I can definitely see why it's such a popular venue for weddings. Parking is very easy with a relatively spacious lot. It's handicap friendly. The GPS instructions were accurate. Be sure to check out their social media or call their number to stay up to date on weekend closures for private events before visiting. The wedding season is around March to November. Communication for event space rentals is by email only. During the wedding season they may a little slower to reply but they always did reply eventually. For weddings they tend to book out about two years in advance for weekends. If you ask about Fridays there may be some same year availability. As a non-profit they are a relatively affordable venue. Weddings require almost full day rentals. But something else like a baby shower or memorial can be rented out by the hour with a minimum time. They require a permit to be purchased for professional photos. But it's a modest price and goes to a good cause. It's $75/hour for the photo permit and for a garden use permit like a small gathering it's $300. Walnut Creek is lucky to have such a beautiful gem. I highly recommend checking them out!

We had our wedding last Friday (10/11) and was perfect! All of our guest raved about how perfect our wedding was. That was because of Dan, lien and their vendors. Always open communication if you need anything. I'm so pleased with the outcome of the wedding and we will be coming back to visit Dan and Lien.

You fall in love with the beauty of the place & Lien seems nice, until the contract is signed, then all bets are off. We are a basic, calm, friendly & kind family; we had reasonable expectations, BUT, there were so many disappointments--hidden charges, spontaneous unreasonableness from Lien, lackadaisical kids who I guess are family members that work cheap for her without enthusiasm...ruined it for me. And what is her issue with vendors?? I guess she doesn't get a cut so she makes it extremely painful for you if you don't go with hers, very passive-aggressive behavior. I had two family members with professional skills who wanted to be our vendors for photography and DJ, and Lien said ok but she kept complaining to me that they hadn't properly completed her required forms--my family members told me they had completed the forms multiple times already, but Lien told me no. She called me up a week before the wedding to say if she didn't get the forms, we would have no vendors for these two important roles. My niece was almost in tears saying she would submit the forms again. We had to pay extra to have access to venue an hour early, we had to pay extra for anticipated bar because we paid extra for guests to stay longer and relax after the bridal party departed. However her staff/kids came out and started clearing off tables as soon as the bride-groom left, even though we still had at least an hour, maybe an hour & a half paid for, so guests started leaving since they thought it was time. Also, it was 100 degrees that day and Lien said she did not have any space in her refrigerator to keep our small 20 inch 2 layer cake, the one for the bride & groom. How can that be? Honestly, I wish we would have chosen somewhere else, it was so stressful to deal with the owners. You want it to be such a special day, and you hope to see that reflected by the owners/staff but then you are treated like just another set of fools to be milked for money like a cash cow. Her staff seemed bored and disinterested, they clearly could not wait to be done. My daughter & her groom were shielded from a lot of the unpleasantness I and other family members had to navigate as mom/family of the bride. I would never recommend this place unless it gets new owners. I can't believe the good reviews, my experience was just so bad. We paid a lot and didn't even try to adjust the costs after they shut us down early for no reason, it wasn't worth dealing with them. It is a shame, the place is really lovely.

Especially our amazing coordinator Steph and Banquet Captain Shyla. A moment that captures their care and professionalism was when a splash of Balsamic dripped on the brides gown during the dinner, Shyla (banquet captain) fetched soda water and was on her knees helping to dab it. As we got to our big day, I felt confident that I could just sit back and enjoy, as every detail was organized and prepared and Steph knew our exact schedule to the minute. As things took longer than expected, she expertly helped us to adjust our schedule in the moment so we had the perfect time for it all. All the coordinators, particularly our day of coordinator, Steph, were super communicative throughout the whole process leading up to the day of our wedding feel very smooth + removed a lot of the stress. They were able to take care of a lot of the logistical details we didn't want to worry about while still working with us to customize things that made the wedding feel special/personal as well as coordinate with some outside vendors we brought in. They put in all the work up front so that the actual day felt very smooth and worry-free. The venue is also beautiful. The only small negative was that we had to move guests to the dance floor, which is a bit smaller/crowded for speeches since apparently they can't use mics in the dinner area, but I think this is due to some regulation out of their control. However, they still handled this transition well - it was just a bit inconvenient. Overall, would definitely reccomend!

