They have a great selection of frames though, stocking brands by highly regarded designers such as Oliver Peoples, Ray Ban, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Persol, Tom Ford and many more. This place is rather pricey, but if you are after something that they won't have in other designer eyewear outlets, or you want to make a statement with your glasses then it really is the place to go. Not only this, but you get a sense that the staff are pretty knowledgeable in all things optical and will help find the best pair of spectacles for you.

David Clulow do nearly everything other opticians do: they don't offer eye tests, but will organise contacts and glasses for any prescription. This kind of service turns David Clulow from a designer boutique into a genuine Specsavers alternative, away from all of their bureaucracy and poor selection: a great service for Brighton! My big sticking point here is the price: I know glasses are pricey, but everything in here is out of most peoples' basic price range. They are all lovely designer pieces, and all companies seem to be well represented, but there's little for the smaller waller. A shame! If you wear glasses, pop in here to get a good idea of proper upmarket frames, what you can get for your money, and an alternative if Specsavers prove to be as rubbish as they are to me on a frequent basis. They also offer an 'extended' eye examination, so you don't feel rushed like you can in many other opticians, as well 'Ortho-K' contact lenses that correct your eyesight while you sleep. They also stock a large range of frames, sports glasses and sunglasses from every top designer including Chanel, D&G, Prada, Tom Ford and even Tiffany. The staff seemed quite friendly and helped give me directions to a local Foodbank, so I was able to make a donation of items I'd acquired for free earlier that day, I decided to go to the Co-op down the road if anyone here is reading this looking for a donation box. The store is probably slightly above average for a Boots store with the traditional store offering and a few fragrance counters. I didn't really like the food and drink selection being on the top floor, but the selection overall was again okay and basically the same as most good locations of Boots, albeit slightly smaller than my local Manchester branch. Decent sized store, decent selection in most parts and friendly, helpful staff who can help with local problems, rather than just finding something direct in store. 3*

The optician I saw - and her assistants - were all plesant and helpful. The shop itself is large and bright. Whilst I didn't actually end up buying any frames there they did have a large selection to choose from. Would definitely recommend using them. They usually have offers running on free eye tests so try googling them before you make an appointment to see what vouchers are available.

Of course, eye tests have completely changed in that time, so I had no idea how they compare - now, with a bit more experience, I think they compare very well indeed. I was seen by three members of staff, who took me through various parts of the testing programme, and I was also given feedback on what each test was for and what my results were, not just a quick summary at the end. I was given a prescription at the end, but wasn't pressured to take it out or buy expensive frames. And with it being so central, its a quick option in any case for most people, just about fits into a lunchtime. Thoroughly recommended.

Personally, I gravitated towards D & A more than Linwood, just because the prices struck me as being slightly more attractive. But then again, if you tend to buy yourself the glasses you want rather than spend the amount of money you want to, it'll be worth your time visiting the friendly people at Linwood.

In fact the family run Somerset optician's I've used since I was a kid has recently shut up shop and, you guessed it, a Specsavers is due to move in. However, I had a such a positive experience when I headed here, that I'm gonna attempt to rate this giant company on the Brighton branch alone. The optician herself was very friendly and helpful, as were the staff who helped me choose/fit the glasses. The prices were good - at the time I was still a student which gave me a whopping 30% off! And I loved the photo machine that allowed you to see yourself in the various glasses. But, prices and gimmicks aside, the jolly staff mean that I'll probably go back.
