I've been here a few times during the holidays, and to see the Fourth Street Christmas lights!! The Nike Collective is the store I usually visit here. But there are other stores here along with restaurants and coffee shops. Seems like this is more of a place to hang out at to me. They had live music the time I was here. I got lucky and found some street parking, but make sure you feed that meter, the Berkeley meter patrol doesn't play. They are waiting for that meter to expire and they circle this area a lot!! read more

We were in the area visiting the East Bay Vivarium and saw the dangling lights/Christmas lights that were nearby and decided to take a look afterwards. It's very cute and cozy in the evening/at night, especially after the rain and with those lights. It's not a big street and there's a limited number of shops, but it's nice to take a quick stroll down. I'll be honest, none of the shops here are really from brands or stores I would normally shop at (lol rich people stores), so we really didn't stop by a lot of them and most of them were closing for the evening anyways (I have learned that lots of things in the Bay Area close quite early). There's some street parking and some parking lots but it looked quite packed. Not sure what it's like on a non-rainy day. read more

I love comí here and have ever since coming here with my mom. That was a long time ago. The shops have changed a lot and some of my favorites are gone (RIP crate and Barrel outlet, MAC, perfume shop outlet -forgot the name but they started selling powder makeup. I even miss the Amazon four star. Peet's is still here and the bathroom no longer smells like a urinal. So I'm willing to get a drink. Coming here to browse or shop is a joy and I look forward to it. read more

It's a pretty nice couple blocks to walk down if you have time. Restaurants, coffee shops, and stores. People watch and sometimes they have tent kiosks of people selling goods. Dog friendly. Pro tip: you might get lucky with street parking but it costs money. There's a parking lot at the south end of the street. You also have to pay but it's fast and easy. Then you can walk all the way down the street one side and back the other side. read more

Fourth Street Shops in Berkeley refers to 4th Street between Virginia and Hearst Ave, basically, 3-4 blocks of restaurants and specialty shops. Fourth Street Shops has been developing thru the decades. it isn't a shopping center per se. just a named street with add-on sections of nearby streets as the district evolved. there's an electic mix of eateries, boutiques, shops, retailers, et al. a decade+ ago, this area was a destination to source prestige brands. no more! same has been dispersed to wherever it is economically feasible now. Betty's Oceanview is an exception. still worth coming to 4th St. for Betty's. read more

This a nice, compact shopping district hidden in a primarily light industrial neighborhood. There are all kinds of small shops and specialty places along with some nice dining places. We used to come down here to eat at Ginger Island and Bette's Oceanview Diner (no view of the bay). What caught my eye was some of the specialty stores like Amazon, Peet's Coffee, Aveda, Bare Essentials, Sur la Tabl, Crate & Barrel Outlet, Amazon, Apple, Paper Source, Papyrus and many more. But even if you're not in the mood for shopping, go see the Holiday street decorations! They are gorgeous. And parking is fairly easy with a combination of small lots and on-street, metered parking. read more

I'm the Baron! Whatever that means!?! Fourth Street is a pretentious three blocks of retailers and restaurants. I lived on this strip for about four years and after moving to Oakland, I've returned only to a few places. Ramen at Iyasare is a staple of mine. No frills, just good honest cooking. George has a great selection of chews for my dog. 4th Street Flowers has been serving me up fabulous bouquets for years. Crate and Barrel Outlet always has a good selection. Sur La Table is pricey, but the service is always helpful. Perhaps the most intriguing thing to me is how some of these businesses sustain themselves. So many boutiques are here and while there's a bit of openings and closings, the stores keep afloat. Still not sure what a Yelp Baron is, however so be it. I do enjoy the Holiday Lights! read more

I love the holiday vibe they have put on this year, they put lights on on their trees and it's such a cheerful vibe. I love that this place is very convenient, its a street filled with shops, food, and a nice place for a stroll. This street is made up of 3-4 streets of shops and local retail. They have branded stores as well as small boutique stores. There's an apple store, lulu-lemon, Kiehl's, Sephora, Amazon store etc. Overall stores here have a great vibe. They have a parking lot in the back behind the shops which makes it very convenient. read more

