Delayed review for a group dinner many months ago with my dining club, but I wanted to acknowledge it because the food was phenomenal and deserves recognition since dining events are still able to be booked. I've been on the hunt for a reliable and yummy breakfast, brunch spot around town. This is definitely a go to. The food here is hearty and filling, and I don't recommend if you're craving a light or dainty meal. They have bottomless coffee and a range of savory and sweet options. The cinnamon roll is my new fave in town, and it's big enough for two to split. It's pretty darn sweet, so balancing with one of the less sweet options is recommended. I really enjoyed the breakfast quesadilla - I've never had one before, but it had a nice southwestern zest mixed with breakfast staples (eggs, chorizo, etc.). Had to eat at the bar because it was pretty crowded on a weekend, midday, but we didn't have to wait for a pair of seats. Will definitely be back! read more

We came not knowing it was happy hour and really enjoyed the drink specials going on and the reduced price appetizers. I got a Tom Collins and my husband got an Old Fashioned. We shared the cornbread appetizer per the recommendation of the server and it was amazing! We embarrassingly ate the whole thing within minutes. Our entrees were decent, it was beautifully plated but thought it was overcooked and the pork was a little dry but the sauce helped make up for it. The service was great! Our server was very attentive and checked up on us frequently. The indoor was quiet but we came early to beat any crowds. We are interesting in trying breakfast/brunch here next time! read more

Fantastic food! We sat on the patio, great ambiance. The food though, I cannot say enough about how delicious. We have found a new favorite!

More like a 3.5 but we had a great time with the cocktails and service was great. We made it 15 minutes before happy hour ended and they let us order drinks from the menu. I got a Manhattan to start and finished with a old fashion. Both were made extremely well. Very good. As for food, we got some apps to share- mussels, fritters, Caesar salad. I really enjoyed the mussels. The fritters were ok. My short rib entree was very dry and flavorless. The meat was tender yes but there was no seasoning. My husbands beef Stroganoff was made from pappardelle and it was delicious! I took my short rib and dipped in there for flavor and sauce. The short rib definitely needs a sauce and some love. We ended with 2 desserts. The Creme brûlée was an off menu and had something else in there. It was interesting. Chocolate cake with ice cream was good. I wish I wasn't so exhausted coming to Fork & Barrel because it was one of my favorite (and fancier) stops on this trip! There was a group of 15-20 of us having dinner after a whole day of bar hopping. The restaurant was full but in a way that made it feel lively instead of crowded. Service was fantastic throughout the experience. While I couldn't stomach any more alcohol, I enjoyed one of the best Beef Stroganoff dishes ($28) I've ever had. The amount of food, flavor, texture, just everything was perfect... especially the cream on top. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal too. Would love to come here again with more energy and have some wine or cocktails to go with my food! read more

I'm so glad we found this restaurant during our time in Louisville. I was by far the best food and service during our stay. We made a reservation and came in for an early dinner around 5-5:30pm. At the time we arrived it wasn't very full yet but that quickly changed. Our waitress came and we ordered drinks. Of course I had to have bourbon because when in Kentucky. We also ordered a couple of appetizers. Went went the the Pimento Cheese Board and the Deviled Eggs. The Cheese Board comes with House-Made Sharp Cheddar Pimento Cheese, Exum's Smoked Country Ham, Pate, Assortment of Pickled Vegetables and Accompaniments, Grilled Baguette. Everything on it was so good. I will say Pimento Cheese is one of my favorites so I couldn't start eating it. The deviled eggs were also amazing. Easily some of the best I have ever had. They were so nice and creamy. Like a mentioned before the service here was amazing the owners came and chatted with during our time at Fork & Barrel. They each made sure to come by and spend about 10 minutes each just chatting with us. It don't make us feel like we were out of town at all. For my entrée i ordered the Short Ribs. They were amazing. Full of flavor and folk tender for sure. The sides that came with it were great too. I don't even really like carrots but I ate all the ones that came with the dish. Everything just paired so well together. Like a said best restaurant we went to in Louisville but also one of the best restaurants I have ever been to period. You have to check it out. read more

