It sits next to Elgin Elementary school and across from Elgin intermediate school. Behind the cemetery is a small park with a pond. There are many graves from the 1800s, but this is still an active graveyard with some fresh additions. If you're looking for a particular grave, they do have a records building, but you will have to call the number pictured below to make an appointment. The cemetery has three entrances which allow for cars to drive in on the gravel roads. I was surprised not to find a Texas historical sign, only a marker. Most of the graves that sit within this 2 to 3 acre enclosure are primarily from the 20th century and later. There are a handful of stones from the 1800s. This is still a very active cemetery with many well adorned gravesites from the surviving family members. The cemetery looks relatively well-maintained although a handful of older headstones are lying on their sides. There is still some space for future interments, but it is mostly full. There are three entrances to the property with a single gravel lane winding through the property. For the most part the graves are laid out in neat rows and some family plot areas, but there is still a little bit of randomness in some of the graves as to how they fit in. I did spot three historical names here that are tied to Austin/Round Rock history. There were several graves dedicated to the name Gattis (Gattis School Rd) and Boatright and at least one to Bohls. The Boatright name seemed to be the most prominent name in the cemetery. Two other names that I found in number here are Templeton and Summers. There are some service members buried here along with 3 confederate soldiers, 2 of them are of the Boatright name. If you're looking for a forever home or just want to check out some names of history, this place is worth a visit.

There is a short driveway next to McKenna Lane which fits one car in front of the gate, but no road in. There is a small Texas historical sign at the front gate and a kiosk on the property with family photos enshrined. The layout of the less than two dozen graves is in some order and they are almost all buried on the summit of the hill. Further back on the property, I did find a few more, including the grave of Robert Tarleton, whose headstone was cast in concrete and who died in 1949. Almost all of the graves are primitive in their construction consisting mostly of just simple bricks and stone. Some markers are cast in concrete, which is cheaper, but the rest are in granite. Although I will say at the entrance there are single-family residences and at the back you'll find longhorns grazing behind the fence. Despite well over 1000 headstones on the property, it is very well organized and laid out with a paved road running through it. At the entrance, you'll find a sign with all the graves numbered and the rules pertaining to interment. It is still an active and well tended to and manicured cemetery with plenty of space left. Many of the markers still see regular attendance and appreciation by family members. At the front of the property, you'll find upright markers and towards the back they are all flush mount markers. The only thing this cemetery lacks is a Texas historical sign. I was surprised there was not one here after walking the property. However, there are lots of shade trees (mostly Oaks) on the property. The older headstones are located on the west side of the property and the newer ones towards the back and east side. One thing that got my attention, was the fact that all of the older headstones have been cleaned to the point of being fresh and new again. Though it is next to the road it still sits on private property. If you try to go past the gate on the property you will set off an alarm. There does not appear to be any new graves nor a lot of room for new residents either.

There's no direct access to this small cemetery so you'll have to park on a nearby street and risk your life crossing the highway. It's obvious that some highway work crews have been trimming back some of the overgrowth. One of the headstones was so badly worn away that it could not be read. Not exactly the most peaceful cemetery with all the cars whizzing by and the planes overhead. The pictures included in this review fill in the gaps.

I almost gave up looking for this cemetery because of its remote location. Google maps has it at…read moreone location when in reality it's almost a quarter of a mile away. It's very close to Highway 20 and Shiloh Road, which is just on the outskirts of Bastrop, Texas. In order to find it, you'll have to turn into a school parking lot and then very quickly veer left onto a single lane dirt road and follow it about 1000 feet until you arrive. This is still very much an active cemetery for the local residents. It sits on about 3 to 5 acres and still has additional room in case you're interested. After scanning many of the headstones, it is primarily an African-American cemetery judging by the headstones and porcelain portraits affixed to those markers. It has a single gravel road that dead ends at the back of the cemetery. There's a lot of randomness as to how the graves are arranged with lots of flowers left by loved ones. I did not spot any headstones from the 1800s, the vast majority are from the latter part of the 20th century and on. There were a few service members buried here and most of the graves have granite headstones, but some are in the cheaper cast concrete. It's a quiet place, but you can still hear the traffic on Highway 20 not far away.

The cemetery is quite large as it sits on 99 acres. It does have a small parking lot for about a dozen cars and porta potties. If you qualify for a Travis county burial, you are entitled to a 20 minute service for a group of up to 20 people. They do offer a 9:30 am and an 11:30 am service time. Travis county has two such cemeteries, this being the largest one. At this point in time, there's only a few hundred burials here, and there is a section set aside for infants and children. The graves are laid out with concrete borders with name plates on the border itself, but you can erect your own small head stone should you choose.
