The Hot Sour & Spicy Soup...mind-blowing. Definitely well-named, as it is both very sour and very spicy. Just incredible. Service is slow but kind. Chow mein is also the best in the area, at least in my experience. After ordering I decide to use the restroom and on the way there I came across a booth with a TV, lots of books, toys, trash, etc. To me, it looked like someone was living there. My friend ordered the Almond Chicken and it was disgusting. The chicken looked frozen and rubbery, the veggies were almost brown and almonds tasted like plastic. I must say I was impressed. As a kid we use to frequent the Mandarin House. However, several years back it seemed to have taken a turn for the worse, the food quality was poor and the restaurant was just dirty all the time. We stopped going and hadn't been back in years. Tonight however our oldest son talked us into trying it (he'd never been, but loves Chinese food). It was delicious. We will definitely be back. Have eaten here probably 100 times in my lifetime. Tonight the hubby and I wanted Chinese, but didn't want to drive to Visalia. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken, egg foo young, pork fried rice, and shrimp combo. The sweet and sour chicken is usually crisp on the outside, however, it was mushy this time. No fried crispness... The egg foo young, was delicious as always, and the rice was just ok. My husband had never dined here, so he didn't know what to expect. He didn't care for his sesame chicken , as it had a smoky, bbq type flavor. Not even close to the best Chinese food in the valley, but much better than exeter's only other option (fortune cookie). We have been going to Mandarin since they were in Visalia. Very good food. I particulary like the BBQ pork, egg roll and pot stickers.

I love this place. Only picky eaters would say they don't like this place because they didn't like the texture of their meat, or what they got. I highly recommend getting the sweet and sour chicken lunch special, it is my favorite!! I come all the way from Bakersfield just to get food here because I'll crave their soup with some soy sauce or their delicious sweet and sour chicken! Make sure you come before 2pm to get their lunch specials because it is so cheap, and it comes with so much meat and fried rice! The lunch special even comes with a soup! The plates comes as cheap as 6.95 up to 9.95! I don't understand why this place would have negative reviews because ever since my first visit here, I have always loved their food, service, and how nice they are! I've even come in here and they have had to deal with customers that are so snobby and think that the world owes them, and I can hear what goes on because they have typical, snobby, woman voices and talk really loud! Lol The staff has always tried to substitute what you don't like to help you find something that you do love off of their menu, so if you don't like what you ordered you better speak up! read more

I was really excited to try Mandarin House. People had recommended it to me over the other Chinese food places in Exeter. The restaurant was a bit hard to find. Pine Street is pretty busy and always has cars parked along the street, making locating difficult (I had to drive by 3 times before I spotted it from the street). It is across the street from the cigar shop and the brick house gym. Parking wasn't too bad, but I imagine this area gets pretty full during lunch hours. From what I can tell looking at a satellite image, there is more parking available around the corner (down the alley from the restaurant). We ordered 3 take out plates. The menu has the typical staples of Americanized Chinese cuisine. Their prices are quite decent. The restaurant itself has plenty of seating, with pleasant décor (they even have a tank of live koi in the reception area). The staff were courteous to me and had my order ready for me for pick up. We were quite disappointed. The small portion sizes were the least of our concern. Everything was bland. I had the sweet and sour pork and almond chicken, so I cannot comment personally on the chow mein or rice. The sweet and sour pork had a decent texture but hardly any flavor. It certainly was sweet, but that's all it was. There was no sour kick to it. The almond chicken was okay, to say the least. The vegetables were decent and crisp. The portions of chicken had me worried. It had an unpleasant texture likened to that of cooked bubble gum, too soft and too chewy. While it was white all the way through, it had an undercooked flavor to it. My fellow diners commented that the chow mein was just as bland and had very little vegetables or meat. The fried rice was non-descript. The broccoli beef was overly seasoned with salt or soy and was unpalatable. I would only recommend this place if you really want Chinese food in Exeter and can't drive to other locations. I personally wouldn't order food from here again. But who knows, maybe they were having an off day; you might have a better experience than we had. read more

I absolutely love this place! Their food is so tasty and the portions are huge! I'm from L.A. originally and have lived in several other areas. Since Chinese food is my favorite type of food, I have been to so many Chinese restaurants, and I still think that Mandarin House can compete with just about any of them. Hey folks have I got advice for you..... stay away from this business known as the Mandarin House. The service is bad,restaurant and restrooms are dirty,carpet reeks stinky musky smell throughout the restaurant. The employees allow their children to play on the floor leading to the restrooms and they come up to bother patrons while they're eating. The food is really bad. We couldn't eat the Chicken Chow Mein. Terrible tasting brown noodles, a couple bits of celery for vegetables and only small pieces of brown chicken in it. Our recent visit as you read below will blow your mind!! Did I mention they are greedy? They are greedy!!!! But worse of all, we called in an order of pot stickers. When we got home there was no dipping sauce. I immediately called and talked to the Chinese manager who said to come back and she would give us another order.. well when we went back the next day to get the new order she tried to charge us for the pot stickers. I said you told us to comeback and we would get a free order. Oh no she said you have to bring the old pot stickers back and then we will give you the new potstickers. I said it was your fault that you didn't include the sauce and now you want to charge us again? Oh well that's our policy she said. I'm in disbelief that this manager would charge us 6.00 bucks for an order they messed up on. Of course I told her we wont be back ever again and she said well I have some numbers and addresses of other Chinese restaurants you can try. Is she crazy? She doesnt seem to mind that she lost two customers. No loyalty with this place and is this lady on drugs? Listen folks... boycott this place and maybe they will close down!! I went to Sequoia during the winter with my family and we asked them for some hot water to go with us to head up the mountains. When we got the bill, we were charged $3 for the hot water. They never notified us about the charge and just added it to the bill. We could have easily heated the water with our equipments, since we dined there, we liked to have some hot water for convenience reason. They said no problem and made it seem like it's no trouble at all. Very surprised to get charged so much money for just some hot water. Would definitely not recommend this place for the way they sneaked the charges in. read more

Best Chinese food in Exeter, hands down! It's delicious! I think it is run by a family whom used to live in LA.... so they do their best as far as the cuisine is concerned. There are two things that could push them into a five star rating... better in house ambiance.