My book club decided to try Fork and Barrel. I had the Caesar salad with grilled chicken and the sweet herb vinaigrette dressing. The portion size was solid, and it tasted good. The service was slow, and the server didn't check on us, even though it wasn't crowded. I still look forward to going back and trying a different item from the menu. read more

While on a recent visit to Louisville, the Fat Man, and his wife went to Fork and Barrel, a refined Southern fare with artful touches served with craft cocktails & wine in a rustic-chic space. I ordered a Where The Buffalo Roam, made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Aperol, lemon juice, honey, Orange & Aromatic bitters, and egg white. The lemon and bourbon come through first, followed by honey and Aperol. The drink is strong and finishes with the bitters in the back of the throat. The egg white gives the drink a frothy mouth feel. For our appetizer, we ordered Pork Belly. This is made with pork belly, green cabbage slaw, Mango purée, and pickled red onion. The mango purée was sweet and cuts through the meat. The slaw was crunchy, though the pickled red onion was missing. The pork was cooked well and a little crispy on the edges with a slight chew. This was flavorful and tasty. My wife went with the Pork Chop for her entrée. This was made with a grilled prime pork chop, compound butter, braised kale, and au gratin potatoes. The potatoes were excellent, creamy, and cooked well with a little crunch on top with excellent hints of garlic and Parmesan. The kale was salty and tender with a subtle sweetness. The flavorful pork bits stand out with a slight chew. The pork chop was perfect. Juicy, tender, and packed with flavor. The butter put it over the top, and the seasoning was outstanding. For my entrée, I went with the Short Rib. This is prepared with red wine braised beef short rib, mushroom risotto, hand-carved maple glazed carrots, grilled asparagus, natural reduction, and crispy potato strings. The asparagus had a good char on them and were a little crunchy. The carrots were tender, and the maple added a slight sweetness. The risotto was cooked well and very creamy but desperately needed some seasoning. The rib was cooked tenderly with a nice sauce offering a slightly creamy texture to the bite. The crispy potatoes provided a nice crunch texture as well. Fork and Barrel offer a complete dinner menu with appetizers, desserts, soups, salads, and several entrées. They have a full bar and offer craft cocktails and wine. I highly recommend a reservation, and the staff was excellent. The Fat Man says that Fork and Barrel is Fat Man Approved with 3 chins. read more

I'm adding this restaurant to my list of top Louisville restaurants. Amazing everything. Service, food, ambiance, cocktails and wine. Everything was a knock out. My salmon was beautiful, my daughter loved her filet, my son-in-law devoured his pork chop, and we all were sneaking fries from my husband's smash burger plate. Even the pot de creme was delicious. Had a pretty lackluster meal at Fork & Barrel this weekend. This was our fourth visit, but our first to the new location. I want to preface that all our previous meals have been phenomenal; this particular trip was very disappointing. None of our cocktails seemed to be well-balanced, and there wasn't a single good entree in our group of 6. The pros we're definitely our server - he was fantastic! The side salad was very fresh (I call that out after having a number of bad salads in my recent dining history), and pet of our party enjoyed the pork belly appetizer. However, the spring pea risotto was awful - it tasted like rice had just been mixed with cream cheese and there was no seasoning to speak of. My salmon was over cooked and my partners beef stroganoff (one of our favorite dishes from past trips) was bland and the pasta was undercooked and doughy. One person sent the octopus back. Overall for the price point, the quality just wasn't there. I'm also not a fan of the new location. For this upscale of a restaurant, it doesn't deliver on ambiance like the previous location. Parking is a plus, but this location has always had a causal feel that has been more suited to its previous tenants that catered towards breakfast and lunch. We will visit again because we know all places have off-nights, but I'm really disappointed in our experience. read more