Once we visited, we just KNEW this was our location. During our tour, we stood in the ceremony spot in the East Wing and asked each other, "is this it?" And yes, is certainly was. A few months later, that spot is where we happily said "I do!" Driving into the Headlands is like entering a magical realm of nature, silence, and openness. The building has such relaxed, artistic vibe. When designing our wedding's look and feel, we were committed to working with its already super cool appeal. The distressed golden walls of the Rodeo Room have such character, making it the perfect backdrop for our Photo Booth selfie station... and they even inspired the texture of our wedding cake! Beyond the fact that we loved the venue, it is especially heartwarming to know that our rental fee is going toward sustaining this artistic organization and its artists, helping it to thrive. The wedding budget is always tricky and a bit painful, but it feels really good to know that chunk of money is going toward a worthy local cause. Being a DIY bride, I really appreciated how exceptionally responsive both the in-house staff who would immediately answer all the weird little questions that kept popping up that I couldn't find in our contract. Oh, and the FOOD!!! Katie Powers, their in-house caterer is an artist. She is exceptionally dedicated to creating local, sustainable, and delicious meals. Although she doesn't provide taste testing, Katie's descriptions and enthusiasm while building our menu together at our in-person meeting was infectious, giving us the confidence that it would be amazing. We opted to have our meal served family-style which really enhanced the sense of community and appreciation for the meal. It is also very special to have an in-house caterer cook from her kitchen with her staff. The service, artistry, and flavors had everyone swooning and diving in for seconds. Our biggest concern was the latrine... the open unisex bathroom that's sort of creepy. However, using our very own living room drapes and some tension rods, we easily sectioned the room off into Men's and Ladies areas. Adding candles, flowers, music, and artsy magnets along the metal stall doors, we turned it around and that military latrine became a cool oasis where everyone felt comfortable... even this bride who appreciated the large stall when negotiating my dress.... Going forward, we are so thankful this magical gem is available to our enjoyment, as we look forward to becoming members and experiencing the works from their artists in residence. For anyone thinking that this may be the venue for you, just like they say when you meet the right one, when you know, you know!

The Center for the Arts has art openings, special showings, performances and art residents working/living out there all year long. Check it out or go stay at the hostel some weekend. It's gorgeous out there. It's so tucked away and peaceful in the valley there, yet so close to the city. It's like a little retreat. ----------------- just to paint a picture: THE ARTISTS' STUDIOS The Headlands' buildings are home to nearly 40 studios such as this one, where artists in residence pursue their work and often make it available for the public to view. THE ARCHIVE ROOM Over the years, bits and pieces of the rich military history and the remarkable natural phenomena of the Headlands Center for the Arts have been discovered, uncovered and left behind. The Archive Room contains a collection of these objects. As a testament to the layers of history that we have unearthed, this room contains layers of debris generated by each renovation project. As this place ages and changes, new layers of detritus are added. New additions are welcome. THE MAIN BUILDING Renowned artist David Ireland transformed the rooms and halls in this 1907 military-barracks building, where the wedding ceremony was held. Twenty four young artists volunteered for a year on an artistic journey that in many ways was more like an archaeological dig than an art project. Ireland conceives of his work as exploration rather than imposition. Things that have acquired an identity of their own over time -- broken chairs, brooms worn by use, stained walls -- intrigue him, and this sense of history informs his work. David Ireland and his crew sandblasted the layers of paint off the stamped-tin ceilings and pillars, and using sandpaper, solvents and even dental tools, picked the paint off the beautiful stairwell, railings and banisters. In the East Wing (the ceremony site), they stripped the walls down to the original plaster and the baseboards to their fine wood. These rooms are not only beautiful works of art, but important gathering places. Their functional duality -- aesthetic and practical -- reflects the Headland's mission and the kind of art it exists to support. Simply put, public and site art seek to take art out of its frame and put it back into the real world. Public art responds to its audience, as site art responds to its location. David Ireland's rooms serve both goals, situated at the heart of a thriving art center, sharing its artistic treasures with the public.
