When the salesman first met with me at my home, he told me that there was hail damage. He also assured me that the dips and the uneven top of the roof was from age and that those problems would be corrected. He explained that I would most likely need new plywood in order to achieve this. I trusted him and scheduled a date for them to replace the roof.
That morning I was at work when someone claiming to be the foreman called me, and said his name was Paul. He said they needed an electrical outlet so that they could replace the plywood, and couldn't find one. That seemed a little strange to me, but I told him where to find it.
At 11:59am, Paul texted to tell me that the roof was progressing nicely and that they would be done at about 2:00pm. But when I arrived at the house at 12:10pm, they were pulling out of the driveway. One of them got out approached me. I thought he might be Paul and when I asked him he told me he wasn't him, that Paul wasn't there. I noticed that there were two big dips in the top of the roof, as well as small ones in a couple of different places across the roof, so I asked him about it. He told me it looks like that because I have a "tanga" roof. I asked him what that was, and he said that's just the style roof I have. He quickly took out his cell phone and started showing me pictures of the work they had been doing, what it looked like under my roof, etc. As he was scrolling through them, he stopped at a naked selfie of him. Naturally, I was very uncomfortable, so I told him I'd call their office to discuss the roof. I got in my car and drove away.
I spoke on the phone with both the salesman and Joy (who works in their office, I guess) separately, letting them know how ridiculous the roof looks, and I asked why the dips were still in the roof. I was told that fortified roofing doesn't do structural repairs. So I asked them what laying plywood is considered, and they both said that it's structural. Seriously?? Same EXACT conversation with two different people. I called them out on it and they had no defense. Joy finally agreed to send a foreman, Joe Tremel out to inspect the job the roofers had done. He conveniently showed up later than scheduled, knowing full well that I wouldn't be able to wait longer.
About a week later, I received an email from Joy which didn't even address the current issues. I couldn't believe it when I read it. She stated that Joe Tremel said that the dips existed prior to the roof being replaced. So what was the plywood for? And what kind of professionals leave an uneven main ridge beam intact? Actually, pictures that were provided to me didn't show a main ridge beam at all. But I'm not a roofer. I did consult with two other roofing companies who pretty much told me that my insurance company and I were taken for a ride.
So many things about this entire incident seem very shady. If I had been informed from the start that Fortified Roofing only replaces shingles, I would have chosen another company. My insurance company provided me with their license numbers, so I'm contacting both PA and NJ states to report them.
This has been an extremely disappointing - yet, enlightening - experience. read more