A new friend invited me to join him for dinner at Fork & Barrel on a weekday evening.  Having never even read a review of this place, I approached the date with cautious optimism.  It turned out that my caution wasn't necessary - our dining experience from beginning to end turned out to be nothing short of phenomenal! Everything was amazing and special.  From the Chef's multiple stops at our table to check on us, to our friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and attentive server, we couldn't have asked for better service.   Each and everything dish we tried that night was beautifully presented and tasty, but two dishes stand out in my memory: - We started out with an appetizer recommended by our server - the Charred Octopus.  My previous experiences with octopus made me suspect the dish would be chewy and tough, but it turned out to be neither - it was amazingly delicious!  Apparently preparing the dish via char-grilling is a superior technique :-) - The Pork Shank was simply out of this World!  It was made with an exceptional, mustard-flavored sauce that perfectly complimented the taste of the pork; the meat was perfectly seasoned and cooked so that it was so tender it literally fell off the bone. To sum things up - if you're just visiting the area then Fork & Barrel is a "don't miss it" attraction.  If you live in Louisville, you need to seriously consider adding this place to your regular rotion :-) read more

I love this restaurant because you can have a 4-course dinner here alone and enjoy it. It's one of the few restaurants in Louisville that cater to people who dine alone. I have dined here 3 times in the past one year alone, and each time I have been entertained by the waiter and/or bartender. Of course, the food here is always fabulous. I enjoyed the brisket appetizer and the salmon as my main entree. The salmon was cooked perfectly. I always worry about my seafood being overcooked. You don't have that worry at Fork & Barrel. I immensely enjoyed the Brownie dessert which came with a toasted marshmallow on top. I requested mine burnt and they did a fine job of meeting my expectation just for that. Their old-fashioneds? One of the best I have tried in Louisville. The ambiance of the bar next to the dining area gives it a cozy feeling. read more

This was a place I'd been wanting to come to for a while, and on burger week my family and I just had to stop in for their pimento burger. It was not only phenomenal, but they allowed for modifications on their burger which many places don't on burger week; I was very grateful as someone who hates pickles! We also tried the brisket and queso as an appetizer, which we loved every part of. For sides, we tried the fries, mashed potatoes, and brussel sprouts. The fries were the fan favorite. The brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes were good but a tad bit bland. Someone also tried a sangria which was good but very citrusy! Overall, the food was good and left me wanting more. However, the most delightful part of the experience was our wonderful server Brittany. She was so kind, helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. She truly made the experience for us! The place itself is super cute with fancy decor and Id love to go back and try more than just their burgers. read more

The food and wine here is pretty decent. I got the shrimp and grits which were actually really good.. it had fried zucchini and andouille sausage on it and had poblano cheese grits. YUM! What I was more disappointed with was our waiter. I think he was trying to be funny, but he came off very rude and off-putting. He was also extremely slow when the place wasn't crowded at all. When getting our cocktails from the bar, he would go grab one, slowly walk it to the table, turn around and go get another, and so on. I was astonished watching this... Fork and Barrel was a lovely experience. On a previous visit, we stopped her for breakfast at Morning Fork, which we loved. We didn't realize until we pulled into the parking lot that Fork and Barrel were in the same spot. They are two restaurants in one building. Check the website for hours for each. And try them both. I had the Pork Chop, and my wife had the Fish Stew. That was on special that evening. The fish stew was spectacular. The pork chop was delicious, but the scalloped potatoes stole the show for me. I grew up eating scalloped potatoes at every family gathering. I never loved them and, most of the time, hate them. These were not my Grandma's scalloped potatoes. It was a stack of thinly sliced potatoes with a ton of flavor and a good balance of creaminess. In addition to the food, the staff was excellent. The owner/Chef Geoffery was visiting the tables during his time in the kitchen. He took the time to ask us about our experience and tell us a little about his restaurant and dishes. Not to say everything was perfect. Our waitress placed our drink order at the bar but forgot to bring them out. We only got them after asking the bartender. The bartender and the waitress apologized, went a step further, and comped our drinks for the night. I appreciated how they handled the mess up. Not because it was free, but because they acknowledged the issue, explained how it happened, and offered a solution before we asked anything. We can't wait to visit again on our next trip to Louisville. read more

