I'm sharing my experience in hopes it helps other pet owners make an informed decision. My dog, Jack, was referred to Dr. Dean for orthopedic evaluation and underwent TPLO surgery on both hind legs. During all postoperative follow‑up visits, I was consistently told that his recovery appeared to be progressing normally. Unfortunately, Jack later developed significant complications that required care from other veterinarians and specialists. This led to additional procedures, extensive treatment, and a long rehabilitation process. Despite all of this, Jack continues to have limited mobility. He also has an ongoing issue with instability in his right knee, and rehabilitation for that side could only begin after the complications with his left leg were stabilized. After everything Jack went through, I reached out to Dr. Dean in good faith to share the full medical outcome and to ask whether there was any guidance, support, or perspective the clinic was willing to offer. I did not ask for money or make any demands. While there was brief acknowledgment of a misunderstanding, my follow‑up message received no response, and the matter was left unresolved. I understand that complications can occur in veterinary medicine. What was most disappointing for me was the lack of communication and follow‑up when things did not go as planned. During such a difficult and emotional situation, responsiveness and professionalism matter greatly. I really appreciate Dr.Dean calmness/expertise during Remmys consultation and Cindi being very caring and understanding (We need more of her in this world). I was overwhelmed with everything that was happening with my fur baby and they made me feel like I could trust them and I just knew Remmy was in good hands. They sent notifications when Remmy was getting ready for surgery, when they started surgery and also sent update pictures after. Them reassuring Remmy would be okay and sending updates help ease my emotions. 2 weeks late for his post op the mass they took out was not cancerous. My wife and I have taken two of our dogs(Minnie and Bitsy) for surgery with Dr. Dean. We had the first surgery done 5/2018 and the most recent one done 5/2019. Both of our dogs are very small(6-10lbs) Pomchis and they both had extremely large lipomas(tumors) in similar pelvic locations. Two other surgeons told us that due to the locations of the growths, it was very possible that serious permanent nerve damage could be done to them as a result of the surgical procedure. Over the preceding six months before locating Dr. Dean, we visited multiple vets(Abilene, Austin, Brownwood, Dallas) in an attempt to get an accurate diagnoses of their problem and what could be done. Several told us(with no lab tests), that it was "probably cancer" and they should be "put to sleep", but we obviously didn't quite trust those opinions. When we took them to see Dr. Dean, he examined them, performed the lab work and took the x-rays we had tried to get at other places. He told us it was obvious they were benign lipomas and even considering the delicate location, he thought they could be safely removed. We scheduled Minnie, who had the most advanced tumor for surgery, which was accomplished in May of last year. Minnie came through the surgery even better than we hoped and fully recovered in just a few weeks, with no complications whatsoever. At all times FWVS exhibited an extremely high level of professionalism and caring that we were pleasantly surprised about and very grateful for. We received regular updates while we waited during the surgery and the office followed up in later days to see how she was doing. They were also very quick to address any questions or concerns we had. It's been over a year now and Minnie is still a happy and healthy dog. When it came time for Bitsy's surgery, even though we had moved from Texas to Missouri, we drove her all the way back to Fort Worth for her surgery. Her procedure was performed just this last May. She is older and also has health complications from injuries received in a house fire several years ago, so we were even more worried about her than we were about Minnie. However, like the surgery a year earlier, it went great, there were zero complications and she fully recovered within a few weeks. The high level of care shown to us in 2018 was also unchanged this time around and again exceeded our expectations. It's now been 3 months, and she is not only back to normal, but seems to be in better health and spirits than she has been in years. Finally, while the cost of these surgeries versus what our dogs mean to us, made money a non-issue, FWVS quoted us prices for both procedures that were about one-third lower than several other offices we visited. These prices even included us opting for the use of a safer and more expensive anesthesia drug in both procedures. If, your pet faces a significant health challenge that requires surgery, you absolutely won't find a better place to take them than FWVS and Dr. Dean. read more

Missed diagnosis. My dog had an Arthroscopic procedure on both his front legs about 2 years ago at this facility. Approx 2 months ago I notice a sharp decline in his ability and willingness to do routine things. He had a significant downturn about 2 weeks ago with change in his gait and weakness in his hind quarter. Prior to this he has been off all pain meds for nearly a year and he's been able to run and play at the beach, pretty much anything he wanted to do. I took him back to Dr Dean to get his opinion and had his regular vet forward a plethora of X rays they had done just days before as well as the notes. He had my dog in another room and apparently during the exam (my dog is pretty vocal when he hurts)he nipped at him which is to be expected. Long story short he didn't seem to think there was anything else to be done and seemed pretty annoyed that my dog tried to bite him. He also commented that the XRays from my vet weren't usable or diagnostic. He didn't see anything wrong with him nor did the explanation of what I saw in him or his regular vet documented seem to help diagnostically. I took him to Dallas Veterinary Surgery Center a few days later as a last ditch effort. He had another episode when trying to walk falling over. Dr Sura only had seen my dog for less than 20 min and knew what the issues was. They did and exam under general anesthesia to tap his joints and found he had IMPA which is an autoimmune issue. BTW his regular vets X-rays were used diagnostically. He was started on immunosuppressive meds as well as an antibiotic just in case it was tick borne. His first dose was Friday PM. After his second dose Sat AM he was was walking and getting around like there had never been an issue. Today is Sunday and we went to the park and he was running with no issues. One star is too many. Dr.Dean performed surgery on our rescue pet's hip prior to our adopting him. After 6 months of being with us we noticed his hips weren't right. Took him to our family vet for xrays. Doc suggested we take him back to Dr Dean, as she believed he needed corrective surgery from the 1st. Dr.Dean insisted on taking xrays of his knee, and diagnosed an ACL tear. He recommended obedience training. By the way, the dog is only a year old. Doesn't take a degree to acknowledge a puppy needs obedience training. He also is not very patient, as he had nothing nice to say about our pup, and his behavior during his exam, which by the way was done completely in another room. We didn't even know they were going to examine him. We were told he was going back to be weighed. $210 for office visit & X-rays, wasted. Ya, he covered the expense of sedation, but I'd rather the dog not have been sedated at all. He insisted. They said they would send the knee xrays to us and our family vet. They did neither. It took 2 phone calls three weeks later from DVSC and us to finally get them. Dr. Wells at DVSC took 1 minute assessing his knee and determined there was no ACL tear by the physical exam. Then she took one glance at the hip X-ray and stated "You don't have to be a doctor to know that hip isn't right." I feel like Dr. Dean is out of his league dealing with small animals, as we were informed his education and background is in large breed animals. read more

