From the outside it doesn't look like much but we were surprised that when we went in to check it out, we found that they actually have a small dining room with tables and chairs. There is a counter where you enter your order and sandwiches pay for your food. The menu is surprisingly extensive. They have both hot and cold sandwiches along with some hot entrées . I had a cold pastrami sandwich and it was very good. I liked it better than most supermarket sandwich counters and better than Subway sandwiches. My wife had a cup of Vegetable Barley Soup and Onion Rings. All in all, it was pretty good. It was far better than we expected. This is a good lesson where we should not judge a book by its cover.

Oakland Tavern - Old School Fun Since the late 1800s…read more Stopped into the Oakland Tavern in Oakland, OR, and wow - what a blast! I think our bartender's name was Alicia (if so, she was fantastic - if not, whoever it was deserves a medal). Friendly, quick, and made the whole place feel like home. It's got some 49ers vibes going on, so you've been warned (or welcomed, depending on your team colors). This is an old-school bar - started in the late 1800s - but it's packed with life. Lots of colorful, interesting locals, and just an all-around great group of people to share a drink with. Didn't try the food, so no comment there - but the atmosphere alone was worth the stop. The kind of place you wish you could come back to every weekend. If you're anywhere near Oakland, OR, and in the mood for history, laughs, and a cold drink, this is your spot.

The cheeseburger was really excellent. I don't care for burgers but it had a good amount of beef and tasted like it was made on a flat top so the outside was browned and caramelized. I really liked the tots, too. They were crunchy and the fry sauce was a perfect dip for them. I could only eat half. The fries were pretty good, as well. Service was really good. The person who helped us in the deli was really nice. Ambiance? It's a country store with a small deli and a couple places to sit and eat. It was nice. It's nice getting to look around while you wait for your food to be cooked. I would definitely go back and try other things. I recommend stopping in if you're heading by. The reason for the one star is because for being a restaurant they should have a bathroom for their customers! All that they offer is an outhouse porta potty! Yuk! The smell of a Porta potty would certainly ruin your appetite. Hopefully that's not what the people working there have to use. If the workers have a flush toilet with a sink to wash their hands, they should offer that same bathroom to the customers as well. I will not support a restaurant that makes the customers go to a pit toilet porta potty.
