We came here as a large group of 16 to celebrate my Mom's 50th birthday.
We all had the set menu afternoon tea, which in itself was nothing spectacular. The sandwiches were nice, although we had 2 vegetarians in our group and despite knowing in advance we still had the standard mix which included meat. It probably worked out better for me though as I had offers of trades for cucumber from all sides.
Next tier was a delicious fruit scone with cream and jam - pretty tasty - and at least 15 min was spent debating whether it is cream then jam or jam then cream. Then the top layer of miniature cakes. Aside from the fact by this point I was quite full I was a little disappointed, especially because everything LOOKED amazing. My macaroon was on the dry side and what I hoped was a chocolate brownie turned out to be something else of a more biscuit/chocolate base variety.
The real reason the Fourteas didn't get 5 stars though is because the tea, whilst delicious and of the loose leaf variety (I am also a tea purist) it is not unlimited.... or rather once you finish your pot and want more you have to pay for another. This is in contrast to all the other places I've eaten afternoon tea, especially the fancy ones!
Okay, out with the grumbly knit-picking.
The rest of the experience was wonderful. The whole place is decorated top to bottom with original/replica posters, storage tins and other memorabilia. My granddad particularly enjoyed reminiscing and on his good authority they have done a pretty authentic job. His one criticism was that there was no way the female staff would have worn dresses above the knee (which they were, just), apparently you were lucky if you saw ankle! However, should you like me, not be able to eat all your cake you can take it home in an amazing boxed gas-mask style doggie bag!!
The staff were also fantastic and so friendly. They happily bought out my Mom's cake with the candles lit and ALL gathered around to sing happy birthday. They also sneakily added candles to the cake stands of my Aunt and her partner who's birthday it was too! So a really big thank you to everyone at the Fourteas who helped us give them a special day.
The last thing to add is that on a Saturday afternoon you will be lucky to get a seat but they do take reservations. They were able to accommodate our large group and also made sure we could sit downstairs so the less-able of our party didn't need to struggle. Bathrooms are also on the ground floor and accessible but you will need to scale four or so steps to get in the front door. read more
