Though it is next to the road it still sits on private property. If you try to go past the gate on the property you will set off an alarm. There does not appear to be any new graves nor a lot of room for new residents either.

The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.

Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. I stopped by the Texas State Cemetery on a Thursday afternoon in mid May. The weather was just…read morestarting to warm up, but hadn't quite crossed into "Texas hot" yet. Fred greeted me at the gate along with another staff member and immediately made me feel welcome. He asked if I was meeting anyone, looking for someone specific, or if there was anything in particular I wanted to see. What followed was one of the most unexpectedly meaningful experiences I've had in Austin. Calling what Fred did a "tour" honestly feels too shallow. He walked me through the grounds like a historian and storyteller preserving something important. He shared stories about the people buried there, explained the architecture and monuments, and had an unbelievable depth of knowledge about Texas history. But more than that, he knew how to read the moment. He knew when to pause and let you take it all in. He knew when to speak, when to move on, and somehow seemed to anticipate my questions before I even asked them. Fred was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but genuinely funny, engaging, and an amazing ambassador for the cemetery and for Texas history itself. You could tell he truly cared about preserving the stories behind the names. A cemetery may seem like an unusual destination to some people, but I see it as a place of remembrance, sacrifice, service, and history. Visiting here, especially after also seeing the Alamo, helps you understand the absolute, unmistakable pride Texans have in their state. There's just no question about it. One detail I especially appreciated was learning that the visitor center was intentionally designed to resemble the Long Barracks at the Alamo. It was a subtle but powerful connection between two places dedicated to preserving Texas history and identity. If you appreciate history, storytelling, or quiet places that make you reflect a little deeper, this is absolutely worth visiting.

This particular cemetery is surrounded by housing on three sides and is located at the end of a…read morenarrow stretch of road just off of Rundburg. The road that leads to the cemetery entrance is run down with some homeless encampments along it. There are about six parking spaces and you can actually drive into the cemetery itself. The one thing that I noticed that was conspicuously absent was a Texas historical sign which you would normally see at older graveyards like this. The cemetery would've been located on the outskirts of Austin in the 1800s, but is of course now surrounded by urban growth. There are quite a number of graves from the 1800s but there are recent burials as well. It is relatively well-maintained and there was even an information booth explaining who is buried where. This cemetery appears to be about 5 acres in size and has hundreds of graves. Many of the graves are from the turn of the 20th century or before, but there are a handful of newer ones. I did find a couple of graves from 2020. Despite looking pretty full, it appears there is still room for those who would like to be interred here. Plenty of pictures below with more information.

This cemetery is just a stones throw away from I 35, just a block from Stassney Ln and behind some…read moreretail outlets. I spotted it on Google maps, so with this review, the photos should make it to Google maps. Unfortunately, it is completely overgrown and uncared for which makes it hard to spot from the road. There is a fence that surrounds the perimeter, but it too has seen better days. To add to the confusion, many of the graves are just randomly laid out and in a state of disrepair. Little to no effort has been made to restore the grounds. Most of the markers are cast in concrete, not granite, leading me to believe this may be an African-American graveyard. It appears some members of the public have set up a few benches at the fence perimeter, but no restoration has been attempted. If you come here in the summertime and the weeds are high, you may run across a snake. You will need jeans and boots to get through all the scrub and stickers. Apart from a Texas historical marker, there is no additional information that I could find other than in the photos below.

This family cemetery is not far off from the busy 360/2244 intersection. It is setback about 100…read morefeet from Castle Ridge Road, which is about a block from that intersection. It was definitely established long before all this western expansion arrived. It is now surrounded on all sides by apartments, businesses and homes. However, the cemetery is not that old and there are no markers from the 1800s. Almost all of the headstones are recent or from a few decades back. It occupies about an acre full of weeds that are occasionally mowed. It is called the Brown cemetery, but the name Cooper pops up a lot here along with a few others. For the most part, this cemetery looks largely cobbled together with graves randomly laid out amongst the sprawling trees. There's a few graves that were hardly marked at all. There was a phone number on the gate, but no kiosk as to whom the deceased that lay here are. There is no Texas historical sign found here either. It is still an active cemetery with some space left, but it's unlikely to be open to the general public. As the photos and video below point out, this place is probably not worth visiting.

This cemetery was obviously established back in the late 1800s because today it sits on some very…read morevaluable real estate. In other words, when this graveyard was established, I 35 was probably a two lane dirt road with horse and buggies going back and forth. Today it literally sits on the northbound feeder road of I 35 and the corner of Dean Keeton with thousands of cars rushing by. It has two points of entry along the feeder road with a gravel road running through the middle of the cemetery linking both of them. It is at least 3 to 5 acres in size and there are hundreds of headstones. Much of the cemetery is organized into family plots with their surrounding borders. The cemetery could use some work, as the grass was unmowed, the trees looked really scraggly, the entrance gate was broken off and there were a number of toppled headstones. There are quite a number of graves from the late 1800s, but the majority are from the early 20th century. I spotted quite a number of woodmen of the world headstones, which are quite common in this area. There may be some notable names interred here, but I did not spot any. There are a handful of graves that have been visited in the last few months, but it's quite clear that many have long since been forgotten. I did spot a few graves from the early 2000s up to 2019, but nothing from the last year or two. Plenty of photos included to peak your interest.
