I wanted this to be great food, because we were really hungry. However, the service was a bad experience. We waited almost 15 minutes for our waitress. After taking our drink order it seemed like we were forgotten. Finally our order was taken, and it took another 15 minutes for our side salads. Food came out and it looked great. The poor service ruined it though, so we took it to go. The Stromboli and calzone turned out to be decent, but not outstanding. The smell of fresh baking bread hits you when you walk in. They feature house made pasta, and a great selection of popular Italian dishes. Surprisingly good food for such a small town. Tried the bruschetta, and pasta dishes. The marinara was legit, as were the rolls they placed on our table. Alfredo with prawns/shrimp looked wonderful. My cheese ravioli were very good. We ordered a Caesar salad and a calzone. Both were horrid. The Salad dressing was out of a bottle and the croutons were store bought. When the calzone came out it was cold. Frankie used to own this wonderful restaurant with the silly (but descriptive) name. Now this amazing place is owned by brother Rafi, who was our chef today. My companion is a world traveler who was stationed in Europe for years and has dined in many of the finest restaurants Italy has to offer. She enjoyed the veal Cremora and proclaimed it arguably the best she's ever had. The chicken piccata was tart, flavorful and boasted a plethora of capers, one of my special weaknesses. We ordered dinner salads (guilt-induced?) The House dressing is a tangy - AMAZING! - tomato basil dressing that is better than any other restaurant dressing you have ever eaten. Of course it's delicious: it's made in house by someone who knows his way around the Italian kitchen. I was torn between the chicken piccata and the eggplant rollentini: eggplant with ricotta and mozzarella, topped with tomato sauce. I've never seen more than one eggplant dish on an Italian menu before. Now that I've experienced Rafi's magic with sauces, I'm sorry I didn't try that. But wait! There's more! One of the listed specials is tilapia Florentine: spinach, mushrooms, garlic with linguini and Alfredo sauce. Free WiFi (ask lovely server Tiffany for the password). I always wonder how such a great restaurant manages to stay open in such a T-tiny Texas town. The fracking boom probably doesn't hurt. They offer a drive through service, and Frankie's Pasta and Pizza has been open for many years. Their prices are 25% below Austin's customary prices for equivalent quality. One mark of their success is that we arrived for lunch at 2:00 PM. We were never the only party in the dining room, and they served at least two drive-through orders while we were here. A large group of us are RVing at Fort Parker State Park for the New Year's Eve week and we needed a place to go out and eat on New Year's Eve. Frankie's sounded good so the eight of us headed into Mexia from Ft. Parker State Park. Frankie's seems to be a local favorite here in Mexia. They were quite busy when we arrived. Our server promptly put tables together for us and took our drink and entree orders. The menu prices were quite reasonable especially for a New Year's Eve. In fact, their normal menu was in effect. The menu has the standard Intalian entrees listed. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmesan and I ordered the Shrimp Scampi along with a tossed salad.we also order a couple of garlic bread. Even though the restaurant was very busy, our server took very good care of us. My salad was typical, somewhat unremarkable, with a tomato based Italian dressing. The garlic bread appetizers were wonderful, full or garlic and very crispy. Our server also brought several baskets of fresh baked rolls. Yummy! Our entrees arrived fairly quickly and both were very good. My wife really enjoyed her chicken entree and my shrimp scampi was delicious. The portions are very large and could have been split. One person ordered pizza and I got to taste it. It was also really good. Everyone in our party enjoyed their entrees and the experience at Frankie's. I go down to mexia about 20 times a year and this is the only place to eat! If you're driving through, their pizza and subs are always fresh and ready waiting (call in 15 minutes before you get there).
