I used to buy sandwiches here and now they put hot sauce in everything. So just recently both chicken salad and egg salad were so hot and spicy that they were inedible. Why do they do this. Since they are not allowed to make sandwiches to order due to not having a restaurant license their sandwiches are out for me personally. However I do like everything else. read more

I feel torn about this place. On the one hand, it sells some absolutely yummy delicacies and many products otherwise hard to obtain. On the other, the prices are sometimes unbelievable. Take some object, like a small wrapped candy from Italy. Imagine it were expensive, perhaps three times as much as you would expect to pay. Now make it another three times more expensive, and you'll be getting there. I suppose this business model works in this area, but I always leave here feeling like my wallet has been violated. read more

Went to FK for the first time today. It's a foodie paradise - fresh baked breads, baked goods (including Lakota), tons of cheeses (lots of free samples and you can ask to taste anything you want), dried meats, gourmet coffees and teas, jams, etc. The store itself is very nice and clean, the staff are attentive, location is nice. Parking can be tough because it's all permit. I got a bunch of stuff to try - olives, a sheep cheese, Monin syrup, and some herbs/spices (sold fresh in small plastic containers). Love it! read more

I can't believe it's been so long since I've been to Formaggio Kitchen. I almost forgot how great it is! I was in the Huron Ave, neighborhood on Tuesday and stopped in to pick up cheese to bring to a friend's house. Their fabulous cheese selection has been fairly well reviewed so I won't go into all the details. Suffice it to say that they carry cheese from practically all corners of the globe, and the staff is knowledgeable and eager to offer recommendations. As I looked around, I was really impressed with the selection of olive oils. They carry some really nice high-end olive oils from Italy, Greece, Spain, France and the US. So I ended up leaving with a very nice Gouda (very different from what you typically think of as Gouda) and an olive oil from Napa Valley. Parking is a little challenging and prices are -- well, pricey -- as you'd expect from a specialty shop in Cambridge. All in all, great store, great selection and friendly folks. read more

An absolutely wonderful selection of breads, cheeses, meats and fruits. They also have an enormous selection of delicious pastries. This is a wonderful place to go when you are hosting a brunch, or you just want delicious, authentic european tasting, foods. I recommend their blueberrie muffins. My in-laws live in Cambridge and this is a frequent stop. Everything here is delicious , we frequently get sandwiches here when visiting and my in-laws often buy cheeses from here for while we are visiting. The baked goods are pretty good too. This place is a gem. read more

What a store! This is one of my food havens. I go there for their oreado chorizo, special liege waffles, cheeses, chocolates, variety of imported honey, breads and beautiful produce. I can easily spend hours at this store. So many interesting food to explore. Have you read their blog posts or updates on Facebook? Well, do it and you'll fall in love with them more. I love the fact that they spend a whole lot of time, effort and money educating their employees. It shows a lot about the model of their business. I once thought of offering work for free just because they really show their passion for food. I have not tried their barbecue Saturdays but I will soon. Also, a good place to go if you're planning of giving someone a food basket as a gift. They have lots of interesting and special items you can't go wrong with. There must be a shoplifting problem. I intended to spend several hundred dollars on food gifts. I walked around the store to get some ideas and was repeatedly queried by employees who wanted to know if I needed help selecting crackers or getting things from a shelf of not unusual height. Formaggio Kitchen... is set aside in a very unassuming section of Huron Avenue that happened to catch my eye one day when I saw some of their employees barbequing out on the sidewalk. I had heard from one of my colleagues who sells the goat cheese he and his wife produce that it is a great store and I just had not had a chance to actually check it out on one of my numerous trips daily past it on my way to work. Upon entering into the store I was stunned by the number of people that were there peacefully shopping... I say peacefully because it is not the place to go when you're frantically going to pick up items since it is very laid back and a place you stroll through to check out every nook and cranny because there are so many different items from varieties cheese to marmalades and jams to breads to specialty imports to nuts to wines. They also make a bunch of paninis, some are prepared ahead of time for you to just run in and choose one, and they do not last long because they are so popular. They are fully staffed and their employees are very knowledgable about their merchandise and are there to help you with anything you should need. For such a small store, they get a lot of merchandise, friendly help and advice, and it is practically an international adventure because you can see and learn so much. In a way, the store reminded me of an eclectic familiar flavor with an international spin reminiscent of the lovely little shops you will find in France and Italy. read more

We came by Formaggio Kitchen in Cambridge by chance, while riding our bike back from Fresh pond. The place sites right on the route and it is as if the road signs point you straight to it. In any case we were not sorry to have found this place. Formaggio Kitchen is a deli supreme. Pros: The choice of cheeses is just mind-blowing. The staff is knowledgeable and there are free samples and tastings. The baked goods are super. We were delighted to have found a good baguette. There are also many sausages to choose from and home-made style salads of all sorts. Cons: There are two cons in Formaggio Kitchen that made me give them 4/5 and not a full score. The first are prices. This place is really pricey. You do get high-end products, that is true. But you pay. The second issue drawback, in my view, is that at least as far as I could tell they do not have an option to have sandwiches made on location. I would have loved a sandwich from the great salads and cheeses I saw. read more

I love Formaggio. They stock hard-to-find cheeses, and I like the fact that they support a variety of small producers. The cheesemongers are very knowledgeable-- they know everything about their cheeses, from how long they've been aged to the name of the guy who separates the curds from the whey at the farmhouse. They're also super helpful when it comes to composing a cheese plate for parties. And then there are the free samples-- who doesn't like free samples of cheese?! read more

This place will blow your mind. A delight for the senses with so many things to see, taste and smell. Beautifully packaged goods from all over, gorgeous cheese, charcuterie, olive oils, vinegars, olives, wine, produce from local farms and lovely flowers. Yes, it is relatively expensive to shop there, but LESS EXPENSIVE THAN WHOLE FOODS, ZINGERMANS and WILLIAM SONOMA! I compared prices on Marcona almonds, Agrumato lemon olive oil, Alziari olive oil, and many mustards and vinegars, and found this place to be less expensive by 15% or more. The cheese is in impeccable condition (not at all dried out or past its prime) and there are typically 8-10 types on display for help-yourself tastings. In addition, the staff are happy to give samples of anything that piques your interest. The is THE place to get your dinner party/ romantic picnic/weekend-away goodies. read more

No doubt they have great products, but my boyfriend and I went in there and walked around for a good 15 minutes on a slow day and no one asked us if we needed help. Not friendly and not helpful. This is my favorite place, food-related or otherwise, in Cambridge. Maybe in the greater Boston area. I have a policy of limiting the time I spend in here to five minutes, to prevent an otherwise inevitable $150 bill. They absolutely give Murray's, Saxelby's, etc. a run for their money as far as cheese selection and knowledgeability , plus they have the best produce, chocolate, granola, ice cream, flowers, olive oil, and preserves in the city. Walking into this shop 5 minutes from my house was like walking into one of my favorite fancy food places in the Bay Area. I had a major flashback to all the good things about life in Oakland, which was much appreciated. Rancho Gordo beans, Anson Mills grains, an amazingly diverse selection of cheeses and meats.
