What a cool dinning experience as advertised. About 30 folks were seated around the cooking area or at hightop tables behind the cooking area. We were very pleased to have been seated at the bar, I do not think it would have been as an immersive an experience if we had we been at a table where you could not see the chef as he prepared our 4 course meal. Upon arrival you are seated and given a cocktail menu (not included in the cost of the meal). My hubby had a very strong bourbon and water and I had a cream, liquor, vodka drink that was very tasty, similar to a White Russian. At around 6 pm chef Todd began by telling us his history and passion for cooking inspired by his grandmothers as he prepared our appetizers. I am a bit fuzzy on the details of the ingredients of all the dishes since I fell later that evening, broke my hip and shoulder and spent the next 6 days in the hospital but I'll do my best, keeping in mind all 4 courses were expectional. Appetizer was a baked pear with goat cheese and a crostini with cranberry goat cheese, walnuts and honey drizzle. Second course was a bean soup and corn bread. Main course was pot roast, carrots, potatoes and mushrooms. Mine was super tender and very flavorful. Mu husbands portion had a lot of fat but what he could eat was tasty. And for dessert he served bananas foster bread pudding. We were given a sample of the bread pudding upon arrival to whet our appetites and it sure did. The whole experience was first class; food, service, cocktails, interaction with the chef, owner and wait staff, atmosphere was just plain fun, entertaining and satisfying. We were there about 2 hours. Street parking, comfortable setting and a unique dinning experience. I highly recommend for a special occasion. My friend & I had the best night out at MESA enjoying the delicious food from Chef Joe Burner. If you haven't been to MESA you have to make reservations and go. I promise you it's a fantastic night out. It's a live dining show that is unlike anything I've ever experienced. Chef Joe Burner was so charismatic and his food was not only spectacular, but made with Love. Their classes fill up fast so make sure you sign up ASAP. We will most definitely come back. Last night we attended our first ever Mesa event & we absolutely loved it! We bought tickets for a 4-course "Cooking with Indian Spices" Dinner with Chef Barde a couple months in advance. Parking in downtown New Albany was super easy & we were able to get a close parking spot along the street. We arrived around 5:30pm & were shown to our reserved seats. We looked over the drink menu & ordered some drinks. (Drinks are for an additional purchase, they are not included in the food ticket purchased online). My boyfriend ordered the Raspberry Beret & it was delicious. I ordered a glass of the Sauv Blanc & appreciated the generous pour. Chef Barde was walking around talking with guests. We enjoyed our time talking with her about Indian restaurants & the best Indian spots in the area. A few minutes after 6:00pm we started our flavorful journey into our 4 course meal. Everything we ate had such incredible smells & such incredible layers of flavor. Portion sizes were perfect & we were even asked if we'd like extra of most courses. Chef Barde even had a small table set up with some of her cookbooks, spices, rice kits and spice kits for purchase. We bought a rice kit and a spice kit before leaving. I had wanted to come and see what this place was all about way before COVID, and I finally had the chance. It was an intimate, 4-course "Seoul Food" Traditional Korean Dinner hosted by Chef Jenny of OhChae Korean Fusion. My husband and I had an amazing time and experience when we dined at MESA last night! The meal was a celebration of Mexico for Mexican Independence Day prepared by Chef Joe Burner, current executive chef of Coal's Pizza. You could feel the love put into the meal as it was prepared. I loved hearing Che Joe's stories of how he was inspired by various people, especially ones when he was remembering his grandma making the dish when he was growing up. When we arrived we were promptly welcomed and seated. This was our first time dining at MESA and the owner took his time to explain several of their cocktails with us. Throughout the night we tried several cocktails and all of them were very good. Between us we had the Old Fashion, Pineapple Margarita, In Passion, and Carajillo. The later is a coffee cocktail that the owner was gracious and let us try and my husband and I agreed that we will both be getting one when we go back! As far as the meal was concerned - all of the food was delicious and it was fun being able to listen to what inspired him to choose each dish and then watch it be prepared. Over the course of the night we had Pozole Rojo, Lump Crab and Avacado Salad, Duck Enchiladas with a green chili potato relleno, and Arroz Con Leche. The owner and staff were all very friendly, polite, and did an amazing job. We felt very welcomed and you could tell everyone just wanted you to enjoy your time and experience. I would highly recommend this place. They have a variety of chefs come in and prepare different cuisines so it seems like the possibilities are endless at this establishment. A mixed opinion. Was given tickets for my birthday. $176 for two. We spent $109 with tip on cocktails which were really good at $15 each. It was a Beetlejuice themed dinner with a trivia contest. The first course. Shrimp cocktail was very good. 4 large shrimp and spicy garlic sauce. The 2nd course was black and white spaghetti. Red cabbage puree and goat cheese. As they prepare everything in front of you we were able to ask for a bit more goat cheese as what the girl originally put on was non existent. It was good but my 4 year old grand son would still have been hungry. The 3rd course was filling and plentiful. Kind of trifle vibe. So my husband and I watched Beetlejuice twice and took numerous quizzes online. I was very disappointed to learn that the trivia would take the form of raising hands not a written quiz. I knew the