Received the best massage of my life today. I've been here before with a friend and loved it, but this my first time going solo. I had Hillary for my massage and she was attentive, hit all the right spots, and took her time. There were knots I didn't even know I had that she took well care of. Followed up my massage with a sauna session and when I tell you you have to do both... DO BOTH. It helped so much to ease the achiness that naturally comes from a massage that works all your muscles. It's a very meditative, relaxing, detoxing experience. I left feeling so energized, renewed! And all the staff were warm and welcoming overall. I will certainly be back! read more

I've had 2 services here as I was gifted a gift card. The first session I tried 60 minute massage, and based on the recommendation of my 1st massage therapist, I returned about a month later for a massage + cupping. My first massage was ok, solid but nothing that would have pushed me to return. She was kind, listened to my concerns, but I need very specific type of massage and therapy for my needs. She absolutely tried her best, it just wasn't up to par for me. My second massage with cupping was much better, from the owner Sara! Her technique was very good, and what I'm usually looking for. She did a great job warming up my body, slowly increasing mobility and stretching certain areas, and then isolated certain muscles and kneaded a lot of my tension out in the areas I expressed to her. I'm not sure if cupping actually does anything, feels more like a pseudoscience to me. But based on my experience, I would absolutely return for a massage with Sara. The space is absolutely beautiful as well, see pictures. I would recommend this business based on my experiences! I have not attended yoga or their sauna yet, so cannot comment on that. read more

I just had my second massage and cupping with Josielynn. Best I've ever experienced!!

Initially I thought I had the wrong address because when I drove past the address, it didn't look like a spa but after walking up their stairs, there is call button for the business. After pressing the button, the door is unlocked. The space is beautiful, serene, inviting, and smells good. The music and environment made me whisper automatically as to not disturb the energy of the space. I scheduled an appointment to spend time in the sauna and have a foot soak. It was right after completing a 10 mile race so I was looking forward to relaxing my muscles. The woman working at the front desk was very pleasant and available if we had questions. I should have notated her name to give her proper recognition. Myself and one of my girlfriends I brought along with me were assigned the sauna room for 2, two lockers to store our belongings; a robe, towel, and wash cloth. We were shown the changing room, shower, and toilet area available for our use during our session. The foot soak smelled wonderful. It was like my feet were in a large cup of tea and I love tea. :) I plan to come back to try out a sound bath session and offered on specific dates. (Dup review posted on Google) read more

A friend of mine told me about an Acupuncture and Sound Bath experience at Formation sauna + wellness. As someone that regularly gets acupuncture, I was excited to try it with the sound bath meditation experience. I was able to book my spot online and learned that the experience sold out! So glad I was able to secure my spot. The confirmation email I received the day of clearly outlined what I would need and how to find the building. I arrived about 15 minutes early, and was not the first one. I was kindly greeted and instructed to leave my shoes in a cubby and use some hand sanitizer. When it was time to get ready, I picked my spot and set down my own yoga mat on top of those they provided for some extra comfort. To start, we did some physical movement and stretching to warm our bodies up. Then we laid on our backs, which was a first for me with acupuncture. I have lower and upper back pain, so I am typically face down. I rolled my cardigan up into a ball to create a make shift pillow, which was perfectly comfortable. We were told what to expect and the sound bath meditation began. I had seven needles, two on each foot, one on my left arm and one on each ear. The sound bath meditation was so relaxing and beautiful. I was able to focus and reflect on the intention I had set for the experience. The space itself is really beautifully decorated, with an abundance of plants. I will absolutely return to try their other services! read more

I did a massage and sauna package. The massage by Hillary was great. She responded immediately to my requests for pressure adjustment throughout the service. She adjusted the temperature of the heated massage table too. The private sauna was nice. The cold plunge and cold shower are in a shared space so I was a little nervous/shy, but it actually felt like I was there alone! The other clients were quietly enjoying their services and the employees were available to me without hovering. The facility was clean. I've recommended this place to all of my friends. read more