Fork & Barrel was one of our "fancier" dinners on our trip. Most people err on the smart casual side, but there were folks very casually dressed too that didn't seem out of place. The place seemed like it was make for fall with the warm lighting and dark pumpkin colored banquettes. The only thing I didn't like was the TV over the bar, it was totally unnecessary & the coming show on it kept distracting our date. We started out with the lobster fritters and drinks. The lobster fritters were shaped more like hush puppies and very tasty. I think we each got about 5-6. Neither of us was particularly with the cocktail menu. Husband went with a bourbon drink that came up & was frothy from egg white. I ordered a mocktail, but got the alcoholic equivalent. I thought I recognized my distaste for bourbon (I know) in the first sip, but my husband swore he didn't taste bourbon, just ask the ginger. I took him at his word and unenthusiastically sipped my drink. I didn't realize I was right until I saw the check and think my server assumed I got the right drink. Anyway, that was a lot of words for something that in the grand scheme of things wasn't a huge deal since it was preference, not necessity to skip the booze. For our mains, I got the Covrvina and husband the pork chop. I'd never had corvina before, but it was quite tasty and came with spaghetti squash. My husband enjoyed the pork chop & said the kale was the best he ever had. Probably something to do with the bacon braising. For dessert we ordered the brownie, which was decadent. We were offered ice cream alongside it and declined, but received it anyway. I'm not sure if our server had too many tables, but there were definitely details missed and an awkwardness to the cadence of our interactions. Disappointed in The Fork & Barrel. Our small group dined there this week. We had a early reservation, not at the peak time. First the good points. Ingredients were fresh. Appetizers were very good and included the Deviled Eggs and the special fried green tomatoes. Entrees were also good, portions were moderate. The rest: three of us never received extras sides that were ordered with meals. Well, one came out after everyone was finished. One person asked for her soup 3 separate times, but was never received. We were never asked if anything was needed, or if everything was Ok when orders were brought out. Some meals came out about 30 minutes after the first one. Checks were a mess as well and included a automatic 22% tip. Which I wouldn't usually have an issue with. read more

I have wanted to try Fork & Barrel for a long time and we finally did last night. The food was definitely worth 5 stars. The service, while not bad was a bit slow even though they weren't busy when we arrived and seemed a big unorganized. The restaurant itself was very pretty and had nice ambiance however we were there as the sun was setting and they couldn't seem to get the lighting right. At first it was pretty dark and then the lights were turned on and then it was as if someone kept playing with the dimmer switch the entire time we were there. It wasn't a huge deal but was a little distracting. I started my meal with the Gin Rose cocktail which was Gin, Rosemary Simple Syrup and Lime juice and it was very good. We ordered the Southwest Wontons for an appetizer and they were delicious they were filled with a tasty blend of chorizo, beans and melty cheese and were exactly what I was hoping for when we order them. Next I had the French Onion Soup which if you have read any of my other reviews you'll know is one of my favorite things and this was definitely no exception. It was cheesy, and the broth was rich and velvety and so tasty. I would 100% return just for this. For my entree I had the short rib with mushroom risotto, carrots and asparagus and it was very good as well but the short rib was bordering on slightly dry. The risotto though was awesome. For dessert we shared the Triple Chocolate Brownie and it was very tasty also. My husband enjoyed his Filet of beef and Caesar Salad also. Mixed review service was great but I was disappointed with the French toast that was done with homemade banana bread. I found it light on flavor and for 17 dollars two strawberry's cut in 1/4 's with a half dozen thin slices of bananas was a sad presentation. I had been meaning to check out this restaurant for dinner but finally did when a friend chose it! We came on a Thursday evening around 8, not realizing that it closes earlier on Thursdays. My sister and I split a Caesar salad and the burger. I was stuffed! It was all so good! Everything was presented well and delicious! The burger didn't come with a bun, but rather some type of flat bread situation. Creative way to help us eat less carbs. Both my friends also got burgers and couldn't finish. It was huge! Thick burger! Service was splendid. They filled up our waters and tea whenever needed and our waitress didn't rush us even though we were last to leave the restaurant. The staff couldn't have been more fantastic! We got greeted at the door and everyone bid us goodbye. Loved it! The dessert here looks good. I saw some folks order tiramisu and panna cotta. I'll have to come back and try it! The menu isn't huge but looks like they can accommodate for allergy issues. They also do a split charge of $3 if you make them split the food in the kitchen. My sister and I halved the meal ourselves so we only needed the extra plate that our waitress gave us. It seems like a fancy place, but I saw guys wearing jeans and UofL apparel at the bar. I think the dress code is at least casual nice. It's not white table cloth but the host had a tie on, so I think you should at least look decent here. Lots of people seemed to come on a date. To Fork & Barrel on Frankfort Avenue in Louisville. Disappointed Chef Geoffrey Heyde didn't stop by our table. Fork & Barrel prides itself on serving upscale American cuisine with a focus on local ingredients and southern hospitality. We start with the Charred Octopus and Lump Crab Cakes. For entrees, we both went with the amazing Stroganoff with super tender beef tips and pappardelle pasta. Better than homemade! As great as the food was, the portions were a little small for my tasting. Time for a side of yummy fries to make me fill full. Dining on the Tuesday following Memorial Day, we almost had the restaurant to ourselves. On Tuesday they do a special Taco Tuesday menu item. That seemed to be odd given the rest of the menu. But if you're into that cuisine, it's another reason to visit this intimate dining spot. read more

