Interesting park Fox Point is.
On one hand you've got great views of the Delaware, the Philly skyline, the non-stop shipping traffic on the river and a veritable foam fest of Amtrak activity with trains seemingly flying by every few minutes.
On the other hand you come here understanding that you're standing on some seriously contaminated land that the Pennsylvania Railroad dumped on for years. Yes, a whole of lot of time, effort and money has gone and continuous to go into making this place safe but do you really trust a supposedly impermeable layer of thick plastic that was placed over the 15 acre surface of the site to isolate the contaminated material?
I digress.
The approach to the park is well signed but it's awkward in that you need to drive down a narrow road or two thru this heavily industrial area that feels more like you're trespassing rather than heading to a state park.
The park offers a two mile trail along the water front, picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, play areas for kids and restrooms. With that said, the volleyball is clearly not maintained and the restrooms are in quasi-rough shape as well.
One other funky thing worth pointing out. There is a booth at the park's entrance where an entrance fee is supposed to be collected. I guess we came outside of the collection hours or it doesn't occur on weekdays but according to the sign as an out of state car we were supposed to pay eight dollars on the honor system as there was a stack of green envelopes on the side of the entrance booth. With all due respect to the fine state of Delaware. This park is NOT worth eight dollars or even the in state price of four dollars. If someone would have been there collecting the fee we would have a made an amazingly fast U-Turn and headed back the other way down Lighthouse Road.
If you go, take exit 4 off of 495 then follow the signs as the entrance road is close by.
If you have to pay the entrance fee turn around and leave as it's not that interesting. But if you can sneak in for free then I suppose whatever although maybe you should keep your visit short considering what you might be walking on. read more
