I visited Neurological Specialties today as a first-time patient. When I called to make the…read moreappointment a couple of days ago, the office scheduler said that neither doctor had any availability until next week. Then I released my begging and desperate pleas for an ASAP appointment - I was enduring a lot of pain and while I did know that I needed to see a Neurologist, I did not know that he would be the ONLY doctor I needed to see. I have seen a number of different medical personnel over the past 3 days, and hardly any of them listened to what I had to say. Dr. Henkel was magnificent. He actually took the time to listen to my description of my painful symptoms and did not dismiss my questions with esoteric explanations, as many other physicians have done. He involved me in his diagnostic thought process as he narrowed the medical possibilities. He took the time to examine the radiological images that I brought with me to the appointment and shared his professional thoughts on the images while allowing me to view them side-by-side. Dr. Henkel treated me like an educated human being, and did not dismiss my concerns at all. Together we were able to discern the particular disorder that I have been enduring for the past several days. In sum, I am grateful to have met Dr. Henkel. Credit is also due to Neurological Specialties personable nursing staff, as my particular nurse was very funny and comforting during the initial data collection process. It was also nice to pay the copay at the END of the visit - many offices are forcing patients to pay the fee before they've even been treated. Neurological Specialities as a whole is an excellent facility.

I recently sought care from Dr. Brown and her team at SpinePain & Orthopedic Injury Center for a…read moreserious and complex condition. Dr. Brown is highly competent in her field. Another doctor in the BayCare system told me, "Oh, Dr. Brown? She's excellent." Based on her diagnosis and treatment, I believe it. She's action-oriented, determined, and clearly committed to making a positive impact. I also received exceptional care from one of her nurses, Jessica, who called me after hours to check on my condition. Unfortunately, my experience gets mixed from there. You'll see negative reviews of this practice, and here's my read on why. Dr. Brown is brilliantly competent, but she can come across as cold and unempathetic. I say this as a leadership psychologist (Dr. Brown -- you should reach out to me; I can help). I noticed the same thing with another assistant of hers: highly competent, but no warmth in the communication. That's not uncommon in medicine. It's unfortunate, because this team is brilliant with the Xs and Os. It's the Jills and Joes part that could use some elevation. Then came the moment I lost some trust. I had a flare-up and was in a lot of pain. I called and asked for a same-day appointment. The person at the front desk said, "I think we can get you in here or at our other facility. I'll call you back with a time." She never called. I'm guessing it was a simple oversight by someone overwhelmed with other tasks, and I could have called back myself -- that's on me. But the follow-through was Dr. Brown's responsibility. She's the leader. It was disappointing, and I lost some trust. I'm still rooting for Dr. Brown and her office, and I will try them again. Everyone makes mistakes. But this time, it will be with hesitation.

A life-changing experience conducted by a caring and skilled doctor…read more Chronic pain is a debilitating condition that no one wants to endure relentlessly. If you're visiting Joseph Spine Institute it's likely that you've explored a lot of alternative avenues to alleviate your pain and improve your quality of life to no avail. You are hoping there are still some non invasive paths to be explored, but deep down you know that surgery is likely on the horizon. And, that's a scary word. I did a lot of online research before deciding that Dr. Nguyen with Joseph Spine Institute was going to be the doctor to whom I surrendered my trust and well-being to and I couldn't be happier with that decision. Not only is he an incredible surgeon, but he's an all-around good person. My appointments were never rushed, he answered every question I asked (even the ridiculous ones) and genuinely seemed to care about my well-being. He did not immediately recommend surgery as a course of action to reduce my pain. But when it was the last option on the table, he tried to alleviate my concerns while still being honest about the procedure, the risks involved and the recovery ahead. I am now almost 4 months post-op from an ACDF procedure (C5-7) and still have nothing but positive things to say about this office and specifically this doctor. My quality of life has improved dramatically and I hope I will continue to see improvement over the next few months. I am so thankful to this practice for the quality of care that I received. Choosing Joseph Spine Institute was easily one of the best decisions I've ever made.