I adore this spot! Sarah, the owner, is wonderful. I've been here for sound meditation, acupuncture, and sauna events and have always been wowed. The space is warm, open, inviting, and clean, definitely a haven in the city. The emphasize supporting the local community and businesses. Sound baths are wonderful - spaced out with free movement, intention setting, and breathing exercises. Be sure to arrive 10 minutes before the allotted time to settle in/ find a space. You won't need to bring your own yoga mat, but you will have to clean up. They also make it super comfortable if it's your first time trying any of these forms of self care - particularly the acupunctures I like to bring my crystals and a journal for the events. If this were solely based on the massage and sauna, this place would get 5/5. As others have noted, this is a relaxing, thoughtfully decorated, beautiful spot. My massage was done by Shakia, who was so kind from the jump! She was thorough, I felt comfortable throughout, and I left that massage room feeling like I was floating. The sauna facilities themselves are streamlined. Simple but effective. Okay, so my disappointment comes from the lack of hot showers, and the lack of communication about that anywhere on the website, or on the signs scattered around the sauna (in fact, there's signage encouraging you to take a warm shower when you're done), or even verbally by staff. I booked my appointments for right before a dinner I had to go to. Naturally, I didn't want to show up sweaty and damp. No problem, I thought, I'll just shower after my appointments. After I got out of the sauna and asked where the shower was, I was told it's closed due to covid. I get that precautions are being taken, and every business has a different line in the sand. But you're okay with people sitting inside a hot sauna, maskless, and taking a cold shower, also maskless...but not a hot one? You must be fully vaccinated to use the sauna. Why does that same logic not extend to a shower? I guess I'm just confused. Not to be that person, but I do expect more from a $160 + gratuity experience. Honestly, even if I'd just been told from the beginning that there were no warm showers/soap, I think I'd be less annoyed. But here we are (and yes, I am laughing at myself because this whole thing is a bit silly). But I do think the owners should let people know - either on the website, when appointments are booked, or by adjusting signs on the premises. read more

Formation is a much needed healing oasis in our city. Philly finally has a chic wellness space that includes sauna!! YES. The space is so well done and the massage therapists are incredible. Is there anything worse than getting a mediocre massage? You never have to worry about that here. Do yourself a favor and book a sauna AND massage...such a yummy combo! my sister booked a prenatal massage for me with Neanta and it was honestly awesome. i was a little nervous b/c i'm in my 8th month, but this woman works magic. she used firm pressure, which is so rare with massage, let alone prenatal. it felt amazing. the loft itself is really pretty and full of plants...nothing fancy, but calming. i highly suggest booking with Neanta if you don't want to leave disappointed. thumbs up! read more

Best massage I've ever had, and I've had many from various places in Philly as well as DC. FORMATION has a beautiful, calming aesthetic with gorgeous green plants. My aromatherapy massage was with Sarah, and even while wearing a mask the scent of the essential oils she used was so relaxing. Sarah diligently found and worked out every knot, pain point, and tension I had been holding in my neck and back. My partner and I booked massages together - Please note: they do NOT have couples massages, merely two single massages that occur in different rooms, simultaneously. Mine was barely passable, and his was verging on terrible. My massage therapist smelled like cigarette, which thankfully I only had to endure when I was lying on my back. His massage was ill-defined, consisting largely of arm-flapping-type movements. Major areas were neglected, and time was not used judiciously. When she did focus on his back, pressure was intense and uncomfortable, and this pressure continued even after several attempts at verbal redirection. We went for a relaxing experience that ended up causing more distress than it remedied. We ended up contacting them via email and received an anemic apology with a measly $20 off the next visit (there won't be one). There are simply too many better massage places at this price point, even Hand and Stone . . . read more

Before visiting FORMATION, I never considered myself a 'sauna person.' I also have been nervous to visit indoor establishments during COVID-19. Based on a recommendation from a friend, though, I visited FORMATION. It was immediately apparent how clean the spa was and that everything was sanitized thoroughly, The place is gorgeous and very spacious. When I arrived, the owner walked me through what to expect, including social distancing protocols, and she was incredibly warm and kind. I had gone on a long run earlier in the day, which left me sore and tired. After a 60-minute sauna experience, I felt rejuvenated and calm. I LOVE it here! I wish I could go every day. Perfect for a weeknight relaxation session or a weekend retreat with some friends. The owner, Sarah Hummel, does a fantastic job. The space is clean and she is so warm and welcoming. You get to hop back and forth between a 10-15 minute sauna and a cool shower (you will want the shower after being in the hot sauna!) The saunas themselves are gorgeous and made of the most delicious smelling cedar wood. There is no place like it in the city! Especially during covid times, our bodies and minds really need this. Literally one of the best massages I've ever had. I am a petite girl and I often find that when I don't opt for a deep tissue massage, the massage therapist is afraid to apply pressure-not the case here. My therapist did a great job finding the perfect amount of pressure to actually work out knots and make the massage effective and relaxing. She moved my arms to adjust my muscle position and throughly work out all the tension. Not to mention both therapists (mine and my friends) were so kind and welcoming.
