YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM This place could not be better! We found it in our hotel's listing of places to go, and their ad says they have great food at reasonable prices. They did not lie. They were so amazing we went there twice during our 3 day trip in the area. They have a great menu. Lots of chow mein, egg foo young and other dishes you would expect from a Chinese restaurant. They are in a strip mall location, and they don't have much in the way of decor, but they were busy, and do a lot of take out business. The restaurant was filled with locals, another good sign that we were in the right place. The food was clearly freshly prepared (I love it when the broccoli is a beautiful dark green and the carrots a bright orange, you can tell they haven't been in a freezer) and served steaming hot. The portions were huge and everything was cooked perfectly. My only complaint is that their 2 person dinner special, while a good deal, was a little too heavy on the pork dishes for my taste. But, as they have an excellent menu, this wasn't an issue. Next time we are in the area, a return trip is a guarantee!!!!! read more

This is my new local go to spot. The noodle soups are where it's at.. I usually get the cheapo combos but decided to try out the noodle soups.. 4visits later within 2 weeks I'm hooked on them. Super hot, tasty broth, great texture on the noodles and an abundant amount of crunchy tasty vegetables and meat. Best Chinese in Exeter and maybe Visalia. Staff is friendly, one worker is someone I recognize from when I use to eat at cantons and she's super friendly and attentive. My 1 and only gripe (which is trivial). Many years ago I dined here and didn't enjoy the food, so I wasn't exactly doing somersaults when my husband suggested having dinner here tonight. I caved and let him have his way, and promised to leave my negative attitude about this place at home. We arrive shortly after 5 and it's pretty empty. It's a very small restaurant, without much aesthetics. Our server comes over immediately to drop off menus, and take our drink order. We took a liking to her and the owner (who also came to our table a few times) right away. They were both very pleasant, bubbly, and made us feel right at home. We decided to start with the cream cheese wontons. They came out fast, and were fresh and hot. My only minor complaint was that they weren't crispy at all despite being heavily fried. They were not lacking in flavor in the least though. Next came my cup of egg flower soup. It was pretty good, but a little different than any other I've had before. It was much thicker and also contained potatoes, which I've never seen done. Next came our family style plates; seasme chicken, egg foo young, beef chow mein, and chicken fried rice. The seasme chicken was damn good, the sauce amazing, and the fresh veggies were cooked perfectly. The chicken was pounded thin, lightly breaded and fried. The egg foo young was just ok, the patties were pretty thick, and the gravy was lacking flavor. The fresh veggies that topped the dish was wonderfully crisp though. The beef chow mein was delicious! Nice tender strips of steak mixed in. Not too oily, or spicy. The chicken fried rice was also tasty. We ordered a to go meal for my son of the orange chicken. He honestly hated this dish. Said it was overkill with citrus. Only ate a few pieces. It looked very yellow like a lemon chicken dish. The best part of dining here is the friendly service and the seasme chicken. It was a decent experience compared to the one I had years ago when they were newly opened. While I'd much rather eat myself into an MSG coma at Lum Lums in Visalia, this place will do if I don't want to make the drive. Most of their menu is better than Mandarin house in my opinion. Ok so we went out to eat tonight. Which isnt always fun with a kid with autism adhd n o.d.d. we always have to leave early. But we went out to this lovely place in my town where the staff was just so kind and understanding with my son. He was standing most of the time and flapping his arms real fast as he does this constantly and it didnt bug them one bit. I said im sorry its hard for him just to sit still. N they said honey he aint no problem. Let him be him he aint bugging none os us. At any other place they would have asked us to leave. Not this place. So apparently they are under new ownership now. This place used to have the best Chinese food, can't say the same for it now. Ordered the sesame chicken which is supposed to be thin sliced crispy chicken tossed in tangy sauce. It used to be the absolute best item on their menu. Now it's just some poor excuse for orange chicken with some sesame seeds tossed on top. Their chow-main wasn't that great either, didn't think something so simple could be messed up so badly but they succeeded in excess. The restraunt is not that big, but you can still go and dine in with a couple of friends. the atmosphere is nice, quiet, and it has good vibes. The staff is very nice and welcoming. If something is wrong they will be gladly to fix it, but rarely anything is wrong. They know me every time I call because they already know my order, which shows how much I love going there. Staff: The staff is really friendly. They have known my family since i was 4 so we walk in and she doesn't have to ask what we want to drink, she can just get it for us. They are super friendly and interact with customers as we wait. Food: I prefer the letter C with soft noodles & no egg fu young. I have never once in almost 8 years of eating at this establishment had a bad order. The food is consistently good & always tastes fresh. The food comes out warm & is always clean of hair or other unwanted debris. Atmosphere: The service area is small but cozy. The seats at the table are set with a chinese zodiac placemat that makes waiting for your food more interesting. It does tend to be a bit chilly inside. It is decorated with chinese hanging lanterns & a few paintings. There are a few beer advertisements around the rub but they are interesting to look at & do have a chinese theme. Cleanliness: The establishment is clean & well kept. The only problem is the bathroom, to use it you must go through the back of the restaurant where the supplies are. My mother really enjoys her Chinese food. However, the nearest place (or we thought at the time) was in Porterville, which is quite a distance to go for a plate of chow mein. I had noticed this place a few times but never gave it too much thought until now and, through the use of technology, found out it was about 5 miles closer than Porterville. So we decided to give it a try. We ordered take out on two different occasions. For the price you pay, you get decent portions, and they have decent prices. The food was flavorful and filling. The pork fried rice and pork chow mein had decent portions of fried pork and vegetables but didn't feel like filler. I ordered the sweet and sour pork and received mouth watering nuggets of crisp battered pork, glazed with a sauce that was both sweet and sour, just as sweet and sour pork should be. Though the menu selection is a bit small, what they have to offer is cooked right. The only complaint made was that the wontons tasted a bit stale. The establishment itself is nestled in a small strip mall across the street from the Savemart in Exeter and has plenty of parking. As others have said, the dining area is a bit small; you wouldn't want to bring a group larger than 6 people here. There is little atmosphere to be had here. While a respectable effort has been made with the decor to remind guests of the origins of the cuisine, no one is going to forget they are in Exeter. However, this doesn't stop patrons from enjoying their meals in pleasant company. If you are from a larger city that has more variety, you will probably be disappointed. But for those of us who live here at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Fortune Cookie is a gem. Edit: a bit of an update, we tried this place again after they reopened.