answer to every single question. It ended up between us and another couple. I wear hearing aids and we were sat in the furthest seat to the person asking the questions. I misheard the question so did not raise my hand. The other couple answered correctly. Would not go again as $176 is way too expensive for the amount if food we got. Interesting idea, but too expensive. My husband wants to stop at whitecastle! UPDATE:::: I have seen a lot of other reviews with lots of pictures and I think we just chose the wrong night. Honestly, everything about this place deserved a 5-star review except for the portion sizes. I'm a medium sized woman with a pretty average appetite and I was able to finish every bite without being uncomfortable at all. My husband had to stop at Wendy's on the way home, he didn't feel at all satisfied. At $75 per plate, I was disappointed that the portions were quite small, most especially the salad. I was so hungry that I gulped it down without even pausing for a pic! I did better on the entree and dessert. We watched Chef Liz Martinez cook up an arugula salad, Chicken Marsala and a delicious chocolate mousse dessert. It's a great concept with a small grouping of people seated around a very nice kitchen set up. The food all tasted fresh and flavorful. Absolutely no complaint there, the meal itself was perfection. The cocktails ran about $10/each. I had the MESA margarita and it was delicious. The owner was present and walked around engaging people. You can tell he is very passionate about what he does and I hope MESA continues to be successful! We came here for a couple's paint on valentines day. Normally I don't like to go out on Valentine's Day but this was going to be catered and I knew that they would have enough food for us and service to take care of it so we had a nice meal that was catered, and then we painted in between the two of us. We experienced Mesa, for the first time last night. New Albany has been booming, and it is taking me a while to try all their great, new spots, since we live across the river. I am glad that my wait is over, for Mesa. I am not sure how else you get in, but I reserved/ordered/paid, on their website. It is a very good website, btw. I suggest you check their calendar. They seem to fill up fast. They only have space, for ~24. I was excited, when I saw there were openings, for a Tamale making experience, with Chef Paco, of Con Huevos, one of our favorite Louisville breakfast places. This event did not include alcoholic beverages, in the price, but it did say there was a cocktail hour, before the dinner started. The restaurant suggests you get there, at least 15 minutes before the start time. A cocktail hour before (cash bar) is great motivation, to get people there early. Whether you enjoy a cocktail or not, you will want to browse their retail area. They offer many wonderful local items, from KY & IN. Cellar Chocolates and Fond are among many other local product options. There are also many unique and useful kitchen and cooking items. You could really buy some great gifts here, for others and yourself. I mentioned that there is only space, for 24. All of the seating is at a bar around the kitchen area. It is sparkling clean and beautiful. For our meal, it was hands on and instructional, but even for those that are not, you watch the chef prepare your meal. Everyone was welcomed, by the General Manager Rod Juarez, as if we were entering his home. It is a very comfortable feeling and the people are very pleasant. There was even a photographer taking pictures. I hope to receive the link, soon. They also do private events. I have already suggested that my Wine Club look into having a meal, with wine tastings here. Maybe that will happen, but either way, I will be checking their calendar again, soon! What a wonderful $$$$ experience. If you can do this, I recommend it. We were greeted with the door being opened & a pleasant welcome. We were asked our names & shown to our reserved seats. There is a cocktail hour before the show begins. There are servers who take care of drink requests & later they clear dishes very efficiently. There is a small shop on the other side of the kitchen theatre. They sell useful, cute, & quirky cooking items. We had the pleasure of watching, listening to, & eating the food cooked by Chef Mark Ford of Anoosh Bistro with the assistance of Chef Jody of Farm to Fork Catering. Mark shared his interest in cooking, education, & experience. We were served a four course meal. Each item was prepared for us in the restaurant, except the fettuccine, which was reheated. I am not going to mention all the foods that were prepared. I will just say EVERYTHING WAS FANTASTIC! It was very interesting watching Chef cook & hearing him talk about what he was doing. He & Chef Jody freely answered questions. I recommend this experience. One little problem, the seats are too close together. We were shoulder to shoulder. It was uncomfortable sitting so close to others. My husband was seated next to a left-handed person. Not a good situation for either of them. If you are making reservations, you might want to ask for an end seat, if you are left-handed. TIP-If you want to meet up with friends to hang out, catch up, & talk loudly while the Chef is talking THIS IS NOT THE PLACE. Don't spoil someone else's cooking & learning experience. Had a great time here! We took a pasta making class with Chef Allan who is the chef at Butchertown Pizza. We got to try our hand at making pasta from scratch which was fun while the chef was teaching us and actually preparing our meal for the evening. They have a serve who goes around and takes drink orders. There's a professional photographer at each event taking pictures and will send a link to all the pictures. One of my favorite places to go! I have been here at least 5 times since they've opened and every time is as good if not better than the one before. My last trip was for a Christmas movie trivia night with a group of friends. You are always greeted at the door with a warm smile. Seating is in a wide "U" around the chef/kitchen. They aren't open every night, but have at least 15 a month. Like them on fb to find out as soon as they are posted. You can get there an hour earlier to order a drink and kick back and relax. The food is always delicious. We weren't expecting much for trivia night, but we had a great starter, with cranberries and cheese, followed by a huge chicken breast and then desert! Combine that with holiday trivia and you can't ask for more. The most unique experience here was dining in the dark, where we ate all three courses with blindfolds on. Events range form $45 - $75. What an amazing culinary experience! The menu is fixed each night, however it's always different because each night they bring in a new chef from the area! The night we went they had Chef Paco Garcia make a wonderful 4 course seafood meal. OMG the ceviche was spot on, the salmon tacos rocked, the shrimp & rice was fabulous, and the banana bread pudding finished off the night perfectly! We tried several cocktails, and each one was very good! I was very glad we bought our tickets well in advance, because they sell out most nights. We went to Mesa for a private work event. It is such a cool concept and the the owner was awesome! I really enjoyed talking to him about how he started the business and loved his stories that opened and closed the event. The service and attention to detail was on point. I really enjoyed the setup of the space and how we got to interact with the chef while he was preparing our food. It was a 4 course meal, but there wasn't a long wait between dishes in spite of them having to finish cooking and plating over 20 plates for our group. The evening flowed nicely. Awesome date night spot. Cool concept as a limited number of diners gathers around a working kitchen where the chef presents what they are cooking while finishing up the dishes and serving them. We got to learn great little tidbits for cooking such as using a thick southern mayonnaise for deviled eggs or what a bronzer is for game hens. MESA is such a cool concept. You not only get to eat delicious food, but watch it prepared and talk with the chef about the methodology and history behind each dish. I went for a Yelp elite event with The Fat Lamb's chef Dallas McGarity. He and his wife were an absolute joy, and it was clear that they take a lot of pride and care in making sure each dish is exactly right. They explained how each dish (Brussel sprouts, gnocchi, chocolate mousse) was prepared, joked and answered our questions. The experience and food were so good, I made a point to go to their restaurant later -- which, perhaps, is part of the brilliance of MESA. It's a cool experience for diners, but it's also an opportunity for chefs to showcase their food and draw new customers. Each "show" is a new local chef, and MESA does dinners, breakfasts and some lighter treats, like chocolates or drinks. The space itself is part kitchen, part store. Half of the room is filled with cookbooks, aprons, utensils and other stuff for purchase. The other half is a long kitchen bounded by countertop seating for diners. The concept of Mesa is absolutely genius. The owner and service staff are incredibly polite. This place allows you to get up close and personal with the finest chefs of the area. You are free and encouraged to ask questions. The stories you hear will be amazing. The menu is ever changing due to never having the same chef which will keep this place from ever going stale. While you will never be able to have the meal that we ate while visiting, I can tell you it was absolutely phenomenal. Everything is made fresh right before your eyes and noses. You, also, get a single free cocktail which is a nice touch. While it may seem expensive for a meal- you are, also, paying for a hell of a show. Mesa has been on my must visit list for awhile. Finally found a menu that peaked our interest and a convenient day, as we would have to drive down from Indy, so I booked tickets! Tonight was the night, had a nice drive down and was excited for the event. Well, I am greatly disappointed. While the food was delish, the chefs barely spoke to us. If someone asked a question they answered and they told us what they were serving but I was expecting interaction while cooking. I wanted to know what ingredients they were adding etc. instead it was a huge bore. So basically this place is dependent on the chefs and what your expectations are. read more

A Fantastic Experience! We were so impressed by our evening at MESA. It began with the owner, dressed in a suit, personally greeting us, and all other guests as we entered the premises. Drink orders were taken by an attentive and talented staff (excellent Old Fashioned!) and we looked around the associated store, which had lots of interesting items connected with cooking. The dinner presentation, with Chef Josh Moore of Volare, was both fun and delicious. The food was amazing. The seating consists of a long wrap around bar/table type seating adjacent to the cooking area, and while we were at one end, Chef Moore, spread his cooking demonstration amongst three areas, affording everyone a close up view at one point. MESA offers a variety of options for your entertainment in addition to guest Chefs from well-known local restaurants, such as Tapas and Trivia, Lunch, Dinner, Mixology classes and many more, at various price points. The Hubs and I had such a nice evening at Mesa for the Cellar Door Chocolate and Bourbon tasting. We felt like we were being welcomed to a friends kitchen. The hosts for the evening were Erika, owner of Cellar Door Chocolate and Alan (?) of Evan Williams. We really enjoyed the rapport and fun information from these 2 masters of their individual crafts. The chocolates were extraordinary and paired very well with the selected bourbons. We were offered cocktails, I wish I could remember the names but they were delicious. I'm definitely going to bring a notebook next time. So now that we've gotten our feet wet at Mesa A Collaborative Kitchen, we will return for other visiting chefs.