This street used to be full of mom and pops shops, where you could go to enjoy the local community while shopping for artisan crafts, homestyle foods, and unique gifts. This has changed dramatically. It is now filled with mostly boring corporate businesses like anthropologie, apple, lulumon, and aveda. read more

I adore fourth street. It's so peaceful and serene. I usually walk here everyday. There's plenty of different interesting boutiques to shop in. Also some mainstream stores like crate and barrel, MAC, Bare Minerals, Petes coffee, etcétera... Usually every day there's someone out playing some music. Or the random homeless man that sells his art fixtures. Everyone is usually respectful of each other. True; parking can be a pain. Be careful because you will definitely get a ticket if you aren't reading the signs or feeding the meters. Be sure to stop by Teance for your free samples! Also 4th street bagels is another favorite. Review #164 - 2017 Who doesn't enjoy walking around Fourth Street Shops on a nice evening stroll? My only complaint is that parking is very limited, especially during the weekends. They have a decent amount of stores, restaurants & coffee shops. I haven't actually visited too many shops here, but I did enjoy the Christmas lights this year. I believe they use the same decorations every year, but I didn't actually come and visit during Christmas season until this year. The decorations are beyond beautiful! Still enjoy this place, and it's nice to see Bette's and a few other businesses still going strong 30+ years later. Lots of changes since I first stumbled upon this spot, and a few places that I loved are gone for good (O'Chame and Cody's Books). But, on a sunny Sunday, it's great to get your Peet's on and sit outside and enjoy the passing parade. It really is a little slice of Berkeley, all crammed in to one spot. If you are a tourist, this is a fun little spot. And for a former local gal, this brings back many fond memories. read more

Used to come here from time to time in my teenage years and then took my neighbor's teenage daughter here for coffee, ice cream and a stroll during her spring break. This is a fun place and definitely recommended during the holidays when the lights are lit up (her favorite part). However, be prepared to pay premium for parking, or be willing to park farther and walk. Plenty of artsy coffee shops, good eats, an Amazon bookstore, makeup stores, yoga centers, and fun boutiques. This won't be to everyone's taste, but it's fun to walk around here. read more

There's quite a few nice restaurants and shops as noted by others. It's a good way to spend a relaxing day strolling around. Helpful information - There's no public restrooms except for those in restaurants. There's one (just one) in Peet's. The day we were there, a long line of people waited only to be told - the toilet was overflowing and broken (yuck, right??) We went to Crate and Barrel across the street thinking there'd be one, nope. Same thing at La Sur La Table. We were pointed back to Peet's. Needless to say, we left earlier than planned. If this is going to be considered a 'destination place', there should be public accommodations. Otherwise, plan accordingly... read more

I still like 4th Street, although Cody's and a few other places are gone and the Spenger's lot is no longer free. Every couple of months I park the car and wander around for an hour or 2. I usually find myself at Bette's Bakery, Crate and Barrel, Builder's Booksource, the Gardener, the Ark Toy Store, Castles in the Air, and Miki Paper. The only things missing is the opportunity to share a meal with Gayle and not having Pete Olson's music to listen to in front of Peets. Parking remains tight and there are of course "established" personalities along the way. But this is Berkeley, and I enjoy observing various "creatures" in their native habitat. And if I really want to complete this experience (and analogy), all I have to do is walk over to the Vivarium on 5th Street.. read more