Visiting from St. Louis, Mo. We started out with a couple high end bourbons to whet our pallet, along with the Langostino lobster fritters as an appetizer. These hush puppy-esque bites were in a word, delicious. The lemon garlic aioli... sheesh, if I pass you a 20 will you pass me back the recipe? Cause I need more of this in my life. For our bourbons we got Kentucky Owl and by the recommendation of the manager after our first choice was out of stock, Old Carter. Kentucky owl is something I've been wanting to try for sometime and may pass on in the future; bold and full of interesting notes for sure, but just a tad too hot for my taste. Old Carter was smoother than smooth. Almost buttery like a Chardonnay. I will be seeking out a bottle of this when I get home. For our entres my wife got the Vegetarian ravioli and I got the filet. We shared a side of white cheddar grits. Entree drinks, a refreshing rosé and an eagle rare boulevardier. The ravioli was bursting with satisfying flavors. Pasta was prepared traditionally al dente, creamy and perfect. The filet was cooked to a near perfect medium rare and melted in my mouth. The au gratin potatoes were incredible. We skipped desserts but did get one final set of whiskeys to cap off our dinner. She got the Basil Hayden dark rye and since I loved the old Carter bouton so much, I tried the rye as well. We're familiar with the basil Hayden, so we new what we were getting ourselves into. The old Carter was equally delicious. However I will add, as someone who typically leans more toward to hot spicy eyes, I uncharacteristically enjoyed the bourbon more. Our server was Libby; She was knowledgeable, polite, personable and attentive. She didn't hover but also never seemed out of sight or unavailable. A rare talent in these times where good servers are hard to come by. Overall, our first experience in our weekend in Louisville set the bar high, very high. We cannot say enough great things about Fork & Barrel! We went for Sunday brunch. It was crowded so we sat at the bar. Hands down, the best seat in the house! Not only were the bartenders friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive, but the bar is well stocked. We splurged on a flight of Weller. I had the veggie breakfast burrito and my husband had the bagel with salmon. Both dishes were excellent and generous (I took half home). The proprietor, Jeffrey, made us feel welcome and introduced us to the "regulars" that sat with us at the bar. The restaurant is clean, well lit, and casual. What a delightful meal! My first thought of place was how intimate the vibe was. You're probably a server, but it didn't matter who's serving you because each one is accommodating. I ordered a Paloma cocktail to begin, and it was nice drink to start my evening. I wanted to go with the Salmon for my entree, but I was torn between that and the burger. Fork & Barrel was as good as I hoped it would be from the time we walked in the door. The hostess greeted us and we were immediately taken to our table. We quickly met our waitress and she was attentive and friendly while not overbearing. It was our first time there and she explained the specials, menu, and gave us a wine recommendation that we were on the fence about. Her excellence continued until we left and they had a veal special with bone marrow on Friday which was excellent. Zucchini fritters were the appetizer and the other Yelpers were right about the Brussels sprout salad, we split it but I wish I had one for myself. The price was right and I debated on a 5 star for this place but I rarely give those out. It was a solid 4.5 stars and I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

