One of the reasons I bought a home in this town is the theater. Always friendly and prices are amazing.

Cue the dramatic trailer voice:…read more In a world where movie theaters can be sticky, chaotic, and somehow out of popcorn... one Bakersfield theater dared to be clean. Studio Movie Grill was a solid date-night win. From check-in to the bar to seat-side service, everyone was friendly, helpful, and on it. The seats are comfy enough that you may briefly question whether you came for the movie or a sanctioned recliner nap. We usually stop at the bar first, where I stay loyal to the Not-House Chardonnay while my husband goes full action-movie lead with the cocktails. A Tito's Bloody Mary feels like the brunch sequel nobody asked for but everyone secretly enjoys: bold, dramatic, and ready for its close-up. Then we order food, head to our seats, and let the magic happen. I also just learned SMG has a free rewards program, which honestly deserves its own plot twist. I've been using Fandango credits, but SMG rewards looks better since you can earn credit on menu items too. That's a very strong supporting character. Plus they support "special needs" humans with free movie nights...bonus for the non-profit twist. So why 4 stars and not 5? Because the plant-based menu is still waiting for its big breakout role. I think there's basically the avocado flatbread if you remove the cheese, which is fine, but I'm ready for the plant-based options to get top billing. Overall: clean theater, great service, comfy seats, drinks, food, and a fun date night that does not require awkwardly whispering, "Did we just spend $80 to sit in public?" Well... maybe, but at least it was worth it.

The food quality was not what I expected based on past experiences. Starting off with the Coconut Chicken that was always our go to. It's not as good as we remembered. (They also forgot the sauce, small detail missed). The fries were very average. Next was the chicken and waffles. I did not see any reviews on them so I thought I'd try them. My advice, go to Moms Place first if you are wanting some. The waffles were ok but the two you get are the size of the bottom of a Stanley tumbler. Sprinkled with powdered sugar to make them tastier I guess. The chicken (fingers) were 80% breading and 20% meat. No flavor. No seasoning. If I were in charge I'd give you 5-6 French toast sticks instead, to make them easier to dip. No silverware is given so you really don't want to smother your syrup on everything. It's more of a dipping option. I'd have taken pics but obviously it's darker during the movie. I miss when their kitchen was top notch and not $60 for two small bland meals, drink and a tip.

The location was new several years ago and the seats have some wear and tear but nothing to write home about. Sometimes they forget to turn the lights off when the movie starts, if that happens, just run and let someone know and they fix it right away. It's a non issue. 1 star. Customer…read moreservice is awful, especially from the front staff member with glasses who checks tickets. Every time I come here, she searches my bag and my family's bags, even though we've never tried to sneak anything in. My Mom doesn't like to come here anymore because whenever we watch a movie as a family, we always get stopped to be searched, it feels hostile. What makes it worse is that white customers who come in after us don't get searched at all. I've even seen white patrons walk in with full backpacks--no check-- when they stay in the row behind us we saw them takeout Chipotle. Meanwhile, I'm being stopped over a small handbag that barely fits lip gloss. It feels targeted and discriminatory. Everyone else on staff is nice, but she completely ruins the experience. The lighting inside the theater is also terrible. Seat numbers are hard to see, which caused a seating mix-up during Lilo & Stitch. Because of that, a grown adult started yelling at us over an honest mistake that wouldn't have happened if the theater wasn't so dark. Moreover, if I'm paying $30+ I want the seat I sit in not to be peeling onto my clothes, or to step on something sticky on the way to the seat. Lastly, the hot sauce at concessions seems expired or very old. The smell was so bad my boyfriend threw away his popcorn.

As you enter the "lobby", you first get a perfect look at a charming facility. You then immediately walk up to ticket counter/snack bar a few feet from the front door entrance. You then have the option to enter the actual theatre room located directly behind the snack bar from two sides with a door on each side of the snack bar. Upon entering you walk into a rather large theatre with your traditional movie screen. Then you're left wondering how did they fit this screen in here? This place is a gem and a must if you're in the area. If you've driven by the theatre don't waste your time thinking, "I wonder how that place looks like inside?" Stop by, find out for yourself, and enjoy a great movie at a great location! P.S. This place needs to come out in a movie (horror, teen drama or romcom, or some comedy by Seth Rogan) because it has too much charm to go unnoticed.

Padded upholstered seats lean back and are most comfortable when you bring your own pillow to put behind your back (small town theaters are perfect for that kind of casualness). Popcorn, sodas, candy, etc. The Reel Cinema is definitely worthy of date night, or family night attendance.

While visiting family in Bakersfield, I decided to treat my mom and younger brother to a movie. We…read morehad all been wanting to see Obsession, and when they told me they hadn't seen it yet, I thought it would be the perfect activity since we're all fans of scary movies. We found parking quickly, check-in was fast and easy, and the theater itself appeared clean and well-maintained. The auditorium was a bit on the smaller side, but it still felt comfortable and wasn't overly crowded, which I actually appreciated. Before the movie started, we made our mandatory concession stand stop. I was especially excited when I spotted kettle popcorn, but unfortunately they told me they were already sold out even though our movie was fairly early in the day. That was definitely a letdown, but luckily I still enjoy classic buttery movie theater popcorn, so I was able to pivot without too much heartbreak. I also liked that the drink station had touchscreen machines with plenty of soda and juice options to choose from. My mom decided to get an ICEE, but she was a little disappointed when she went back for a refill during the movie and found the machine was out of service. Between the missing kettle popcorn and the ICEE issue, the concession experience wasn't quite as smooth as we had hoped. One of my favorite parts of the visit was definitely the reclining seats. Being able to kick back, put my feet up, and get comfortable made the movie even more enjoyable. I also appreciated that the auditorium wasn't freezing cold like some theaters tend to be. As for Obsession, I personally didn't find it all that scary, but it was entertaining and suspenseful enough to keep me engaged throughout the film. More importantly, it was a fun way to spend quality time with my family. Overall, we had a really nice movie day together. While there were a couple of minor hiccups with the concession area, the clean theater, comfortable seating, easy parking, and convenient location made for an enjoyable experience. Since this is the closest theater to my family's home I would definitely come back to catch another movie the next time I'm in town.