On Fourth Street, you can find almost anything you want short of buying a new car (you might by pure chance find someone selling their used car but unlikely). But need clothes? Check. Makeup? Check. A meal? Check. Coffee? Check. Apple store? Check. Trinkets? Check. Furniture? Check. Ambiance? Check. A reptile? Well, that's around the corner on Fifth Street I believe. Really though, Fourth Street is quaint and cozy and full or places to browse or eat. You -will- find parking a challenge though. It was love at first sight, me and 4th Street. After living in Berkeley for a few years and the dreariness of University Avenue and the attitude of Telegraph started to wear on me, I met 4th Street. He was classy but edgy, irrelevant but stylish, confident and slightly arrogant - but not to me. He had soft edges like the Crate and Barrel Outlet, comforting like a burger at Cafe Rouge, educated like Cody's. Too bad parking is a bitch ... that's just like the rest of Berkeley. read more

4th Street (or the "Fourth Street Shops") refers to the stretch of 4th St. between Virginia St. and Hearst Ave. in Berkeley. It's an outdoor boutique district with shops, restaurants, cafes, and specialty businesses. If it wasn't for the holiday lights, I'd probably give 4th Street three stars. The trees and lamp posts are wrapped with string lighting from top to bottom. The tree branches have a variety of light decorations ranging from colorful balls to animated icicles. The power lines that span above the street are also decorated with string lights along with giant snowflakes. It all makes for a beautiful, fantastical, and picturesque setting. Holiday lights aside, 4th Street has a neighborhood, small-town feel to it. The street parallels a set of train tracks one block to the west. I-80/I-580 are nearby so the shops are easily accessible. Free parking lots are located close-by. Circle around enough and a spot will open up for you. Most of the shops seem local and/or unique. Most prop their doors open so you can walk right in. They almost feel like open-air shops. Some of the bigger brands with store locations here include Apple, Anthropologie, Aveda, Crate & Barrel (and CB2), Paper Source, and Sur La Table. Apple actually has quite a big space. It's enjoyable to grab a drink at one of the cafes and people watch. I love Fourth St. It's a bit bourgeois-gone-Berkeley -- hairsprayed young mothers strutting along with their strollers behind the gray-ponytailed types who always clog the sidewalks. And the food selection is okay but not great if you want to spend under $10. But it's definitely baby-friendly (the trains are a big hit) and you can't beat having a MAC on the same block as Kiehl's and Rabat and Anthropologie. Parking isn't as bad as folks say. Try parking a couple of blocks away and quit whining. read more

Really it's just a great place to walk around and people watch. There are some yummy spots for brunch and lunch that I'd probably rate higher if I visited them. But the shops are mostly expensive or names you've never heard before but wonder why they're overcharging for one piece of whatever. Every place I've gone in, the employees are nice enough so that's good. Overall, it's just a small shopping spot in the middle of nowhere in Berkeley. It's an outdoor boutique district section in Berkley right off the I-80/ I-580 freeway, located on the opposite side of CalTran's train tracks. It offers free parking just around the corner from the shops with options for paid meters on the same street as the shops. The fourth street shops have restaurants, traveling boutiques, and cafés. One of the great aspects of fourth street is it has a small town feel just located outside of the downtown San Francisco area. Shops in this part of Berkley are on the higher end side but the the quality and the options of the products in these shops make it worth it. With an Apple store, crate & barrel outlet as well as a CB2 for the younger generation with funky taste in furniture, just to name a few. There are also other options. Options like a wide array of restaurants that serve American fusion, Italian, Etc...If you happen to go during the daytime you can find jazz bands playing free concerts for shoppers. When the holiday season comes around it turns 4th street into a charming shopping bizarre. Both sides of the street are laces with holiday ornaments and Filled with wonderful Christmas lights and sounds of the holiday season. read more