Dr. Dean has done two TPLO surgeries on one of my Newfs. The outcomes to both those surgeries has been fantastic! I love that his staff keeps you informed during the surgery (by text) and let's you know exactly what is happening and how your sweet furry is doing. He also saw another dog of mine where a radiologist and vet said there was probably a CCL tear. He pretty quickly said that "This dog does not need surgery". She is now several months out from that appointment and is doing great. I appreciate that Dr. Dean is honest and can identify when and when NOT to do surgery. Dr. Dean in his staff are definitely a dying breed. I am so very greatful to him and everyone in his office. They did a remarkable job of taking care of my precious Peanut. Dr. Dean is like no other animal physician I have ever met. He truly cares about animals; it was very refreshing to have my love taken care of by people who cared about his well being more than they cared about my pocket book. I will never take my cat or any other future animal to anyone other than Dr. Dean. The only thing I don't like is that I can not make him my regular veternarian. ;) Its hard to find people like you Dr. Dean. I don't understand the bad reviews on here. I certainly cannot speak high enough about Dr. Dean and this wonderful facility. I was at a tough time in my life in late 2016 when my dog needed an expensive elbow dysplasia surgery here and it wasn't until recently when he needed an ACL repair done and had a bad experience at a vet in another state that I realized how one of a kind FWVS is. My experience with Dr Dean was great from start to finish and I can see his true passion and care for animals. He made sure my boy had everything he needed for his elbow dysplasia surgery and recovery and I can honestly say today that aside from the scar you would NEVER guess that he had surgery on that arm. He made sure to explain everything he was doing and showed great care afterward too to make sure Mowgli was on the right path to recovery. Before I ever got the official diagnosis of Mowgli's partially torn ACL, even after multiple exams at other vets, Dr Dean knew within 5 minutes of being in the room with Mowgli that something was off, was concerned and did X-rays and was able to tell me right off the bat. He is extremely knowledgeable and caring and I won't ever be going anywhere else now if I need it! Elbow dysplasia surgery isn't cheap but Dr Deans service is worth every penny and we couldn't be happier. read more

I don't like to give negative reviews but feel it's my responsibility to write about my recent experience with Dr. Dean at Fort Worth Veterinary Surgical. In early December 2018, my dog's (Coco) vet recommended a consultation at the center because of Coco's lame left hind leg. She was holding it up and stopped using it. Dr. Dean diagnosed Coco with a torn ACL/Grade 2 patella luxation and recommended an expensive ($3,250)/invasive surgery, TPLO and Patella repair ($350). In laymen's terms, a TPLO involves breaking Coco's leg and reforming her bone (YIKES!). My husband and I sought out a second opinion with Dr. Franklin at Gully Animal Hospital. After a thorough examination, Dr. Franklin assured us that Coco DID NOT have a torn ACL but did have inflammation that was caused by her luxating patella. Dr. Franklin prescribed an anti-inflammatory for three months. Coco completed her treatment and is completely back to normal, using her left hind leg without any difficulty. Either Dr. Dean is deceiving people for monetary gains or made a mistake by misdiagnosing Coco. I really do hope that the latter is true but this is hard to believe because torn ACLs are very common in dogs. In retrospect, I'm grateful that we got a second opinion and saved Coco from unnecessary surgery and pain. Hopefully this will help someone else and their dog. read more

From my first encounter with this vet hospital (a phone call), I was super impressed. I called on a day they were off (Good Friday) and Gail answered the phone. She was incredibly patient about answering my questions, explaining procedures, etc. She didn't even have to answer the phone that day, but she did. She was upfront about pricing, no smoke and mirrors, no $200 consultation before we can give you a price range like so many other places. I made an appointment for laryngeal paralysis and everyone in the facility was friendly, understanding and compassionate. It is a very clean place and very straight forward. Dr. Dean explains everything and is also very compassionate. I have never been anywhere like this. He is easy going and matter of fact about expectations and doesn't mind sharing some of his past experiences with similar surgeries. I went back for a follow up and had the same experience with a caring staff, an honest doctor and I felt like I had the best possible care anyone could have. I called several clinics before choosing this one. I'm so glad I did. Thank you for taking care of my lab/retriever and blessings to you, your staff, your hospital for a high quality, loving practice. Even my dog looked dreamy-eyed at Dr. Dean while we were talking.