When a fellow Yelp Elite (hi Ellyse!) suggested dinner at Fork & Barrel, I was excited to say yes. F&B has been on my list for awhile to check out. And the evening at F&B was fun. I'm excited to go back. We started with the Charred Octopus, which included Capriole Farms goat cheese polenta, mixed greens and olives. I like all of these components separately, and somewhat surprisingly, they worked well together. The chewiness of the octopus worked well with the texture of the polenta, and the slight sweetness of the polenta was accented by saltiness of olives. And then for my entree, I got the stroganoff. This contained beef tips, veal demi, mushrooms, creme fraiche and pappardelle pasta. The beef tips were large and tender. And I liked the sauce, though it could use a bit more salt and maybe pepper. F&B has a lengthy drinks list, and the service was attentive. Our appetizer came out within 10 minutes, and our entrees were not far behind that. I also appreciated that our server and the GM came over to check on us a few times. There are several other items on the menu I'm eager to try, including the burger, fried chicken and scallops. I just recently visited here for the 2nd time. The first, we had a large party for brunch to celebrate my birthday, pre Covid, in 2019. I don't believe they are currently serving brunch now, probably due to Covid. At that time, service was great, especially for our large group, and I recall the food being well received by everyone. I went the other night for my 2nd time. The tables are well spaced out for Covid so that shouldn't be an issue for those that might be concerned. Our service was sub-par. You could tell she really wanted to provide great service but just failed at executing it. At one point, she was to bring me another glass of wine but completely forgot and asked later if I needed another. I didn't have the heart to tell her that she had forgotten. But just getting another glass of wine, at any time, seemed to take forever so I don't know if that was the waitress' fault or the bartender... or if the waitress had to play bartender due to (maybe) a reduced Covid staff. The restaurant was full but remember, it's still not crowded because they are at reduced capacity. I believe our waitress only had 2 tables. I decided to get the special of the night, which were (I believe) pork and cheese meatballs that I was sold on by the waitress. After debating and finally deciding on that, she had to come back and advise that they were sold out. Our dinner reservations were at 6:30 and the restaurant didn't even open till 4 so I'm quite surprised that they would be sold out by 7 when we ordered. If so, then they might not have been adequately prepared. I changed my order to the crab cakes and wanted to add a side to it. The risotto was highly recommended. I'm usually a fan of risotto; however, these were not good in the least. I believe it was a shallot/onion and pea risotto. I really tried to eat it but just couldn't. Very bland. I advised her that I didn't like it and just asked for fries, to keep it easy. The fries were fabulous! They were fresh cut and tasty. The crab cakes were wonderful too. They were served with mashed avocado and a chopped cucumber relish of sorts. The crab cakes are on the appetizer menu so it's not a lot if you want it for your meal, which is why I added a side with it. My friends had the salmon and filet. The friend with the filet loved her dish, which was served with au gratin potatoes and brussel sprouts. I did taste her brussels and they were quite tasty. I should've gotten that as a side. My friend with the salmon said that the salmon itself was great but it was served on top of that same risotto that I had. She absolutely didn't like the risotto either so that was left handsomely on her plate. The menu didn't list the risotto with her salmon but that's what she was given. The lights dimmed around 7 and seemed to get brighter and dim constantly... it became slightly annoying! Not sure if there was an electrical issue or what was going on. The restaurant interior is nice and is in a great location with good parking available behind the building so you don't have to worry too much about finding a spot on the street. Despite my issues with my latest visit, I will definitely go back. I will just steer clear of the risotto and hope for better service... and maybe those lights will cooperate. :) The only picture I got was of the crab cakes! read more

Went for brunch and had a lovely experience. They have a tent out back for safe outdoor seating, and all servers were great about wearing masks. I may have found my new fave Bloody Mary in the city--their recipe includes horseradish and it is deelish! And, for $5 it's a great deal. Our food came out quickly and everything was delicious. My only complaint is that my $7 crabcake was tiny, but it was almost entirely crabmeat, so I get it. Service was incredibly friendly. It is highly evident that they value their customers. read more