I certainly wouldn't dispute that it's a nice and easily accessible shopping area that covers a wide array of consumer goods. However, while the street is lined with shoppers' electric vehicles (EVs), don't expect an easy time of finding charging in the immediate neighborhood. They have three charging stations which are provided through ChargPoint, but they are woefully neglected, and only one of the three is actually functional. Gee, folks, this is Berkeley. Fourth Street is the most upscale shopping district in Berkeley, and one of the most original in the Bay Area. You don't come here to buy things you need, you come here to buy things you want. Located as it is just off Highway 80 and Berkeley's main thoroughfare, University Avenue, it draws well-heeled shoppers from all points of the compass. Don't be fooled into thinking it's just like any fancy shopping district anywhere, though; it could definitely exist only in Berkeley. It's an affluent, eclectic, caf-society sort of place, where people wander about in clothing that ranges in style from Mall D'ordinaire to Dreary-but-Noble and Simply Fourth Street (i.e., expensive and original). read more

A couple blocks of shops and restaurants. Quite a good place to spend some time. I live only a few blocks away from and often take my dogs for walk around there. And it's nice because most of the shops are dog friendly. The street is well maintained and nicely decorated. And people are usually pretty friendly around there. Overall: I would definitely recommend taking a walk down 4th street or trying one of the restaurants around there. read more

The Fourth St. shopping area is a nice retail district that is bounded by Cedar, Sixth, University and Frontage. Over the years, the area is developed into a vibrant shopping corridor that includes small and major boutique shops and eating establishments. There a couple of free parking lots nestled in between some of the shops, but they are usually full. That means metered street parking within the corridor or non-metered a little further out. There is a large paid lot across from the long time Spenger's restaurant. The center of the shopping area is the plaza area in front of Peet's. I'm here during the weekends and there's usually a musician performing and sometimes they have cute cats and dogs for you to adopt. The popular destinations are probably Bette's Oceanview Diner and the Crate and Barrel Outlet. Most stores are boutiques but two large names, CB2 and Apple Store have recently opened up shop here. A nice shopping area to spend a couple of hours to eat and shop. There's something here for everyone. read more

I am not a fancy shopper. I don't think something has to have a name brand or be expensive to be good so I never gave much thought to 4th Street . . . it's fancy. Shit is expensive for a poor pastry chef like myself. I do sometimes hit Sur La Snob for knives and such since they give a small professional discount and I used to be a straight up hooker for Sketch when it was open. But this Christmas I discovered something very important about 4th Street. . . it will SAVE YOUR LIFE on Christmas Eve. . . and you won't feel like killing people in the process! Everything opens at 8:30 which is a civilized hour. . . no one is wearing their pajamas - which seems to be de rigueur at local malls (and really who needs to see that shit first thing in the morning?). . . Open air. Peet's Coffee to stoke the shopping fires (altho that joint will be a mad house of cranky procrastinating bitches like myself!), Sur La Table for good stocking stuffers. The Pasta Shop deli counter for hors d'oeuvres, etc and other stocking stuffers and what not for your food snob friends. . . they also have Poco Dolce tiles at the cash register . . . if you walk out of there without an Aztec Chile chocolate tile to nosh on, you don't know how to enjoy life - it is AMAZING! Crate & Barrel Outlet - you can always find something cute, useful or just right for someone and the prices are wonderful. Jest Jewels - again, they have something for everyone. I have broken up with Restoration Hardware. . on a street of very fancy shopping, it has cranked up the fanciness to an extreme. . .I used to always be able to find something there but now, it looks like a Beaver Creek, Colorado super fancy home puked up it's belongings along with the pricey price tags. And although Galleria is somewhat cheesy, I am cheesy so I always find cute things that I like there. CB2 has cool little things for the hipster in your life - I think of it as the Pottery Barn of the hipster crowd. Books, Inc. opened there and while it's no Cody's at least it's an independent book store that you can support - I love book stores! This Christmas Eve on 4th Street changed my life. . .I was in and out with everything I needed in two hours. The key is to go early and get out! As god is my witness, I will NEVER set foot in a mall at Christmas again! I actually ENJOYED my Christmas Eve shopping trip. Who EVER says that? read more

