This was my first, and last, visit to Westside Dermatology. I had taken my daughter to be seen here…read moreabout 10 years ago and had a good experience. My experience was not. Dr Ramsey Markus was dismissive, brusque, condescending and rushed. I had provided a list of my concerns at the time I booked my appointment, and was prepared to ask all my skin questions and concerns during the visit. Dr Markus dismissed several things I asked him about during exam, including something another doc had told me about a dermatofibroma. His general tone was condescending as if I, without a MD after my name, wouldn't know anything about skin conditions. During my skin check, Dr Markus identified a potential skin cancer and reluctantly performed a biopsy at the time of my visit, per my request - stating his schedule was busy. I understood this, as I booked my appointment in January for first available at the end of April. "Pertinent negatives" section of my visit notes inaccurately stated I had no previous history of skin cancer. I had disclosed when booking my appointment that I had a history of squamous cell skin cancer in 2014. Dr Markus did not specifically offer treatment options for skin tags or milia, as stated in his visit notes. When I asked him about the milia around my eyes, he told me, "some people make milia." Across the board, the visit notes in my file did not reflect what he actually counseled me on, indicating he used canned notes but did not actually verbalize them to me. When I asked about options to treat readiness on the face, Dr Markus gave me a flyer with cosmetic laser treatment options, upon which he circled the options he recommended. He told me there was a shampoo I could use to treat Tinea at home, but didn't provide the name of the product - I had to ask the front desk to get it from the medical assistant as I was checking out. I picked up a brochure on Tinea and Mohs from the treatment room; Dr Markus did not offer them. Appears this dermatologist is quick to offer treatment options that bring in money (cosmetic), but not as quick to share home treatment options or minor procedures (skin tag removal, milia extraction). Biopsy results I viewed in the patient portal were dated 4/29 (4/24 visit). Dr called me on 5/5 (4 business days later) with a positive result of basal cell cancer. He referred me to a Mohs surgery center for treatment. Dr Markus coached me on screening calls when I picked up on his second call. I will not be returning for any elective cosmetic procedures or further skin checks.

Imagine having an extremely serious medical condition that your primary care practitioner failed to…read morerecognize, did not take seriously and took no effective action to address. If your primary care practitioner happens to be Elissa Mullen, ND, this scenario is a distinct possibility, or at least it was for me when she mis-diagnosed a cancerous tumor the size of a plumb in the back of my throat for a case of tonsilitis. Out of concern regarding the symptoms I had been experiencing all summer, I scheduled an appointment in September with Dr. Mullen, my primary care practitioner. After describing the symptoms to her, she initially attributed them to my orthodontic aligners. However, after visually examining the back of my throat she said my left tonsil was the largest she had ever seen and proscribed antibiotics for what she told me was likely a case of tonsilitis. After completing two rounds of antibiotics, I retuned a couple of weeks later and again, she prescribed antibiotics. At neither visit did she take a swab to test her theory nor suggest that I see a specialist. Finally realizing that I needed real medical care, I found Dr. Grace Wandell, a throat specialist at Swedish Hospital on my own. But because I had to self-refer, I had to wait weeks for the appointment instead of days had my primary care practitioner made the referral. As soon as I opened my mouth, Dr. Wandell recognized my tumor for what it was, taking biopsies to confirm what her trained and experienced eyes told her instantly. As I see it, the purpose of a primary care practitioner is to serve as your medical sentinel to flag potential health risks--If she can't even do that, then what meaningful protection do you have?

I provided my recent blood work, but she dismissed it because it didn't include the reference ranges and suggested I redo the exact same tests. At my follow-up appointment (which wasn't necessary since she couldn't identify the issue or offer a solution), there was still no clear plan of action. Instead, she provided completely unrelated insights, which I quickly dismissed since I had a PCP appointment scheduled and decided to move on. Two months later, I received a bill for both visits because my insurance had rejected the claims. Now I'm stuck paying out of pocket for two appointments that were completely useless.

Unfortunately did not have a good experience and wanted to give it some time before leaving a…read morereview to gather feedback from others. I also wanted to compare my experience and results with somewhere else just in case Botox just wasn't a good fit for me so that I didn't wrongly blame my experience here. I went in for 40 units of Botox. I am 30, have a 'baby face', don't have any wrinkles, I wanted to start Botox for preventable measures because my face is pretty expressive. I just wanted my forehead, 11's, and crows feet done. Everywhere that I have read says that 40 units would be more than enough for this. I ended up getting upsold to get an extra 20 units, for a total of 60 for these areas. This sounded like a lot to me, but the injector (wasn't the owner, I don't remember her name) refused to do all three areas if I didn't get 60 units and would only do 2 of the areas I wanted. The reason she gave was because my muscles were 'too strong' so I needed more, even though I told her this was my first time and there was no way for her to know how my muscles would respond to Botox or how much I would need. Every place and things I have read recommend not going heavy the first time. I was pressured and flustered and I gave in because I had my heart set on getting those three areas done before a big trip and I had already paid for the 40 units. The Botox settled after about 2 weeks and god it was horrible. Those areas were so heavy and my face was so puffy probably from lack of lymphatic drainage (which I knew was a possibility) . But even manual lymphatic massages and movement and so many other things I tried didn't help. I have talked about my experience online (without naming the place), and consulted some other injectors. Everyone that I got feedback from were absolutely shocked that someone would suggest and use 60 units to treat those areas, especially on someone getting Botox for the first time. I knew it sounded like a lot but I didn't realize how crazy it apparently was. It seems like the push for 60 units came from a 20:20:20 ratio strategy that is very outdated, not individualized, and is no longer suggested because it is too much. I also bled a lot during the injections and the injector seemed annoyed and mad at me about it and insinuating that I didn't follow pre injection procedures. I did not have any caffeine, ibuprofen, or anything that would cause excessive bleeding, I have gotten tattoos and microneedling and have never had an issue with being someone that bleeds a lot. My face was also very red afterwards, which also isn't super normal for me. The markings for the injection sites were also concerning. She just kind of marked some lines on my forehead and a some dots what seemed like randomly. She did not have me make any face expressions while she was marking to really personalize where they should go, it seemed like generic placements. She also spent more time explaining botulism than she did with the actual placements and injections, no real consultation, no explanation of placements, no questions for me. On top of that, the Botox had completely worn off after about a month. Which I guess I'm glad it did, but still a crazy short time for how much Botox was injected. I have had people suggest that the Botox was diluted with something. I don't know if that was the case but I feel like it would explain a lot. I have gotten some more Botox somewhere else since my appointment here and have not had any issues. It's a stark difference to my experience here. For 40 units I did all the places an originally wanted and had some extra to hit other places. No bleeding, my skin didn't turn bright red, and no heaviness or puffiness. Only giving an extra star because the receptionist was friendly and check in was easy.
