Strictly Bulk is a godsend for the terribly grocery-deprived Bloorcourt area. If you live here,…read moreand you aren't looking to go to one of the half dozen butchers shops or Shoppers', you will find this store very useful indeed. The store carries everything from organic laundry soap to bulk candy (whoo!). Despite the name, they do carry a few non-bulk and prepackaged items, including my beloved Fontaine Sante hummus. The prices are more than competitive, and they beat out the bulk sections of some of the large grocery stores nearby (such as No Frills at Dufferin Mall or the Sobeys at Ossington and Dupont). You'll never want to buy steel cut oats at Whole Foods again! The savings are definitely there, whether you are buying for a large family or just one person. You aren't paying for packaging, marketing, etc. One time, for fun, I compared my bag of whole salted almonds to the prepackaged brand at Shoppers, and the price came out to nearly three dollars more per pound (!) if I had purchased the Life brand. And they were on sale! Spices are another incredible savings, if you only need a few tablespoons of something for one recipe you will pay pennies on the dollar with nothing left to lose its potency while it collects dust in your cabinet for months or years. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They will always check to make sure that they are charging the correct price for your items. I noticed tonight that they just put their staff holiday stockings up, so if you're a regular try to show them some love! There are plenty of people who love this place so much they seem to hang out at the tables up front drinking coffee all the time! Watch out for their limited weekend hours, I have been mid-recipe cooking Sunday dinner and popped over only to have forgotten that they close at 5pm. Recommended buys: Fontaine Sante dips, handmade face and body soaps, veggie pate, grind-it-yourself coffee (I like the Turkish kind). Best value is in spices and staples (rice, beans, etc). Needs some work: Very small cheese/refrigerated selection, not the most kid-friendly store - today I saw a little boy accidentally spill about a quarter pound of pasta on the floor, and I watched in horrified anticipation as he gathered it together if he was going to take it to the trash can or put it back in the bin. He ended up listening to his mom and left it for the cashiers to clean up.

How does a supermarket get two stars. Well let me explain. I have given this Highland farms in…read moreVaughan multiple chances to redeem itself in terms of its downfalls. Their shelves are filled with expired sauces, and condiments. You have to look at each bottle as there are products that have been expired for months. The fresh chicken and I used that loosely, has an old odor to it. You always have to check the chicken before you buy it. Finally, my last straw was buying the pizza slices at their takeout counter. The undercarriage was raw in both cases and in both times that I've tried their pizza. It is absolutely brutal. I would give this supermarket a one star rating, however it is normally empty which I find benefits the customer. Not sure how long this location will stick around.

She finished the transaction but wanted to confirm it was done right so she called Lucy over. Lucy came over and told me to basically go away and call the number on the box of the item. I told her her associate already solved my issue and just needed a confirmation. She was telling me basically that Loblaws does not take accountability for items that aren't their own. One time, after she dropped off her car, we walked over to this store to shop and have lunch at Montana's. Ah, memories! Last Monday, I was in the area to attend a farewell dinner for a dear friend. I checked out the top floor. There are still cooking classes happening and the washrooms are there. You can either take the stairs up or use the elevator. This store is still massive. I like browsing the Joe Fresh clothes and seeing what's trendy, because I am not... haha! There were a decent number of reduced items, such as pajamas and sweaters.