Ever since I was introduced to this area in Berkeley, I've stopped by to take a walk around the shops, hang out on the patio at Peet's, or have a nice brunch at one of the more affordable establishments. There are a few things that are nice about the area: (1) Twinkling decorations for the holidays (2) Neighborhood festivals like doggie days, etc. (3) Pop up shops that "pop up" once in a while It's a cute place to hang out for a few hours, which is why you'll see so many people there, even on a weekday. I'm sorry, did I somehow offend you by existing? Did you actually not see me, or did you run smack into me for some other more obscure reason that I shudder to guess at? This is what I want to ask someone basically every time I go to 4th Street. People are so snugly wrapped in their bubbles of smugness that people will literally walk straight into you on the street or in stores because they 1) didn't see you through their rose-colored glasses, 2) didn't see you because they were coddling their lap dogs/babies/cashmere-hemp pashminas, or 3) saw you but decided that you being in their way was entirely your problem. I have taken to using elbows. Try finding a seat at Tacubaya at lunch without some strange encounter that makes your head want to explode, just try it. Admittedly, there are some good stores and restaurants on 4th Street, but I have to be in a very calm place to even attempt going there. read more

I lovelovelove walking around 4th Street! especially in the winter time when the trees and streets are decorated with beautiful lights... so colorful and bright. They have the best stores too... Sur la Table, CB2, not just a Crate and Barrel but a CB Outlet Store!, all the cosmetic and beauty stores you can think of, craft stores, scrapbooking, candy stores, tea stores, card shops, bookstores, travel stores, toy stores, and a lot more! Also on Sundays, the Cupkates truck is there! There's also very tasty places here including Bette's and other little cafes and places to kill time at when you are waiting for a table. I do however miss Sketch ice cream :( It's a fun place to shop and walk around when there's nothing else to do. read more

So back when I was in college I used to think that 4th street was an anomaly - a little bit of WASPy Walnut Creek in otherwise anti-bourgeois Berkeley. This is when I still lived in a one-bedroom with two roommates on the south-side of campus that upon visiting, almost made my mom cry and pull me out of school, a time when evil corporate empires such as Jamba Juice and Starbucks were not allowed within a one-mile radius of the campus and before I discovered North Berkeley, aka the Bo-Bo capitol. (Bo-Bo = Bourgeois Bohemian) Now I realize that 4th Street is quintessential Berkeley - that is to say, tailored to meet the tastes of opinionated, food-snob, bourgeois bohemians who scoff at corporate America yet shop at the Crate & Barrel outlet, wax poetic about egalitarian utopia but ignore the throngs of illegal migrant workers a block away trying to pick up work for the day, think that dressing in organic hemp clothing makes you a bohemian and ultimately, simply want to be left alone to think their liberal, hippie thoughts while shopping for ramekins at Sur La Table and imported cheeses at the Pasta Shop. I'm not saying this is a bad thing. In fact, I love 4th Street. It's the perfect place for a self-professed yuppie like me to spend the day, because when you think about it, there's really not very much difference between a yuppie and a Bo-Bo, except maybe 20-30 years in age. Grab some tacos from Tacubaya for lunch. Caffeinate at Peet's. Window-shop at Sur La Table and Design Within Reach. Pick up beauty products at Benefit, MAC and Kiehl's. Furnish your place with items from Z Gallerie, Restoration Hardware and Crate & Barrel. Get a double serving of the best ice cream in the world (Earl Grey) at Sketch. Pick up a new skirt at Anthropologie and some stationery at the Paper Source. Finish with dinner at Eccolo or Cafe Rouge ($1 oysters on Wednesday nights!). read more

I was depressed and lonely - not looking forward to my first friday in the bay area alone - when I stumbled upon a light...yes, it was...a MAC store. I felt almost at home...as fourth street is the closest I've found to my beloved Georgetown in the East Bay. I'd go to Union Square if I wanted the full on GTown experience, but for a quick pickme up of yuppiefied shopping, 4th street is the place. In particular - wow! to the Cody books, the bath products store and the Crate and Barrel OUTLET (why didn't I find this when I was buying stuff for my new place? sigh).
