in an hour. They cleaned up the downed tree and not even a twig was left. Courteous and quick staff. Very careful not do any more damage. This was the 3rd trip for my neighbor's diseased trees that keep falling on my house and they always deliver top notch service. read more

Quite satisfied overall. The crew was friendly, polite and efficient. Great job with clean-up. Frank listened to my concerns and offered a fair price. My one criticism is that they apparently sub-contract any larger stump grinding (I had them remove a big walnut tree), and it took a few weeks and several phone calls to get that taken care of, even after I had paid for the service. But all's well that ends well, and I will definitely call Frank again for any trimming or removal. read more

This was the worst experience I've ever had, I'd give a zero if that was possible. They decided to cancel our service to take down and remove a tree without informing us that they cancelled it for the day. Both utility companies had come out to drop lines for several houses, but only to return a few hours later to reinstall. The secretaries in the office were very rude and disrespectful to both my wife and myself. Yelling and screaming at us while we were trying to figure out why they hadn't come out to do the job. There response (yelling) was, we cancelled your job today and we don't have to inform you about it. They put in the cancellation at 7:30am with Alliant and we had to call them at 9:30 to findout why they weren't at our house. Then proceed to hang up the phone. Finally, talking with the owner about what was going on about the situation. He was very combative and said there was nothing he could do. He was the owner of his business and he could do what he wanted. So beware of this behavior when you have them do a job. It seems to be a trend of theirs; in fact other individuals have told us horror stories after they heard about ours. When we had to call and get new estimates, 3 different company's asked of it was Frank's before we even said the company name. Not showing up for jobs, not finishing or completing, and just rude disrespectful customer service. read more

Customer Service is poor and unresponsive. I have a tree that looks sick and needs to be removed. So, I looked up the "best" tree service company and used their "Free Quote" tool on their website. I submitted the online request in the evening of October 6th and didn't hear back from them until October 13th. I replied back 2 days later, and heard nothing until November 1st when the last person I talked to "no longer works here" and it took them a while to gain access to the emails... So, after about a week, I replied and we arranged a time I could meet up with their technician. So. I though I was all set for an evaluation. Well, the time for the evaluation came and went (between 12 and 1). Called twice, first time went to voicemail. With the second call, I managed to speak with a customer service person, who said she'd call the tech to find out where he was and she'd give me a call back. She didn't ask for my phone number, or ensure she had all the information she needed, or even confirm that there was an appointment for today... So, twenty minutes later, I still hadn't heard back, so I called and again, the call went to voicemail. So, now it's been 3 days from the appointment window, no show, no call, no email. Over a month to have someone come out to do a site survey and still no dice? I've had better luck getting an appointment set and completed by Mediacom than with Frank's Tree Service... Better not try to work with them by internet. read more

Frank's guys are pretty professional and they are good at removing trees. However, they dropped a tree on my driveway, and repaired the damage with cold patch. They told me that they had an asphalt guy who would take care of me, and I took Frank's word that he would. Now, I am having additional driveway work done a year later and the asphalt guys are telling me that the repair Frank did was not done with asphalt at all. Basically, the repairs were done with stuff from Menards. The patch was hand applied and no roller was used to compact the material. Giant tire ruts were also left in my yard, and not repaired. Frank works fast, his guys are nice and professional. But when things go off script, beware. read more

Well, I don't know where to begin so I'll try to make a long story short. I HAD a beautiful, large maple tree trimmed in my back yard that provides shade to the southern side of my house. When the crew arrived and the gentleman climbed the tree to trim it, that was just fine. When the climber returned to the ground he mentioned to me multiple times if not 3 or 4 times that my "tree was a detriment to me and my house, it is hollow, it's dead, my spike are going in this far." Motioning with his fingers. Yikes!! I scheduled Frank to come over to give me an estimate for the full tree removal. We agreed on a price since the tree had just been trimmed. A month later my tree was removed. Remember, it's southern exposure. You guessed it, my tree was healthy. Only two branches (one larger one and one smaller one) were dead. The trunk was healthy along with all the other branches. My yard got tore up which is expected (I guess) during a tree removal but so did my side yard where large chunks of sod are missing, plus, my driveway has tree-marks from dragging the branches down the driveway. I'm hoping the rain will wash it away. After the crew left and several tears, I have to move on.There is nothing I can do now except repair all the damage and figure out how I'm going to shade my deck and southern side to my house. On the bright side, I have fall and winter to figure that out. The following two days after the tree removal I received five phone calls wanting their payment and threatened to turn me into their collections department, Franks has a collections department?? Yes, it's supposed to be paid following any work. I was so upset, I couldn't answer my phone. I finally talked to Frank about my disappointment. "Your in the business to cut down trees but you should also be in the business to save them." I also need to add that prior to removing my tree, I had a conversation with Frank about cutting (only) the dead branches. "No, if you remove more than 1/3, you'll kill it." The crew did a fine job and took their time to protect my house and deck, I hope they do that for everyone. The bill is paid, my tree is gone and I have hired a landscaper to fix my yard. Frank's just left my yard after removing a very big and tall tree which was dying. Their team was efficient, polite and thorough. The price was very reasonable. I CAME IN FROM LOS ANGELES, CA TWICE!!! GO ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR TREE TRIMMING!! HE DISCOUNTS JOBS FOR GOOD REVIEWS!! Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience with Frank. He postponed work on my rental property twice. After confirming with his assistants AND one of his workers, he finally shows up...5 hours late...CLEARLY not wanting to work on this Saturday afternoon. No other workers were with him, his arm was in a sling and he stated that a car that was in the way needed to be moved. As well, my tenants have dogs and the poop needed to be raked up. TOTALLY AGREED with him, and my tenant got to it right away. Small area of dog stuff. Up in 5 minutes. He said...oh, we may have to reschedule. HUH? I asked him for time for the owner to travel back from the gym to move the car. He actually spoke to me in such a disrespectful tone that I had to tell him to CALM DOWN. Reminded him that I'd been waiting for him! So at least, could he agree that he should wait for the car to be moved SINCE THIS WAS NEW INFORMATION for me. I am baffled with by his demeanor, shocked even. Came in from Los Angeles to oversee this job, and he knew this. The guy is an asshole. He doesn't keep his word. His workers never even showed up! And I waited since 8am this morning...as previously confirmed. #ASSHOLE read more

I was very happy with Frank personally and the service his men did on my property. 10 men, 5 trucks and 4 hours later my tree was down, bushes pulled up and the place cleaned, made me a happy property owner and ready for spring. I personally liked Frank's friendliness. And I talked with his foreman on the job about how I would like to see things done, everyone was great. I would not recommend this business to anyone. My family suffered through the 2008 flood below the Coralville Dam. We rebuilt the home and decided to have some trees trimmed to limit future damage from the weather. We called Frank's Tree Service and he met with us to give and estimate. They are bonded for damage in the process of limb tree removal so when Frank called me the morning of the removal, and said that part of our deck steps had been crushed by a swinging limb, I knew it would be repaired and we were not angry. But over the course of the next few weeks it became clear that this man had no intention of paying for this damage, which he did not. He drug his feet on any repairs and every time I called it was another excure. We wanted this house done so I told Frank we would hire the builders to repair and give him the bill. He never paid, never called so in essence, my 95 year old mom who owns the house, never was reimbursed for the damage they caused. Nice customer service.
